Arc lamps. - An enclosed arc lamp has two electrodes f, f<1>, preferably of tungsten, mounted on supports e, e' connected to leading-in wires d, d<1>, and an intermediate electrode g of larger diameter not connected to a leading-in wire. The electrode f<1> is normally held against the electrode g by a bimetallic strip i in the support e<1>. The bulb b may contain a filling of rare gas. On the circuit being made, an arc is struck between the electrodes f and g. The electrode f is thereupon withdrawn, striking a second arc between the electrodes f<1> and g. The invention enables a smaller series resistance than is usual to be employed. Bimetallic strips may be mounted in more than one of the carrier stems.
