Abstract

The variable volume expansion chamber 1 accommodates an internal conical part 2 which is axially movable. By the axial movement of the internal conical part 2, the internal volume of the variable volume expansion chamber is varied in relation to the engine revolutions manually or automatically by operating cable 6. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A variable volume expansion chamber for combustion engines Technical Field: This invention relates to combustion engines, in particular to the exhaust systems.
Background Art: Combustion engines, especially two-stroke engines, are very sensitive to the exhaust arrangement. The exhaust system serves to discharge gases after the combustion from the engine cylinder. The exhaust system is controlling the pressures in the cylinder during the period of scavenging and therefore has a great influence on the engine power output and also influence on pollution emitted by the engine.
At present in the two-stroke engine development, there is used a tuned exhaust system, of which the most important part is an expansion chamber, to a particular range of the engine revolution band. Such system is then advantageous only in a narrow part of the revolution band, where it greatly helps to scavenge the engine cylinder. Because of this, the exhaust system's expansion chamber has to be designed as a compromise to suit the whole useble revolution band, wherefore it is only adequate over a very narrow part of the revolution band.
Disclosure of the Invention: According to the present invention, there is provided a variable volume expansion chamber, as a part of the engine exhaust system, especially for two-stroke engines, where there is adjustable internal volume of the said variable volume expansion chamber by an internal conical part in such way, that the said internal conical part is axially movable inside of the said variable volume expansion chamber, and, by the axial movement the internal conical part varies the internal volume of the variable volume expansion chamber.
The axial movement of the said internal conical part inside of the variable volume expansion chamber is controlled in relation to revolutions of the engine mechanically or electronically by a servo-system, and the movement is established in such a way that it gives the variable volume expansion chamber an adequate volume through the usable revolution power band. With this arrangement it is possible to obtain a greater usable power which improves also trackability of the engine and reduces unburned gas pollution.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in section the variable volume expansion chamber with the axially movable internal back conical part in a position of the maximum volume of the variable volume expansion chamber.
Figure 2 shows in section the variable volume expansion chamber with the axially movable internal back conical part in a position of the minimum volume of the variable volume expansion chamber.
Figure 3 shows in section the variable volume expansion chamber with the axially movable internal front conical part in the medium position of the variable volume expansion chamber.
Referring to the accompaning drawing, there is provided the variable volume expansion chamber which comprises a body of the variable volume expansion chamber 1, the axially movable internal back or front conical part 2 with an internal tail or front pipe at its end 3, and a grooved external back or front pipe 4, a return spring 5, and an operating cable 6.
By operating the cable 6 the internal axially movable back or front conical part 2 is moved back and forward and by this movement varying the volume of the variable volume expansion chamber.
1. A variable volume expansion chamber comprising a conventional expansion chamber which accommodates an internal conical part with a cylindrical part at its end, the internal conical part being axially movable inside of the said conventional expansion chamber and by this axial movement varying the internal volume of the said variable volume expansion chamber.
2. A variable volume expansion chamber as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the said internal conical part is accommodated in the back part of the said variable volume expansion chamber.
3. A variable volume expansion chamber as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the said internal conical part is accommodated in the front of the said variable volume expansion chamber.
4. A variable volume expansion chamber as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the said internal conical part comprises two conical parts, both axially movable, of which one is accommodated in the front and second in the back of the said variable volume expansion chamber.
5. A variable volume expansion chamber as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the said internal conical part is axially moved manually or automatically in relation to the revolutions of the engine.
6. A variable volume expansion chamber substantially as described elswhere in this invention with reference to Figs. 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
