Abstract
Two apertured metal walls (4, 5) are coupled together in spaced apart relation by a coupling including e.g. a metal bolt (6) and a nut (7). The coupling, in one embodiment, also includes two ferrules (8) each comprising a sleeve portion (11) and a flange portion (12), and two washers (9) all made of a tough material which affords insulation against transfer of heat, electricity and vibration. In addition the coupling includes two metal washers (10). The object of the invention is to avoid metal-to-metal connection from one wall (4) to the other (5). Thus the flange portions (12) arranged face-to-face between the walls (4, 5) avoid direct contact between the walls (4, 5) and the sleeve portions (11) and the washers (9) avoid contact between each wall (4, 5) and the nut (7) and bolt (6). Other arrangements of flange portions and sleeve portions are disclosed. (Figs. 4-6). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Coupling and coupled assembly
This invention relates to a coupling and a coupled assembly which afford insulation against transfer of heat, electricity and vibration.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a coupling comprising a metal fastening including a shank, and sleeve means, spacer means, and two washers made of a tough material which affords insulation against transfer of heat, electricity and vibration, the sleeve means being intended to surround the shank and extend through apertures in two metal walls, the spacer means being intended to space apart the metal walls with each metal wall disposed between the spacer means and one of the washers, and the walls, the spacer means and the washers being intended to be clamped by two shoulders presented by the fastening at opposite ends of the shank by means of tension in the shank.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a coupled assembly comprising a first metal member presenting a first wall, a second metal member presenting a second wall spaced from the first wall, and the above coupling.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a typical cold rolled, pressed or folded "Z" shaped section of metal;
Fig. 2 shows two metal angle sections coupled together by means of a metal coupling to form a "Z" shaped assembly;
Fig. 3 shows two metal angle sections coupled together by means of a coupling including a metal fastening and other non-metallic parts according to the invention; and
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 illustrate modifications of the coupling shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 1 shows a typical "Z" shaped section 1 of metal used commonly as a spacer section installed between two skins of metal, plastics, gypsum, concrete, glass and cement to prevent compression of glass or mineral insulation wool between the skins. Since there is a direct metal connection between the skins through the section there occurs heat loss through the assembly.
Fig. 2 shows two metal angle sections 2 and 3 presenting two walls 4 and 5 with aligned apertures receiving a shank of a metal fastening in the form of a bolt 6 and a nut 7 to form a "Z" shaped assembly. Since the walls 4 and 5 are clamped together the assembly has the same disadvantage as the one-piece section in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows again two metal angle sections 2 and 3 presenting two walls 4 and 5 with aligned apertures. Again a bolt 6 and a nut 7 are used as a metal fastening. However additionally there are shown two ferrules 8 and two washers 9 all made of nylon. Two metal washers 10 are also provided. Each ferrule 8 comprises a sleeve portion 11 and a flange portion 12 at one end.
The ferrules 8 surround the shank of the bolt 6 with the flange portions 12 in face-toface contact with each other and the washers 9 and 10 surround the sleeve portions 11.
The walls 4 and 5 receive through their apertures the respective sleeve portions 11 and are spaced apart by the two flange portions
12. Each wall 4, 5 is disposed between one of the flange portions 12 and one of the washers 9 with each washer 10 between one of the washers 9 and either the head or the bolt 6 or the nut 7.
It will be seen that by means of this assembly there is no metal-to-metal connection between the angle sections 2 and 3 and thus heat loss through the assembly is minimised.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 there is a single ferrule having two sleeve portions 13 and an intermediate flange portion 14.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 a ferrule 15 surrounds asingle sleeve 16 and spaces apart the walls 4, 5.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the ferrule 15 of Fig. 5 is used with two further ferrules 17 each comprising a sleeve portion 18 and a flange portion 19. The ferrule 15 surrounds both sleeve portions 18 and flange portions 19 replace the washers 9 in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
Instead of the two angle sections 2 and 3 the assembly may comprise any combination of two sections selected from angle, "Z" shaped, channel and closed sections such as circular, rectangular and triangular according to the desired application. In addition to affording insulation against transfer of heat the assembly also affords insulation against transfer of electricity and vibration and thus provides isolation of equipment rooms against lightening, electrostatic discharges and electrical faults and reduction of noise transfer through the spacing apart of the walls of the two sections there is a facility for venting between cavities on either side of the assembly.
1. A coupling comprising a metal fastening including a shank, and sleeve means, spacer means, and two washers made of a tough material which affords insulation against transfer of heat, electricity and vibration, the sleeve means being intended to surround the shank and extend through apertures in two metal walls, the spacer means being intended to space apart the metal walls with each metal wall disposed between the spacer means and one of the washers, and the walls, the spacer means and the washers being intended to be clamped by two shoulders presented by the fastening at opposite ends of the shank by
