Description

SPECIFICATION Mounting apparatus This invention relates to mounting apparatus, and particularly to mounting apparatus for use in mounting a device such as a radio or radio/cassette player in an aperture in the instrument panel of an automobile.
Known such apparatus has many different configurations, but all has the disadvantage that it takes a significant time to mount and remove a device using such apparatus.
According to this invention there is provided mounting apparatus for use in mounting a device in an aperture in the instrument panel of an automobile, comprising a support frame adapted to be secured in the aperture and providing a pair of opposed walls each having a hole therein, and a pair of mounting members adapted to be fixed to a pair of opposite sides of the device respectively, each mounting member having a securing portion which, when the mounting members are fixed to the device and the device is inserted into the support frame, engages in a respective one of said holes in said opposed walls of the support frame thereby to secure the device to the frame.
Preferably each of said opposed walls of the support frame has two holes therein, each mounting member having two securing portions adapted and arranged to engage in the holes in an associated one of said opposed walls, respectively.
Preferably each mounting member is an elongate spring member adapted to be secured to the device at one end.
With such apparatus the or each securing portion on each mounting member can project laterally of the mounting member, and have an edge facing the other end of the mounting portion which is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the mounting member, and an edge facing said one end of the mounting member which slopes away from the axis of the mounting member in the direction towards said other end of the mounting member, the or each securing portion being bent out of the plane of the mounting member away from the device.
The apparatus preferably includes a removal tool insertable between a mounting member and the associated wall of the support frame thereby to disengage the securing portion or portions of the mounting member from the associated hole or holes in the wall of the support frame.
This invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1; Figures 3A and 3B are front views of a part of the apparatus shown in Figure 1, showing securing portions in their normal positions in Figure 3A and in compressed positions in Figure 3B; Figure 4 is a side view of a further support frame usable in the apparatus of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a further em bodiment of apparatus embodying the invention; Figure 6 is a perspective view of a mounting member shown in Figure 5; Figure 7 is a perspective view of a further em bodiment of apparatus embodying the invention; Figure 8 is a perspective view of a mounting member shown in Figure 7; and Figure 9 is a perspective view of a modified form of the tool shown in Figure 5 or Figure 7.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, an instrument panel 3 of an automobile is formed with an aperture through which a support frame 1 is inserted. The support frame 1 defines a rectangular through opening wide and high enough to closely receive therein a car tape player 2, for example. Each vertical side wall of the support frame 1 is formed with a pair of holes 5, while each horizontal wall is formed with a pair of front stop members 6 and rear stop members 7. The front stop members 6 stand vertically outwardly from the front edges of the horizontal walls of the support frame 1. The rear stop members 7 are spaced from the front stop members 6 by a distance equal to the thick ness of the instrument panel 3.The rear stop members 7 are resilient members which originally lie in the same planes as the horizontal walls but which may be bent outwardly from the horizontal walls to cooperate with the front stop members 6 to sandwich the instrument panel 3 therebetween, as best shown in Figure 2.
An elongate mounting member 8 is fixed along each vertical side wall of the tape player 2. Each mounting member 8 includes a pair of securing portion 4 which project upward and downward from the upper and lower edges thereof respectively. Each portion 4 has a substantially vertical front edge and an angled rear edge, and is slightly bent outward away from the vertical side wall of the tape player 2, as best shown in Figure 3A, for engagement in the holes 5 in the support frame 1.
Each horizontal wall of the tape player 2 has formed near the front edge thereof a pair of protuberances 9 which stand vertically outwardly from the wall and are engageable with the front stop members 6 of the support frame 1. The distance C between the protuberances 9 and the securing portions 4 as measured in the horizontal direction of the tape player 2, is equal to the distance D from the front edge of the front stop members 6 to the rear end of the rear stop members 7.
With this apparatus, the support frame 1 is inserted in the aperture in the instrument panel 3 to the extent that the front stop members 6 abut the instrument panel 3. In this position, the rear stop members 7 are bent and raised at the back of the instrument panel 3. Thus, the support frame 1 is immovably fixed to the instrument panel 3. Thereafter the tape player 2 is inserted into the support frame 1 as indicated by an arrow in Figure 2. The securing portions 4 which slightly project from the vertical walls of the tape player 2 abut the front end of the support frame 1 as the tape player 2 is inserted. However, with an increased pushing force, the portions 4 are readily compressed and deformed toward the vertical walls by the front edge of the support frame 1 and enter the support frame in a smooth fashion, because as described the rear edges of the securing portions 4 are angled. When the portions 4 reach the holes 5 after moving the distance D under compression by the vertical walls of the support frame 1, the portions 4 are allowed to return to their original configurations due to their resiliency and engagingly enter the holes 5. At the same time, the protuberances 9 at the front end of the tape player 2 engage the front stop members 6. Thus, the tape player 2 is reliably fixed to the support frame 1 and hence to the instrument panel 3.
Each mounting member 8 may be provided with a portion 10 near the front end thereof, which engages the front end of the vertical wall of the support frame 5 to also serve as a stop.
The support frame 1 may be shorter than that of Figures 1 and 2 provided it is longer than the distance D. Figure 4 shows a much shorter configuration of support frame. The holes 5 may be rectangular cut-outs which are open rearwardly as shown in Figure 4.
Referring now to Figure 5, this shows a removal tool particularly suitable for removal of the tape player 2 from apparatus substantially as described above.
The removal tool 11 is a flat plate having a wedge-shaped end 12 defined by symmeterically angled side edges 13.
With mounting apparatus 14 similar to that of Figures 1 through 4, a car radio 15 is provided with elongate mounting members 16 fixed to the vertical walls of the radio 15 by bolts 20, the members 16 each having a shape best shown in Figure 6.
The mounting members 16 engage a support frame 17 and fix the car radio 15 to the instrument panel (not shown) of a car in a similar manner as described before.
Each mounting member 16 is formed with a through hole elongate in the length direction of the member. From the opposite longer edges of each mounting member extend a pair of securing portions 19.
Each vertical wall of the support frame 17 is formed with a pair of holes 21 engageable with the securing portions 19 to secure the car radio 15 to the support frame 17.
The removal tool 11 is formed with window W into which a finger may be inserted to pull it on re- moval.
With this arrangement, the wedge-shaped end 12 of the removal tool 11 is inserted into the gap between the vertical wall of the support frame 17 and the mounting member 16 on the vertical wall of the car radio 15. As the removal tool 11 advances, the securing portions 19 are forcibly disengaged from the holes 21 by the angled side edges 13 of the removal tool 11, and the mounting member 16 becomes free from the support frame 17. The car radio 15 can then be removed from the support frame 17 by drawing it out.
Figure 7 shows a further embodiment of apparatus embodying the invention. A slightly modified mounting member 16' is formed near the front end thereof with a hooking portion 22, as best shown in Figure 8. A slightly modified removal tool 11' is formed with a hole 23 engageable with the portion 22.
With this arrangement, when the wedge-shaped end 12 of the removal tool is inserted into the gap between the mounting member 16' and the support frame 17, the portion 22 is first compressed by the removal tool 11' and then due to its resiliency hooks into the hole 23 in the removal tool 11' when or after the mounting member 16' becomes free from the support frame 17. Thus, the mounting member 16' and the removal tool 11' are engaged with each other so that the car radio 15 can be removed from the support frame 17 by pulling the removal tool 11'.
Figure 9 shows a further embodiment of apparatus embodying the invention. A modified removal tool 11" is formed in the wedge-shaped end thereof with an elongate hole 24.
With this arrangement, when the wedge-shaped end 13 of the removal tool 11" is inserted into the gap between the mounting member 16' and the support frame 17 of Figures 7 and 8, the hooking member 22 of the mounting member 16' can freely move in the elongate hole 24 before it engages the hole 23 of the removal tool when or after the mounting member 16' becomes free from the support frame 17. Therefore, friction between the member 22 and the removal tool 11" is minimized so as to facilitate insertion of the removal tool 11".
Once the member 22 engages in the hole 23, the car radio 15 can be readily removed from the support frame 17 by pulling on the removal tool 11".
As described above, the mounting apparatus of the invention has a simple configuration and enables an operator to readily mount a device in position in an automobile. Further, the mounting members do not project into the device. Additionally, the use of the described removal tool enables an operator to reliably and readily remove the device from its mounted position.
