Abstract

A floor standing gas or electric cooker 1 is adapted to be slid-under a continuous worktop 2 between adjacent base units, the cooker 1 being provided with a fume vent outlet 14 for co-operating with a venting grille 10 provided in the worktop 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cookers This invention relates to cookers and is especially applicable to gas cookers.
At the present time with the popularity of so-called built-in, modularized kitchens, it is known to provide cookers of predefined width to slide between kitchen cabinets and also "eye-ievel" oven units which slide into "tall" kitchen cabinets.
According to the present invention there is provided a floor-standing cooker which is adapted to be slid-under a continuous worktop supported by one or more adjacent kitchen cabinets, said cooker having venting means, preferably in the top thereof, for co-operation with a venting slot in said worktop.
In carrying out the invention it may be arranged that the venting means is arranged such that hot vent gases from said cooker are emitted via said venting slot adjacent to one or more layers of cooling air derived, for example, from the rear of and/or along the top of said cooker.
In another arrangement according to the invention a venting grille will be provided for location in the venting slot of said worktop, and preferably the venting grille will be adaptable, such as by being reversible, whereby said cooker may be accommodated at different relative depths under said worktop. In such an arrangement the venting grille may be arranged to locate with the venting means of said cooker to prevent said cooker from being slid-out from under said worktop.
It may also be arranged that the venting grille comprises two parts, a first part consisting of an inner metallic grille section having venting holes therein, and a second part consisting of a surrounding support of plastics material in which the grille section is mounted.
The surrounding support plastics material has the effect of providing a heat insulator between the metallic grille section and the worktop.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, is a perspective view of a cooker in accordance with the present invention as used with a separate overhead hob unit; Figure 2, is a cross-sectional view of the cooker as shown in Fig. 1 but excluding the overhead hob unit; and Figure 3, is a perspective view of a venting grille suitable for use with cookers of Fig. 1 or Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a floor-standing slide-under gas cooker 1 which is designed to be slid-under a continuous worktop 2 between two base units 3 and 4 on which the worktop is supported. The cooker 1 may conveniently consist on an oven unit 5, grill unit 6 and control panel 7, and may be supported in conventional manner on two rearward mounted castors and two front mounted, height adjustable feet (not shown).
A separate hob-unit 8 may be provided either directly above the cooker 1 as shown in Fig. 1, or elsewhere in the kitchen, and the hob-unit 8 may optionally be provided with a lid 9.
In order to adequately vent the hot gases from the cooker 1, the worktop 2 is provided with a venting grille 10, shown in greater detail in Figs. 2 and 3, the venting grille 10 being positioned to the rear of the hob-unit 8 shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings there is shown a cross-sectional view of the cooker depicted in Fig. 1, but in which for convenience the hob unit 8 has been omitted. In Fig. 2, the cooker 1 is shown in position under the worktop 2, which extends from a wall 11, the cooker being supported on a floor 12 with a spacing 13 between the rear of the cooker 1 and the wall 11.
The cooker 1 is provided in its top surface with a vent outlet 14 through which hot vent gases from the cooker 1 are emitted, the vent outlet 14 being adapted to co-operate with the venting grille 10, which is shown in greater detail in Fig. 3, and which is located in the worktop 2.
The venting grille 10 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 consists of an aluminium extruded grille section 1 5 which is supported in an outer plastics section 16 which is screwed to the worktop 2, (Fig. 2). The grille section 15 is provided with two offset, downwardly depending flanges 1 7 which co-operate with the vent outlet 14 of the cooker 1, the offsetting of the flanges 17 enabling the grille section 15 to be reversed in the plastics section 16 as depicted diagrammatically at A and B in Fig.
2, enabling the cooker 1 to be accommodated at different relative depths under the worktop 2. In addition, the downwardly depending flanges of the grille section 15 may be arranged to co-operate with the vent outlet 14 of the cooker 1 (as shown) to prevent the cooker 1 from being slid-out from under the worktop, without first removing the grille section 15.
In order that the gas cooker shown in Figs.
1 and 2 may be slid in and out under the worktop 2, it may be provided with with a flexible gas inlet pipe (not shown) which is coupled to a fixed gas outlet (not shown) located behind the cooker 1.
Because the gases vented from the cooker 1 via the venting grille 10 can be of extremely high temperature it is arranged that the gases vented from the oven/grill sections of the cooker are sandwiched between layers of relatively cool air derived from across the top of the cooker 1 as indicated at 18 in Fig. 2, and from the rear of the cooker 1 as indicated at 19 (Fig. 2). In addition, the fact that the grille section 15 of the venting grille 10 is mounted in the outer plastics section 16, means that the worktop 2 is somewhat heat insulated from the actual vent temperatures.
Although the cooker depicted in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 is depicted as a gas cooker having separate oven and grill units, it will be appreciated that the invention may be applicable to electric as well as gas cookers and is also applicable to cookers having any oven/double oven/grill combination.
