Abstract
216,936. Kostenko, M., and Japolsky, N. March 5, 1923. Commutators and collecting-rings; rotary converters and transformers. - In a high-speed continuous-current generator with a stationary armature and rotating magnet, and collector rings and a commutator, all rotating at a lower speed than that of the magnet, in which the armature is connected to brushes on the rings and the rings are connected to the commutator segments, the product of the magnet speed and the number of its poles is equal to that of the commutator speed and the number of its brush rows. Fig. 2 shows a form in which the stationary armature S is connected to rings I II - - XVI, each of which is connected to three segments of a commutator K 120‹ apart. The bipolar magnet N, S is excited from the commutator. By means of gearing, the rings and commutator are driven at one third of the speed of the magnet. The leads from the stationary armature bars 1, 2, 3 - - to the brushes are brought out through ventilating ducts in the stator iron. The armature may have two independent windings, each connected to a set of rings and a commutator, as shown in Fig. 2, the terminals of the two commutators being connected either in series or in parallel. Fig. 5 shows the application to the conversion of alternating into continuous currents by means of a stationary armature S, supplied from a transformer T, and a rotating magnet R which drives a combination of slip-rings Q and commutator K as previously described. The apparatus is started by disconnecting the armature from the transformer, exciting the magnet from an external source and driving it independently until the voltages induced in the armature are in phase with those of the supply, as shown by synchronizing lamps. Connection is then made to the alternating supply, the magnet excitation is transferred to the continuous-current terminals of the commutator and the independent drive is removed. A form is also described. in which the transformer T is embodied in the armature structure and in which the commutator is driven by a synchronous motor from the alternating supply instead of from the magnet.
