Abstract

An oil free piston and cylinder air-compressor has a reciprocating piston 4, in a cylinder 15, the piston being constructed with a head portion (6), a skirt portion (10) and a resiliently deformable plastics seal member 8, sealingly slideable in said cylinder said seal member being clamped between the head portion and the skirt portion by clamping screws (5, 12) which also serve to clamp a piston gudgeon pin 3, in position in the piston. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Piston and Cylinder Apparatus This invention relates to piston and cylinder apparatus and relates especially to the construction of pistons and the manner of connection thereof to connecting rods.
In a conventional piston and cylinder apparatus such as an internal combustion engine or a piston and cylinder compressor the or each piston is pivotally connected via a connecting rod to a crank pin the connecting rod being connected to the piston through the intermediate of a gudgeon pin. The smaller end of the connecting rod is usually moveable on the gudgeon pin which is located in the piston by circlips or other means.
According to the present invention there is provided piston and cylinder apparatus including a piston connected to a crankpin via gudgeon pin and a connecting rod this gudgeon pin being clamped to the piston.
The gudgeon pin may be clamped by being bolted to the piston or alternatively by being retained by one or more pinch bolts.
The invention further provides piston and cylinder oil free compressor apparatus including a piston constructed with a head portion and a skirt portion and a resiliently deformable plastics seal member sealingly slideable in the cylinder said seal member being clamped between the head portion and the skirt portion.
The seal member may be clamped between the head portion and the skirt portion by means of screw threaded members which press through said portions and into or through a gudgeon pin for pivotally linking a connecting rod to the piston.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will be further described by way of example with reference to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, this shows a part-section through a piston and connecting rod designed for use in a piston and cylinder air compressor which operates with no external lubrication of the piston in the cylinder bore 15. The cylinder bore is preferably cast aluminium but other materials such as steel or cast iron may also be employed.
The connecting rod 1 is provided with a sealed needle roller bearing 2 rotatable on a solid gudgeon pin 3 retained in a generally cylindrical piston assembled of several components. The main body of the piston comprises an upper cast aluminium head portion 4 drilled axially on a diameter to receive two clamping screws 5 having countersunk heads. Adjacent the underside of the part 5 is an inner matching annular portion 6 for receiving respective flat-ground ends of the gudgeon pin 3. These ends of the gudgeon pin are transversely drilled and tapped to receive the screws 5 which thereby serve to clamp the gudgeon pin into position in relation to the portion 6.
In its turn inner portion 6 serves to clamp in position a bead 7 of an upwardly extending carbon-filled polytetrafluorethelene deformable piston seal 8 and a bead 9 of a downwardly extending skirt portion 10. This portion is a good wearing compatible plastic material such as "NYLATRON". Before insertion into the cylinder bore 15 the seal 8 is initially as a flat-washer as indicated at 16.
In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 2, the corresponding parts are given the same references as those used in Fig. 1. It will be seen that in preference to grinding flats on the gudgeon pin to engage the lower annular part 6 the head portion 6 is now provided with downwardly projecting lugs shown dotted having coaxial semi-cylindrical recesses for matching and locating the ends of the gudgeon pin. These ends are clamped in position as before by means of the screws 5.
In an alternative to the arrangement of Fig.
2, as shown in Fig. 3 wherein orthogonal sections are shown superimposed more positive clamping and positioning of the beads of the seal portion 8 and the skirt portion 10 is achieved by arranging for these to extend further radially inwards of the piston and for the clamping bolts 5 to pass through them as shown. More positive location the ends of the gudgeon pin are now also provided by transverse flats 13.
In yet another alternative as shown in Fig.
4, wherein orthogonal sections are again shown superimposed, corresponding reference numerals are again employed and it will be seen that downwardly projecting lugs 11 are again provided for receiving the respective ends of the gudgeon pin 3. In this instance, the lugs are line bored to receive the gudgeon pin and one side of each such lug is sawn with one slot as seen as 12 for each said side and drilled and tapped with a screw thread to receive a pinch-bolt. In the completed assembly these bolts as shown dotted at 13 clamp the gudgeon pin and the respective beads of the seal portion 8 and the skirt portion 10 as previously described in relation to Fig. 1 or Fig. 2. This arrangement may also be modified to allow the pinch-bolts to also pass through the beads of the seal part and skirt portion 10 if required as shown in Fig. 3.
