Description
SPECIFICATION
Hair dressers' accessory
This invention relates to neck rests and in particular to neck rests for use in hair dressing salons.
In hair dressing saloons, especially womens' hair dressing saloons, a person whose- hair is being treated normally has to have her hair washed prior to cutting and/or styling. When the hair is being washed or rinsed the person normally lies back with her neck resting against the rim of the basin or sink in which the hair is washed. In many hair dressing saloons, there is provided a cut-out in the front portion of the basin to receive the lower portion of the neck. A towel is normally wrapped about the neck of the person being treated in an attempt to prevent water from running down her neck.
Because the basins are usually made of ceramic material, the rim is hard and cold and it can be extremely uncomfortable to lie with the neck resting on this rim especially when washing and rinsing takes some time. Furthermore, water normally soaks the towel and then runs down the neck thereby wetting the clothes of the person whose hair is being treated.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a protector unit which is capable of being applied to the rim of the basin in a hair dressing saloon, the protector unit comprising a low pad that can rest on the rim and attachment and which can be secured to the basin or to another apparatus attached to the basin to hold the protector unit in position.
The invention is attached to the basin by a number of suckers. These suckers are on the underside of flaps extending on each side of the pad and are preferably wider than the pad at at least part of their length so as to be wider than the cut-out in which the pad must be accommodated.
The pad is preferably formed separately of the means of securing it to the basin and attached thereto by a monding medium. The pad comprises foamed flexible material and is preferably formed by extrusion.
The attachment pad is preferably a moulding of a soft rubber or soft plastic material.
The protector unit is preferably coated with a waterproof coating which is suitably coloured to enhance the aesthetic appearance.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings: Figure 1 an underplan of the protector unit of the invention and
Figure 2 is a section
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a protector unit 10 of the invention.
This unit 10 comprises an attachment part 12 and a pad 14 on the upper side of the attachement part 12.
The attachment part 12 comprises of one piece moulding of Silicone or Latex material. It is generally of "figure of eight" shape sheet with a narrow rectangular waist 16 and two enlarged flaps 18 on either side thereof. The concave underside of the waist is provided with low ridges (not shown) for obvious purpose. On the underside of each of the flaps 18 there are a number of suckers 20 which when applied to a smooth surface such as the surface of a ceramic or similar wash basin will adhere thereto by vacuum. The material whereof the attachment part is made is of sufficient hardness for the suckers 20 to operate in the conventional manner. Conveniently, the attachment part 12 comprises a transparent silicone material of 40 shore hardness. The pad 14 extends across the waist 16 of the attachment part 12 and protrudes from both sides.
The pas 14 is forned as an extrusion of foamed rubber material to be somewhat softer than the attachment part 12 having for example a density of 43kg/cm3. The pad 14 is sut to length so that it is of the same length as the waist 16. The shape of the pad is such that it has a lower part 22 and an upper hemi-cylindrical part 24. A centre recess 26 having a larger radius than the hemi-cylindrical part 24 fits closely onto the convex upper surface of the waist 16 and is bonded thereto by suitable bonding medium such as
Silicone 732 Adhesive coating. The lower corners 30 of the pad 14 are rounded to the recess 26
The entire protection unit is Silicone coated with a sealand that protects it from the ingress of water. In addition to the protection that the Silicone coating affords, it can be modelled in various colours to choice.
A plastic cover 32 fits closely over the pad and is held to it by an elastic band 34 which fits below the corners 30 and the projecting end of the pad. The cover is conveniently coloured or transparent. In use the unit then is applied to the hair washing basin with the cushion or pad 14 lying on the upper edge of the cut-out in the edge of the basin and the flaps 18 lying alongside the vertical walls underneath. When this happens the ridges on the waist will improve the grip on the edge of the basin and further prevent the enture assembly from slipping.
The flaps 18 are secured respectively to the fron face of the basin and the inner surface.
The suckers 20 will ensure that there is a semi-permanent connection between the flaps 18 and the surfaces of the basin. The pad 14 will be securely held in place by this means on the rim of the basin.
The pad 14 will support the back of the neck and reduce the discomfort experienced when having this part of the neck resting on the cold hard rim of the basin. Furthermore the pad 14 will tend to mould itself to the shape of the back of the neck to form a seal against neck so that less water will bee able to run down past it, protecting the clothes of the customer.
The plastic cover 32 is replaced after use in the interests of hygiene. Further, it protects the pad against staining by any chemicals applied to the hair.
This invention is not limited to the precise details set out herein and illustrated in the drawings. For example the pad and protection unit can be forined as a one piece unit if desired.
