Abstract
A support apparatus for use in aiding the manual support of a power tool comprises a framework adapted to be secured to an operator's back, having a back section (1) and a jib section (3). Located within an elongate guide (7) secured to the back section (1), is a counterbalance weight (11), which is movable along the elongate guide (7) and connected to one end of a cable (13) which extends out of the guide and over pulley wheels (17) on the jib section (3). The free end of the cable (13) has a clip (19) which enables the cable to be secured to a power tool. Preferably the counterbalance weight (11) is slightly heavier than the power tool, so that the power tool is balanced in a desired position and can be manually raised or lowered from this position with a minimum of effort. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements relating to the use of power tools
The present invention relates to a support apparatus for use in aiding the manual support of a powertool during use.
Conventionally power tools are relatively heavy due to the necessary inclusion of a drive motor. Thus, manual operation of such tools over extended periods of time can be extremely tiring. This is especially the case with an electric hedge cutter, where the hedge cutter has to be heldfora period oftime with the arms outstretched whilst the top of a hedge is being cut.
The aim ofthe presentinvention isto provide a supportapparatuswhich can take the weightofa powertool, or at leastthe majoritythereof, off an operator's arms, thus making iteasierto operate the powertool over a period oftime.
According to the present invention there is provided a support apparatus for use in aiding the manual supportofa powertool, said apparatus comprising a framework adapted to be secured to an operator's back, theframeworkhaving a jib section and a back section, a counterbalance weight being displaceably located within an elongate guide secured to the back section, with a cable attached to the counterbalance weight extending outfrom the elongate guide and overfurtherguides on the jib section, thefree end of the cable being adapted to be secured a power tool.
Thus, in use, theframework is secured an operator's back, with the jib section extending over the operator's head. With the free end of the cable attached to a powertool, e.g. an electric hedge cutter, the counterbalance weight slightly exceeds the weight ofthetool, making it easy forthetool to be held and used by the operator for long periods of time, even at arm's length. Slight manual forces on the tool will cause the counter-balance weightto slide up or down the elongate guide, to thus easily lower or raise the tool respectively. Alternatively, the counterbalance weight may be less than or equal to the weight ofthe tool to be supported.
In a preferred embodimentofthe present invention, the back section of the framework is generally rectangular and made of tubular sections, with appropriate padding and straps to secure the framework to an operator's back. The jib section is generallytriangularwith spaced guides in the form of freely rotatable pulleywheels overwhich the cable extends. Finally, the counterbalance weight is of tubular steel filled with lead, theweight being axially displaceable in a rectangular section elongate guide which is closed at its lower end.
With a hedge cutter of approximately 6-3/4 Ibs.
weight a counterbalance of preferably 7-lbs weight is used, so that an operator has to apply 1/4-lb. weight downward force to maintain the required tool position.
Whilstthe preferred embodiment ofthe present invention is preferably proposed to be made of metal, it is envisaged that the framework may alternatively be moulded from a suitable plastics material in one piece or as a number of interlocking sections.
The present invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown.
The support apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a framework made of tubularsections, which is formed by a generally rectangularbacksection 1 and a generallytriangular jib section 3. As an alternative, the framework may be moulded from a suitable plastics material either in one piece or as several interlocking sections.
The back section 1 is provided with appropriate padding and straps 5 for use in securing the framework to an operator's back in the manner of a rucksack. Further, an elongate box-section guide 7 is secured to the back section 1 and is closed at its bottom end 9. Within the guide 7 a counterbalance weight 11 is axially displaceably located, the weight 11 comprising a cylindrical casing filled with lead. The weight 11 is secured to one end of a cable 1 3 which extends out ofthe open top end 15 ofthe guide 7, and across pulley wheel guides 17 on thejib section 3.The depending free end region 19 ofthe cable 13 is adapted to be secured to a powertool A.
In use, with the back section 1 strapped to an operator's back and the jib section 3 extending over the operator's head, the depending free end region 19 ofthe cable 13 is secu red to the powertool A. In this way, the counterbalance weight 1 1 counterbalances at least the majority ofthe weight ofthe power tool A, allowing a minimal force to be applied by the operator to raise or lowerthe powertool A; the counterbalance weight 11 sliding along the elongate guide 7.
In the event that friction hinders the movement of the counterbalance weight along the guide 7,the guide can be greased.
With, for exa m ple, a powertool of 6-3/4 Ibs. weight, a counterbalance weight of approx. 7-lbs is preferred, so that an operator has to apply a downward force of only 1/4-lb. weight to maintain the powertool position.
The present invention thus provides a simple support apparatus for use in aiding the manual support of a powertool during use.
1. Asupport apparatus for use in aiding the manual supportofa powertool, said apparatus comprising a framework adapted to be secured to an operator's back, the framework having a jib section and a back section, a counterbalance weight being displaceably located within an elongate guide secured to the back section, with a cable attached to the counterbalance weight extending outfromtheelon- gate guide and over a cable guide on the jib section, the free end of the cable being adapted to be secured to a power tool.
2. Asupport apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the back section is generally rectangular and made of tubular material, with appropriate padding and straps provided on theframeworkto secure the apparatus to an operator's back.
