Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe socket assembly This invention relates to a pipe socket assembly for forming a tensile resistant pipe connection with a spigot.
The invention is particularly, but not exclusively, applicable in polyethylene pipe systems used for potable water distribution where the usual fusion weld is either not possible or undesirable.
The invention includes a pipe socket assembly for forming a tensile resistant pipe connection with a spigot, which socket assembly comprises a socket having a gripper ring disposed in a first radially inwardly opening annular groove for gripping engagement with the external surface of the spigot and a sealing ring located in a second radially inwardly opening annular groove axially spaced from said first groove, said sealing ring being formed with two circumferential lip portions having a substantially V-shaped cross-section when undeformed, one lip portion being retained in said second groove by a retaining ring disposed in engagement therewith and between said lip portions and the other lip portion being arranged to sealingly engage the external surface of the spigot.
In an assembly as defined above advantageously the lengths of the lip portions of said sealing ring are such that both lip portions extend axially inwardly of said retaining ring in the socket, and the dimensions of said lip portions are such that there is more volume of lip material axially inwardly of said retaining ring than there is room for in the space confined by the adjacent part of the bottom of the second groove, the external surface of the spigot to be inserted into the socket, the axially inner sidewall of the second groove and the retaining ring, so that when the spigot is inserted in the socket the lip material is in a state of compression and deformation and substantially fills up said space.
The invention also includes a pipe socket assembly for forming a tensile resistant pipe connection with a spigot, which socket assembly comprises a socket formed of cast metal and having a gripper ring disposed in a first radially inwardly opening annular groove for gripping engagement with the external surface of the spigot and a sealing ring located in a second radially inwardly opening annular groove axially spaced from said first groove.
Advantageously the socket is formed of a cast aluminium alloy and is preferably coated with a nylon material.
In the embodiment of the invention described hereinafter the gripper ring is split axially and furthermore the first groove of the socket has a frusto-conical surface which is cooperable with a frusto-conical external surface of the gripper ring to allow radial expansion of the gripper ring on axial movement thereof in said first groove away from the outer end of the socket.
In the embodiment the first groove of the socket is axially inwardly of the second groove thereof.
The socket assembly may be provided on the end of a pipe length but it is envisaged that more commonly it would be provided on one end of a pipe fitting, for example a T-joint, a bend or a coupler.
The invention also includes a tensile resistant pipe connection comprising a socket assembly as defined above and a spigot inserted therein, the gripper ring being in gripping engagement with the external surface of the spigot and the sealing ring sealingly engaging the external surface of the spigot.
If the spigot is formed of a plastics material, for example when the spigot is an end portion of a polyethylene pipe, it is preferably provided internally with a reinforcing bush to reinforce the spigot against compression by said gripper ring.
In order that the invention may be well understood, the embodiment thereof referred to above, will now be described by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a semi-axial cross-section of a socket assembly and spigot.
The illustrated socket assembly 1 is intended for use in a potable water distribution system for connection to a spigot end 2 of a polyethylene pipe in a tensile resistant manner.
The socket assembly 1 is provided on one end of a cast metal coupler 3, the other end of which is provided with a flange 4 by which the coupler 3 can be connected in a tensile and torque resistant manner to the flange of a further metal component of the distribution system, such as a cast metal Junction, a bend, or a valve. Alternatively the socket assembly may be provided on the end of such a component.
The coupler 3 is cast in high strength aluminium alloy and is thus tensile and torque resistant and also resistant to impacts which it may be subjected to in use if it is left exposed for access.
Whilst the aluminium alloy would be corrosion resistant to a certain degree it is preferred to coat the aluminium coupler with a plastics coating and in the embodiment the coating is a nylon for example Rilsan. If the coupler were cast in another metal, a plastics coating is also envisaged to prevent corrosion.
The use of a high strength aluminium alloy however is preferred since not only does the resulting coupler have the required mechanical properties but also it is light in weight. Furthermore, aluminium alloy is particularly adapted to be readily cast.
The socket assembly 1 comprises a socket 5 having a gripper ring 6 disposed in a first radially inwardly opening annular groove 7 for gripping engagement with the external surface of the spigot 2 and a sealing ring 8 located in a second radially inwardly opening groove 9 axially spaced from the groove 7. In the illustrated socket assembly, the groove 7 is axially inwardly of the groove 9.
The sealing ring 8 is preferably formed of rubber and, in the embodiment shown, is formed with two circumferential lip portions 10 and 11 having a substantially V-shaped cross-section when undeformed, as illustrated.
The radially outer lip portion 10 is retained in the groove 9 by a retaining ring 12 disposed in engagement with the lip portion 10 in a groove defined thereby and is located between that lip portion and the lip portion 11.
The retaining ring 12 is adapted to press the lip portion 10 against the bottom of the groove 9 to prevent it being forced out of the groove 9 when the spigot is inserted into the socket assembly and engages and deforms the radially inner lip portion 11 which is arranged to sealingly engage the external surface of the spigot.
The lengths of the lip portions 10, 11 of the sealing ring 8 are such that both lip portions extend axially inwardly of said retaining ring 12 in the socket, and the dimensions of said lip portions are such that there is more volume of lip material axially inwardly of said retaining ring than there is room for in the space confined by the adjacent part of the bottom of the groove 9, the external surface of the spigot 2 to be inserted into the socket, the axially inner sidewall of the groove 9 and the retaining ring 12, so that when the spigot is inserted in the socket the lip material is in a state of compression and deformation and substantially fills up said space.
Further examples of possible arrangements of a sealing ring retained in a groove by a retaining ring are given in GB-A-2016630 to which reference is directed.
The gripper ring 6 is preferably formed of metal, for example stainless steel, and comprises a plurality of circumferentially extending axially spaced teeth 13 which are inclined axially inwardly in the socket assembly and arranged to dig into and thereby grip the external surface of the spigot 2 when the latter is inserted in the socket assembly. The gripper ring 6 is axially split to enable it to contract and expand radially, and the groove 7 has a frusto-conical base surface which is cooperable with a frusto-conical external surf#ace 14 of the gripper ring 6 to allow radial expansion of the ring 6 on axial movement thereof in the groove 7 away from the outer end of the socket. It will be appreciated that when the spigot is inserted into the socket assembly, the gripper ring will ride over the chamfered end 15 thereof onto the external surface of the spigot.A radial face 16 of the groove 7 limits the axial movement of the ring inwardly as it moves along the groove 7 with its teeth engaged in the external surface of the spigot.
Thereafter relative axial movement of the spigot and socket assembly due to tensile loads thereon is resisted by engagement of the cooperable frusto-conical surfaces of the groove 7 and gripper ring 6.
As will be appreciated from the foregoing the polyethylene spigot will be subjected to radial compressive loads by the gripper ring 6 and also to a lesser extent by the sealing ring 8. In order to reinforce the spigot against such compressive loads the spigot is provided internally with a reinforcing bush 17. The bush 17 is provided with a radial end flange 18 to limit its insertion into the spigot and is split obliquely along its length to allow its outer surface to confirm with the inner surface of the spigot, the diameter of which may vary due to manufacturing tolerances.
