Abstract

A caravan has an air space underneath its floor into which the balanced flue (19) of a gas-fired heating appliance (11) extends. The appliance is mounted on an internal wall (17), the flue (19) extending rearwardly therefrom and then turning to extend downwardly through the floor. Beneath the floor it ends in a terminal (23) protected by an open mesh grill. The downward protrusion is insufficient to interfere with normal motion of the caravan. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Gas-fired heating appliance This invention relates to a gas-fired heating appliance and more specifically to a fluing arrangement for such a heating appliance. The invention is applicable to dwellings such as caravans or chalets in which the floor is raised above ground level with an air space underneath. Such dwellings will hereinafter be termed "caravans or the like".
The invention provides a gas-fired heating appliance for use in a caravan or the like, which appliance has a fan assisting the flow of combustion air and a balanced flue which extends downwardly from the appliance so as to terminate below the floor level of the caravan or the like.
Preferably the balanced flue extends rearwardly from the appliance and then turns downwardly.
The appliance may be a convector heater and may also have an artificial fuel effect.
By means of the invention the heating appliance may be located almost anywhere in the caravan or the like, not necessarily on an outside wall.
The invention also extends to a heating appliance as described above when mounted in a caravan or the like.
A specific embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a gas heating appliance located in a caravan, and Figure 2 is a side sectional diagram showing the gas heating appliance of Fig. 1.
The gas heating appliance (11) has a combustion air fan (12) which pulls air for combustion from the outside and also acts to pressurize the exhaust gases and thus aid their removal. The appliance provides a major proportion of its heat output in the form of heated air (14), this air being taken from inside the caravan, kept separate from the combustion air, and heated by a heat exchanger (not shown). A glass panel (15) in the front of the fire allows the flames of a burner (not shown) to be seen, and some radiated heat passes through this panel. An artificial fuel effect (16) comprises a simulation of a grate with coal or coke, and is electrically illuminated.
The heater is mounted on an internal wall (17) of the caravan, which wall has an opening (18) for passage of a balanced flue (19) for the heater. As is well known, the flue comprises an inner duct within and separate from an outer duct, so that two separate passageways are formed, one for incoming air and the other for outgoing exhaust fumes. In this arrangement the balanced flue extends a short distance, e.g. 120 mm horizontally, and then turns to extend downwardly through an opening (21) in the floor (22) of the caravan.
Just below the floor it ends in a terminal (23) protected by an open mesh grill (24).
As can be seen, the protrusion below the caravan is short enough not to interfere with the normal movement of the caravan when being towed. It will be clear that by use of the invention the heater (11) may be mounted virtually anywhere in the caravan, not necessarily on an outside wall, since the balanced flue can be located almost anywhere under the floor. Thus the internal design of the caravan is freed from the constraint of having to arrange the lounge around a fire on an exterior wall with provision for a vertically upwardly directed flue.
1. A gas-fired heating appliance for use in a caravan or the like, which appliance has a fan assisting the flow of combustion air and a balanced flue which extends downwardly from the appliance sufficiently to terminate in the air space beneath the floor of the caravan or the like.
2. A gas-fired heating appliance as claimed in claim 1, in which the balanced flue extends rearwardly from the appliance before turning to extend downwardly.
3. A gas-fired heating appliance as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, adapted to provide a major proportion of its heat output in the form of heated air.
4. A gas-fired heating appliance as claimed in claim 3, having a glass front panel allowing flames of a burner to be seen and also radiated heat to pass.
5. A gas-fired heating appliance as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4, having an electrically illuminated artificial fuel effect.
6. A gas-fired heating appliance substantially as described hereinbefore with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A caravan or the like having a heating appliance as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, the balanced flue terminating in the space therebeneath and protruding insufficiently to interfere with normal movement of the caravan.
8. A caravan or the like as claimed in claim 7, wherein said heating appliance is mounted on an internal wall.
9. A caravan or the like having a gas-fired heating appliance substantially as described hereinbefore with reference to the accompanying drawings.
