Abstract

Compositions comprising resorcin in a physiologically acceptable carrier promote hair growth when topically applied.

Description

SPECIFICATION Hair Growth Promotion The present invention relates to the treatment of baldness and the promotion of hair growth.
Whilst numerous attempts have been previously made over very many years there has still not yet been found a satisfactory method of providing a head of hair on a bald scalp. Various methods which have been tried including for example such elaborate procedures as the transplantation of individual hairs, are very time-consuming and expensive as well as requiring expert intervention.
In many cases the results are moreover inferior to natural hair growth and/or only temporary.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid or minimise one or more of the above disadvantages.
The present invention provides a method of promoting hair growth on a desired part of the human body which method comprises the topical application to said part of a composition comprising resorcerin and a physiologically acceptable carrier therefor.
Preferably the method involves a plurality of applications over a period of several weeks e.g.
from 20 to 40 applications over a period of from 10 to 20 weeks.
With the method of the present invention it has been found that visible growth of hair on previously bald parts and significantly reduced hair loss with some regrowth is obtained in a significant proportion of treated subjects. Whilst in some cases the initial new growth may be relatively fine, a stronger growth is generally achieved after further application of the method of the invention.
Conveniently the composition is applied after washing of the subject's scalp optionally with gentle rubbing of the composition into the scalp.
Advantageously the carrier is selected so as to permit the composition to be subsequently left in place on the scalp until the next occasion of hair washing. Thus for example there is conveniently used a base similar to that used in conventional hair dressings such as a brilliantine solution, a setting gel, or a light cream which would evaporate substantially when placed on a bald head. Desirably the scalp washing is further preceded by a gentle massaging of the scalp in orderto help stimulate the scalp. This massage should be essentially in the form of a gentle manipulation with the finger tips ratherthan a rubbing type of action.
In a further aspect the present invention provides a hair growth promoting composition comprising a hair growth promoting effective amount of resorcerin in intimate admixture with a physiologically acceptable carrier comprising a hair dressing fluid.
In another aspect the present invention provides the use of resorcerin for the manufacture of a product for the promotion of hair growth.
Further preferred features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following examples which are given by way of illustration only.
Example I-Hair growth promoting dressing.
800 m.g. Boracic Acid 200 m.g. Resorcerin (Crude) or same equivalent in Resorcerin BP 400 m.g. SalicylicAcid 2 ml Glycerin 10 ml GlycerinThymol Compound BP 100 ml Industrial or Surgical Spirit 2 ml Oil of Lavender 28 ml Rosewater The above ingredients were thoroughly mixed and then made up to 300 mls of solution with distilled water. If desired a suitable perfume may also be included.
Example Il-Method of promoting hair growth The scalp of a subject suffering from male pattern baldness (MPB)-especially on the bald patch-was gently manipulated with the fingertips for 5 minutes. The subject's head was then shampooed in conventional manner using an ordinary hair shampoo and dried. The contents of a sachet holding approximately 7 mls of a brilliantine dressing containing approximately 5 mg of resorcerin were then applied to the scalp and gently rubbed in for 2 to 3 minutes though this is not essential and if desired the dressing can be simply spread over the area being treated with a minimum of rubbing. The dressing was allowed to remain in place until the next treatment at which the above described procedure was repeated.
The treatment was repeated twice weekly for 15 weeks and at the end of this period the bald patch was found to be substantially covered with small hairs where previously none could be detected.
Although the hair dressing of the invention may be used in conjunction with any conventional hair shampoo, advantageouslythernis used a hair shampoo containing at least some of the ingredients used in the hair dressing itself, for example, all of the ingredients listed in Example I saveforthe resorcerin component.
1. The use of resorcerin for the manufacture of a product for the promotion of hair growth.
2. The use as claimed in claim 1 wherein said product includes at least one of boracic acid, salicylic acid, glycerin thymol, and a lower alkyl alkanol.
3. The use as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said product includes at least one of glycerin, oil of lavender and rosewater.
4. The use of a substance for the manufacture of a hair growth promoting dressing substantially as
