Abstract

217,635. Woosnam, A., (National Indicator Co.). March 14, 1923. Braiding-machines. - In a machine with two series of bobbins revolving in opposite directions about a common axis, the inner bobbins are slidably supported at the inner ends only, on a circular gapped track 14<a>, their outer ends having lenticular switching plates 50. The outer bobbin threads are deflected by these plates and by cams 29 made of bent wire. and removably mounted in a series of sockets provided in a stationary part of the machine. A sleeve 8 carrying a turret 9 and a second sleeve 13 carrying an outer turret 14 are mounted to rotate in opposite directions on a central tubular post 6. The lower end of the turreet 14 is hollow, forming an oil chamber 21 and carries a depending annular flange 22 the. inner surface of which receives a brake ring 23 while the outer surface carries brackets 24 on which the outer bobbins 27 are rotatably supported. The brackets are braced together by tie rods and are formed with channels 28 to clear the stationary thread deflecting cams 29. These cams can be increased or diminished in number to vary the pattern of the braid. The take-up drum 31 is driven by bevel gearing 33, 34 from a gear train 35, 36 the members of which cau be exchanged to vary the speed of the take-up. The threads from the outer bobbins reciprocate in gaps 42 of the track 14<a> but are prevented from touching the turret by guard wires 42<a>. Each bobbin head 43 carries a thread deflecting plate. 44 with channels 45 for the threads. The inner surface of the track 14<a> is formed with a groove 46 in which slide guide keys 47 are secured by screws to the heads 43. The bobbins 51 are journaled at the upper ends in the heads 43 and at the lower ends in lenticular plates 50 over the edges of which the outer bobbin threads pass. Normally, these, threads lie in notches 64 in wires 63 mounted on the brackets 24. Coupler pins 52 arranged in pairs and sliding in grooves in the outer surfaces of the turret 9 drive the heads 43, by entering notches therein, each pin being provided with a roller 55 running in a groove in the turret 14, the groove being so shaped as to cause the. coupler pins to be withdrawn one at a time, as they each reach a gap 42, to permit passage of the outer threads. Each pin is mounted on. the end of a readily replaceable resistant element 57 secured to the upper part of the sleeve 8. The presence of these elements relieves wear on the grooves 56. A supply of oil is maintained in the hollow base 1. The oil chamber 21 communicates by means of oil ways 66, - - 70 with the turret 9. The brake ring 23 is mounted on the base 1 by means of screw threads and is turned slightly by the clutch operating mechanism to cause it to engage the flange 22 to bring the machine to rest. The clutch may be operated by hand or by means of a stop motion consisting of a number of stop fingers 74 connected together by rods 75.
