SPECIFICATION
Ventilated roof structure for an extension building This invention relates to a ventilated roof structure for an extension building.
The roof structure of an extension building is often separate from the roof structure of a main building disposed adjacent the extension building. Usually the roof structure of the extension building is disposed lower than the roof structure of the main building adjacent wall thereof.
In order to provide adequate ventilation to a roof space of the extension building it is desir able to provide a ventilation path to the roof space.
According to the present invention there is provided a ventilated roof structure for an ex tension building comprising a roof space, and ventilation means defining a ventilation path communicating between the roof space and an environment external to the roof space.
Advantageously the ventilation means in- 90 cludes an elongate ventilation member.
Preferably the ventilation men-fber comprises a panel member and baffle means. The baffle means may comprise plurality of baffles, said baffles being disposed in the ventilation path.
The panel member and the baffles may both be arranged so that they extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ventila tion member.
Desirably each baffle is arranged at a different distance from the panel member.
In a preferred embodiment the baffles are arranged in a row, and the row may have an axis extending at an angle to a plane parallel to the ventilation member. Preferably the axis is arranged at an angle between 30' to 60' to the plane parallel to the ventilation member, most preferably 45'.
The baffles are conveniently spaced at an equal distance from one another.
The ventilation member preferably includes support means for supporting the baffles. The support means may comprise a plurality of support members extending substantially transverse to the panel member.
The ventilation means may include a spacer which can be arranged so that it is spaced from the main building in order to define a first portion of the ventilation path which ex- tends between the spacer and the main build- 120 ing.
In one embodiment the spacer may comprise a fascia. The fascia may be any elongate board or panel provided in a roof structure.
In another embodiment the spacer may comprise a panel member and spacing means as described hereinafter.
The ventilation member may be secured to the fascia, and the support means may serve to space the panel member from a face of the 130 fascia to define a second portion of said ventilation path between the panel member and the fascia. The support means may extend over an upper edge of the fascia to define a third portion of said ventilation path extending over said upper edge. The first portion may communicate with the th - i rd portion, and the third portion may communicate with the sec ond portion.
Securing means can be provided for securing the ventilator to the fascia. The securing means preferably comprises wo elongate members which are spaced to form a slot therebetween. A screw or nail having a head of greater diameter than the width of the slot may be inserted through the slot, and screwed or hammered into the upper edge of the fascia until the head of the screw or nail abuts against the elongate members. 85 According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a spacer for providing an air gap between a main building and a roof structure of an extension building, comprising a panel member and spacing means adapted to space the panel member from the main building thereby providing an air gap between the panel member and the main building. The panel member may include a first portion which can extend substantially parallel to a wall of the main building, and a second portion which extends substantially transverse to the first portion.
Preferably, the panel member includes a third portion connecting the first and second 100 portions.
Desirably means is provided to secure the second portion to the roof structure of the extension building.
Advantageously, the spacing means com- prises a plurality of substantially cylindrical elements. Each cylindrical element may be provided on the first portion of the panel member and may extend substantially transverse thereto.
The panel member may include a fourth portion adapted to receive a ventilator. The fourth portion may be provided on, and may extend substantially transverse to, the first portion.
Advantageously the spacer comprises a metal sheet.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a ventilation member for use in a ventilated roof structure according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section along lines 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a ventilated roof structure according to the invention; Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the roof structure shown in Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a roof structure incorporating a spacer according to the invention.
In Figures 1 and 2 a ventilation member 2 GB 2 164 141 A 2 generally designated 1 comprises a panel member 2 to which support means in the form of a plurality of support members 3 are secured. The support members 3 extend sub- stantially transversely to the panel member 2.
The panel member 2 comprises two non coplanar portions 2b and 2c which lie in paral lel planes. The portions 2b and 2c are con nected by a connecting portion 2d.
Baffle means in the form of a plurality of baffles 4 are secured to the support members 3 and extend substantially parallel to the panel member 2. The baffles 4 define a plurality of air flow channels 5.
Securing means comprising two elongate 80 members 6 is attached to the support mem bers 3 and a slot 7 is defined between the elongate members 6.
The support members 3 each include a first portion 8a which can extend along an outer face of a fascia and a second portion 8b which can extend along an upper edge of the fascia. The baffle furthest from the panel member 2 (designated 4a in the drawings) is disposed so that it can engage the outer face of the fascia.
Figures 3 and 4 show the ventilated roof structure according to the invention at the abutment of an extension building with a wall 23 of the main building.
In Figures 3 and 4 the ventilated roof structure of the extension building is of the -flat roof- type. If desired, the ventilated roof structure could be of the ' 'pitched roof- type.
An air gap -d- between the main building and the extension building is defined between the outer wall 23 of the main building and a fascia 24 which is secured to, and supported by, a roof deck 27 of the extension building.
The fascia 24 is secured to battens 25 which serve to space the fascia from the wall 23.
The battens 25 are secured to joists 61 extending transversely to the battens 25; the joists are also secured to the outer wall 23. A floor 62 of the roof structure extends beneath the joists, and a roof space 50 is defined between adjacent joists 61 and between the floor 62 and the roof deck 27.
A nail 12 extends through the slot 7 into an upper edge 24a of the fascia 24 in order to secure the ventilation member 1 to the fascia. A head 12a of the nail 12 is of greater diameter than the width of the slot 7 so that the head abuts against the elongate members 6.
The ventilation member 1 and the fascia 9 comprise ventilation means which define a ventilation path J communicating with an external environment 51 and the roof space 50. A first portion F of the ventilation path J is defined between the fascia 24 and the wall 23.
The first portion 8a of each support member 3 spaces the panel member 2 from an outer face 24b of the fascia 24 in order to define a second portion G of the ventilation path J between the panel member and the outer face. A third portion H of the ventilation path J is defined between the upper edge 24a of the fascia 24 and cover material 28, 29 by the second portion 8b of the spacer members 3. The second portion G communicates with the third path H and extends in a direction which is substantially transverse thereto. The third portion H communicated with the first portion F.
The cover material comprises a roofing board 28 over which lies flashing 29, such as lead flashing.
The roof structure of the extension building is provided with extension building roof cover material 26 which may comprise, for example, asphalt or built up felt. The cover material 26 extends over the roof deck 27 over the outer face 24a of the fascia 24, and between the baffle 4a and the fascia 24.
The roofing board 28 extends from, and is secured to, the battens 25 and engages the upper surface 2a of the panel member 2, to restrict the air flow between the roofing board 28 and the panel member 2, in order to ensure that the only air flow path into the roof space 50 over the fascia 24 is through the first and second portions G and H of the ventilation path J. A wedge (not shown) can be provided between the roofing board 28 and the elongate members 6.
The flashing 29 is arranged over the roofing board 28 and engages the surface of the portion 2b of the ventilator 1. One end of the flashing is arranged so that its outer surface is flush with the outer surface of the portion 2c of the panel member 2. This restricts air flow between the flashing 29 and the ventilation member 1. The other end of the flashing 29 is secured to the wall 23.
The air flow from the external environment 51 to the roof space 50 is shown by arrows J. It will be appreciated that the direction of these arrows may be reversed if the air flow occurs in the opposite direction.
The cross-sectional area available for air flow between the panel member 2 and the fascia board 24 of the roof structure is dependent upon the size and frequency of the baffles 4.
This can be chosen so that the ventilator provides sufficient area for air flow specified to meet the building regulations required by the laws of any country, such as, for example, the U.K. Public Health Act. The baffles 4 also help to prevent ingress of vermin and large insects into the roof structure.
Figure 5 shows a roof structure similar to the roof structure shown in Figures 3 and 4, and like parts have been designated with like reference numerals.
In Figure 5 the fascia designated 24 in Figures 3 and 4 comprises an elongate metal spacer 80. The spacer 80 includes a first por- tion 81 extending substantially parallel to the 3 GB 2 164 141 A 3 wall 23, and a second portion 82 extending substantially transverse to the wall 23. A third portion 83 connects the first and second portions 81 and 82.
Spacing means in the form of a plurality of cylindrical elements 84 are provided on the first portion 81 and serve to space the first portion from the wall 23. This provides the gap d between the first portion 81 and the wall 23.
The second portion 82 is secured to the roof deck 27 by nails 85.
A fourth portion 86 extends substantially transversely from the upper edge of the first portion 81. The ventilator 1 may be secured to the fourth portion 86 in the same way as it is secured to the upper surface 24a of the fascia 24. To this end the fourth portion 86 may be provided with preformed apertures (not shown) to receive the nails or screws 12.
A metal cover 90 replaces the lead flashing 29 shown in Figures 3 and 4. The cover comprises a first portion 91 secured to the wall 23 by screw or nail 94 and a second portion 92 which engages the surface of the portion 2b of the ventilator 1. Both the first and second portions 91 and 92 extend substantially parallel to the wail 23. A connection portion 93 connects the first and second portions 91 and 92. Flashing 95 (such as lead flashing) extends over the first portion 91.
Within the roof space 50 insulation material 97 covers the floor 62. This insulation material 97 may also be provided in the embodi- ment shown in Figures 3 and 4.
