Abstract
A roof guttering and fascia comprising a gutter unit (14) and a fascia unit (15). The rear wall portion (16) of the gutter unit (14) is spaced from the front face (20) of the fascia unit (15) by spacer members (24) to define a gap (25) through which the roof space is ventilated to the atmosphere to prevent the formation of condensation within the roof space. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Roof Guttering and Fascia
This invention relates to a roof guttering and fascia.
Building regulations in the United Kingdom and in other countries require that the space beneath the roof of a building be ventilated to the atmosphere to avoid condensation forming within the roof space which can rot the roof timbers. This requirement has been met by providing a fascia having ventilation openings therein. However this method has not proved entirely satisfactory.
According to the present invention there is provided a roof guttering and fascia in which the gutter has a rear wall portion whose rear side is spaced from the outer face of the fascia to define therebetween a gap through which the roof space is ventilated to the atmosphere.
Preferably the spacing is achieved by the provision of spacer members provided on the roof rafters.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a roof structure of a building provided with a roof guttering and fascia according to the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the roof guttering and fascia shown in Figure 1.
A cavity brick wall is indicated generally at 10 and supports a roof structure which includes rafters 11 and lathes or battens 12 and roofing tiles 13.
The roof gutter and fascia consists of a gutter unit 14 and a combined fascia and soffit unit 15.
The units 14 and 1 5 can be formed of any suitable material but are preferably formed of a fibre reinforced plastics material, such as glass fibre reinforced polyester.
The gutter unit 14 has a rear wail portion 16, a bottom wall portion 17 and a front wall portion 18. The upper end of the rear wall portion 1 6 extends rearwardly in a curved configuration to form a curved portion 19.
The combined fascia and soffit unit 1 5 has a front wall portion 20 which forms the fascia and a transversely extending portion 21 which forms the soffit.
The wall portion 20 of the unit 1 5 contacts and is fixed to the end faces of the rafters 11 and the soffit portion 21 extends over the top layer of bricks of the outer brick shell of the cavity wall 10.
Alternatively the rear edge of the soffit portion 21 can abutt the outer face of the outer brick shell of the cavity wall and be fixed to a batten provided on the outer side of the wall 10.
The curved portion 19 of the gutter unit 14 is engaged with a partly rounded batten 22 which is fixed to and extends across the top side of the rafters 11 at their lower end. The curved portion 1 9 is fixed to the batten 22 by suitable fixings 23, such as nails or screws. Provided on the end face of each rafter 11 and located above the upper edge of the wall portion 20 of the unit 1 5 is a spacer member 24 which may comprise a short length of timber batten. The rear wall portion 1 6 of the gutter unit 14 overlaps the wall portion 20 of the unit 1 5 and is spaced therefrom by the spacer members 24 to define a gap 25 through which the roof space beneath the tiles 1 3 is ventilated to the atmosphere. The gap 25 is preferably 10 mm wide.
It will be appreciated that instead of providing separate spacer members 24 fixed to the ends of the rafters 11 an integral spacer member can be formed on the rear side of the rear wall portion 1 6 of the gutter unit 14 of spaced apart integral spacer members can be formed on the wall portion 20 of the unit 1 5.
The roof structure is also provided with an under-cloak member 26 which lies on top of the rafters 11 and has a curved lower end portion 27 which extends over the curved portion of the gutter unit 14 and a portion 28 which overlaps the rear wall portion 16 on the inside of the gutter.
Claims
1. A roof guttering and fascia in which the gutter has a rear wall portion whose rear side is spaced from the outer face of the fascia to define therebetween a gap through which the roof space is ventilated to the atmosphere.
2. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in claim 1, in which the spacing is effected by spacer members provided on the end faces of the roof rafters.
3. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in claim 1, in which the spacing is effected by spacer members provided on the rear side of the rear wall portion of the gutter or on the outer side of the fascia.
4. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in any preceding claim in which the upper end of the rear wall portion of the gutter extends rearwardly and is curved and said curved portion is engaged with and secured to a partly rounded batten fixed to the upper side of the lower end of the roof rafters.
5. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the fascia is provided with an integral transversely extending soffit portion.
6. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in any preceding claim, formed of a fibre reinforced plastics material.
7. A roof guttering and fascia as claimed in claim 6, formed of a glass fibre reinforced polyester.
8. A roof guttering and fascia substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
