Abstract

A plastics clip (1) for holding a sheet (2) on a support (3) to which a stud (4) is welded has a hinged arm (14) which initially projects in the same direction as the stud, but after assembly of the sheet can be folded over the sheet to hold it. The arm (14) is hinged on a finger bracket (13) at one side of a shank of the clip, which includes a pawl (26), displaced from the axis of the clip at the opposite side, to engage a shoulder (27) in a recess of the arm (14) and hold it in its folded over position. The clip (1) can be readily assembled onto the stud (4) and the arm (14) folded over after superimposing the sheet (2). These operations can readily be performed automatically. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Plastics clip The present invention relates to a plastics clip for fixing a member, such as a heat insulating board or a mat to a support, for example a vehicle body or the like, from which said stud projects, said clip being formed as a one piece clip comprising a shank portion capable of insertion into a fitting hole of the member to be fitted, a flange provided at one end of the shank portion and formed to have a larger diameter than that of said fitting hole, and at least one hinged arm provided at the other end of the shank portion and co-operative with the flange to clamp the member to be fitted.
Usually, for fixing a heat insulating board or a mat to a vehicle body, an L-shaped metal fitting is fixed to the vehicle body, and the upstanding portion of the fixed L-shaped fitting is inserted through a receiving hole of the heat insulating board or the like so as to project from the other side of it, the projecting portion of the metal fitting being bent over to hold the surface of the heat insulating board. This fixing method is disadvantageous in that the operational efficiency is poor since the bending is done by hand and the fitted condition is not stable. Further, because it uses a metal fitting, rust is liable to occur and the fitting is difficult to remove. It is also desirable that a clip for fixing insulating board in vehicle bodies can easily be used for automatic assembly by appropriate facilities on an assembly line.
Accordingly, the present invention aims to provide a clip that can facilitate the fitting operation, can attain stability of the fitted condition, does not cause rust and can be removed easily.
The foregoing object is achieved in accordance with the present invention in that the plastics clips is characterised in that the shank portion is formed centrally with an axial stud receiving hole and inwardly directed shoulders for engagement with a stud, said at least one hinged arm being swingable about an axis normal to the longitudinal direction of the shank portion between an inactive position in which the arm extends longitudinally from the shank portion and an active position in which it projects radially therefrom at the opposite end of the shank portion from said flange to clamp the member to be fixed against the support, the arm being locked in said active position by a pawl projecting from the end of the shank portion and engaging a shoulder of said arm, and said at least one arm being hinged to a finger bracket upstanding from one side of said shank and terminating with the hinge inwardly spaced from the periphery of the said shank.
With the features as described above, the clip can be assembled on a stud by an extremely simple operation capable of automation, and being plastics, there is no risk of rusting; in its fixed condition it is stable and easily removable.
The present invention is further described by way of example only of an embodiment, shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1(a) and (b) are a sectional front view and a sectional side view showing a condition that a member to be fitted is fitted to another member by using a clip according to the present invention: Figures 2 (a)-(h) showing the clip according to the present invention, Figure 2 (a) is a front view, Figure 2 (b) is a plan view, Figure 2 (c) is a left side view, Figure 2 (d) is a right side view, Figure 2 (e) is a bottom view, Figure 2 (f) is a sectional view taken along the line (f)-(f) of Figure 2 (a), Figure 2 (g) is a sectional view taken along the line (g)-(g) of Figure 2 (a), and Figure 2 (h) is a sectional view taken along the line (h)-(h) of Figure 2 (a); and Figures 3 (a), (b) and (c) showing another embodiment clip, Figure 3 (a) is a sectional front view after fitted, Figure 3 (b) is a sectional side view after fitted, and Figure 3 (c) is a front view of the clip.
In Figures 1 (a) and (b), a clip 1 according to the present invention supports an attachment member 2 such as a heat insulating board or a mat and at the same time, by being assembled on a T-stud 4 welded to a vehicle body 3.
Figures 2 (a)-(h) showing details of the clip 1 according to the present invention. The clip 1 comprises a shank portion 11 a flange (12) formed at the lower end of the shank portion 11 and having a larger diameter than a fitting hole 6 of the member to be fitted 2, and an arm 14 provided by a post or finger bracket 13 at the peripheral edge of the upper end of the shank portion 11 and associated with the flange 12 to support the member to be fitted 2. The clip is made of synthetic resin and is moulded as a one-piece clip.
The shank portion 11 is formed with a stud inserting hole 16 to be inserted with the T-stud 4 shown in Figures 1. On the other hand, the shank portion 11 is provided with a pair of engagement pawls 17 extending in the stud inserting hole 16 so that they provide shoulders to engage with a head portion 7 of the stud 4. For making the insertion easy and preventing the inserted stud from slipping off, the engagement pawls 17 incline in such a manner that their inner sides expand toward the flange 12, and an inlet of the stud inserting hole 16 is enlarged to facilitate the insertion. On the side surface of the shank portion 11, a U-shaped slit 18 is formed at a portion where each engagement pawl 17 is provided, and on the side surface above each slit 18, an opening 19 is formed continuously from the slit 18.Therefore, as clearly shown in Figure 1 (f), the stud inserting hole 16 is defined by two guide walls in a complementary configuration.
Since the shank portion 11 is formed with the slits 18 and the openings 19 as described above, not only the engagement pawls 17 can bend easily but also the engagement pawls 17 and the stud inserting hole 16 can be formed as they are inside the shank portion 11 in case of moulding the clip integrally by, for example, a 3-split die and therefore, it becomes possible to manufacture the clip 1 easily and at low cost. Preferably, the diameter of the stud inserting hole 16 is defined by the guide walls 20 to be substantially equal to or slightly larger than the outside diameter of the stud whereby not only it can be inserted with the stud accurately but also the engagement pawls 17 engage with the stud evenly to increase their engagement forces.
Further, the end portions of the engagement pawls 17 extend toward the stud inserting hole 16 and in the opposite direction, namely, radially outwardly from the shank portion 11. When the operator presses these extended portions 21 downwardly by his fingers, the inner end portions of the engagement pawls 17 are retracted from the stud inserting hole 16 to be released from the engagement with the head portion 7 of the stud 4.
The arm 14 is hingedly connected to an end 22 of the horizontal portion of the post 13 extending upwardly from the shank portion 11, that is, it is connected to the shank portion 11 rotatably. Therefore, the arm 14 can take an inactive position in which it upstands in a direction extending upwardly from the shank portion 11 (Figure 2 (a), etc.) and an active position in which it lies in a direction substantially perpendicular to the shank portion 11 (Figure 1 (b)). On the arm 14, a rib 23 is provided at its longitudinal centre to increase the strength. The arm 14 is initially placed in the upstanding position, i.e., it is in the condition that it points upward. For keeping it in the upstanding condition, a downwardly extended portion 24 of the arm 14 is connected through a thin portion 25 (see clip of Figure 3 (c)) to the upper edge of the shank portion 11.The thin portion 25 has such a strength that it can be easily broken when the arm 14 is rotated round the hinge portion 22 into the lying position.
In order to keep the lying condition after rotating the arm 14 into the lying position, the upper end of the shank portion 11 is provided with a pawl or engagement protrusion 26 correspondignly to the downwardly-extended portion 24 of the arm 14.
That is to say, as shown in Figure 1 (b) in the condition that the arm 14 has been rotated into the lying position, the extended portion 24 is engaged with the engagement protrusion 26 to maintain that condition. Thereby, the member 2 is supported between the flange 12 and the arm 14. The inside surface of the end of the arm in the upstanding condition is tapered upwardly whereby its rotating movement is facilitated. It is preferred that as shown in Figure 2 (a), the engagement protrusion 26 slightly inclines toward the end to help the arm 14 rotate easily. It is also preferred that a recess 27 is formed with a shoulder in the portion 24 of the arm 14 where the extended portion 24 comes in contact with the pawl 26 when the arm 14 is laid, the pawl being inclined towards said shoulder. By so doing, the lying condition of the arm 14 can be held more securedly.
A typical method to fit the member 2 to the vehicle body 3 by using the clip 1 constructed as described above will be explained. The following is only an example and it goes without saying that any other method can be employed.
To begin with, the clip 1 in the condition as shown in Figure 2 (a) (i.e. in the condition that the arm 14 remains upstanding) is inserted into the fitting hole 6 of the member 2 to have the upper surface of the flange 12 come in surface-contact with the rear surface of the member to be fitted 2. Next, force is applied to the end of the arm so that the arm 14 is rotated round the hinge 22 clockwise in the Figure 2 (a). At that time, the thin portion 25 breaks and the extended portion 24 comes into engagement with the engagement protrusion 26, the concave portion 27 receiving the end of the protrusion 26. Accordingly, the arm 14 is kept in the lying condition and the member 2 is supported between the flange 12 and the arm 14.In this condition, the shank portion 11 of the clip 1 is inserted with the T-stud 4 fixedly attached to the vehicle body 3 and the engagement pawls 17 engage with the head portion 7 of the stud so that the member to be fitted 2 is fixedly secured to the vehicle body 3. The fixed condition is shown in Figures 1 (a) and (b). It is also possible that the clip 1 according to the present invention is attached to the stud 4 first and then the member to be fitted 2 is fitted to the clip 1.
For removing, by pressing the extended portions 21 of the engagement pawls 17 with a screw driver or the like, the engagement pawls 17 are retracted to be released from the engagement with the stud 4, and the member to be fitted 2 still attached with the clip 1 is detached from the vehicle body 3.
Then, by raising the arm 14 to the upstanding postion, the clip can be detached from the member to be fitted 2. Another method is to raise the arm 14 to the upstanding position first to remove the member 2, and to press the extended portions 21 of the engagement pawls to detach the clip 1 from the stud 4.
Figures 3 (a), (b) and (c) show another embodiment clip according to the present invention. In this case, a stud 4' fixedly attached to the vehicle body 3 is not a T-stud but a threaded stud 4' and therefore the engagement pawls 17 are not provided with extended portions extending outwardly from the shank portion 11. This is because the engagement pawls (and eventually the entire clip) ascend along the thread by rotating the clip and the clip can be detached even though the extended portions are not provided. The rest of the construction is substantially the same with the first embodiment. However, a flange 12' is formed into a somewhat conical shape, not as a flat one as in the first embodiment whereby a deviation of pitches between the fitting hole 6 of the member 2 and the stud 4' can be corrected and the insertion round the stud 4' is held tight. Further, the width of the arm 14 is formed to be slightly narrower but the width can be chosen as desired. Since this embodiment is fitted and removed in the same manner as the first embodiment, description of fitting and removing steps is omitted.
According to the present invention, there is obtained a clip wherein by simple operation of only laying the arm down, the attachment member can be supported reliably, and only by pressing the clip to the stud, it can be fixed to another member tightly, the resultant fitted condition being stable despite the simple operation. The removing operation is also simple and a stable fitted condition is obtained when re-fitted. Since the clip according to the present invention is supported by the member to be fitted, it is convenient in an assembly line that the member to be fitted already attached with the clip can be transported to another member like a vehicle body. Moreover, being formed as a onepiece clip of synthetic resin, the clip according the present invention can prevent rust being caused.
