Abstract

499,429. Venturi and Pitot tubes for aircraft. WALLIS, H. C. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34430. [Class 69 (i)] To prevent the entry of dust, water, and other foreign matter into a Venturi or Pitot tube 10 used on an aircraft, a movable closure 18 is provided for the air-reception end which tends to move to closing position and is controlled in accordance with the air-speed so that when this is above a predetermined limit it moves to the open position. In the construction shown, the closure 18 is formed at one end of a lever pivoted to a clamp 11 secured to the tube 10, the other end 16 of the lever being formed as an aerofoil which, on the predetermined speed being attained, causes the lever to rock and lower the closure 18 from the mouth of the tube. The closure is returned to closing position by the weight of the aerofoil, or a spring 19, or both.
