Abstract

A plasterboard jig has a base (10), a telescopic body (12), a lever arm and ratchet system (13), an H- shaped support (14) and a locking bolt (15). It can easily be maneoveured, dismantled, transported and re-assembled. When assembled, the operator can quickly and easily lift, position and nail, sheets of plasterboard to ceiling joists, single-handed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Plasterboard jig This invention relates to a Plasterboard jig to aid the lifting of plasterboard to ceiling joists.
Plasterboard is sold in sheets measuring 1200 mm X 2438 mm. Because the board is relatively light, one man can easily lift a single sheet. However, to lift, position and nail a sheet to ceiling joists, two people are required, because of the size of the sheet and the number of simultaneous operations needed to complete the entire operation.
Generally, stools are used to gain maximum height. The overall operation requires two people, a great deal of discomfort, and unnecessary labour cost.
According to the present invention, there is provided a Plasterboard jig, comprising: (a) a base with castor wheel at the end of each leg (b) a telescopic body which locates into the centre of the base (c) an H-shaped support which locates into the top of the telescopic body (d) a lever arm and ratchet system which fixes onto the telescopic body (e) a locking bolt with T-shaped end, as a means of clamping the inner and outer tubing of the telescopic body at any height.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows, in perspective, the plasterboard jig fully assembled and partly raised Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the plasterboard jig Figure 3 shows a detailed cross-section of the ratchet system and telescopic body Figure 4 shows the ratchet system in perspective Figure 5 shows a series of diagrams illustrating the sequence of operations required to lift the jig Referring to the drawings, the jig comprises:: a base (10) a telescopic body (12) a lever arm support (1 2a) a ratchet latch (1 2b) a lever arm (13) a lever arm upright (1 3a) a ratchet ring (13b) a ratchet tooth (1 3c) an H-shaoed support (14) a locking bolt with T-shaped end (15) PROCEDURE FOR ASSEMBLING THE JIG (i) Place the telescopic body (12) into the vertical tubing on the base (10) and lock into position by means of a threaded rod (ii) Position the ratchet ring (1 3b) over the top of the inner tubing of the telescopic body (12). Pass a bolt through the lever arm (13) and the lever arm support (1 2a) and secure by means of a T-bolt. This forms the lever arm pivot (iii) Slot the H-shaped support (14) into the top of the telescopic body (12) and secure by means of a bolt and wing nut To dismantle the jig, the steps described above are carried out in reverse sequence.
PROCEDURE FOR OPERATING THE JIG To raise jug 1 Place a sheet of plasterboard on top of the H-shaped support (14) 2 Push downwards on free end of lever arm (13). This raises the H-support (14) to the maximum height of the lever arm upright (13a) 3 Raise the free end of the lever arm (13).
This immediately allows the ratchet latch (1 2b) to lock into the first hole on the nearside of the telescopic inner tubing, thus preventing the H-support from falling 4 Push downwards again on the free end of the lever arm (13). This causes the ratchet tooth (1 3c) on the ratchet ring (1 3b) to locate into the first hole on the blind side of the telescopic inner tube. Continued pressure on the lever arm again raises the H-support to the maximum height of the lever arm upright (13a) 5 Repeat Stage 3 This process can be repeated once more to take the H-support to its maximum height.
In operation, the jig can be used to place plasterboard at varying heights. When the required height is reached, i.e., just below the ceiling joists, screw up the locking bolt (15), whilst maintaining pressure on the lever arm, to lock together the inner and outer tubing of the telescopic body. The lever arm (13) can then be released and the jig wheeled into the exact position required.
To wedge the plasterboard tightly to the ceiling, press the lever arm downwards until the ratchet tooth locks into one of the holes in the telescopic tubing. Keeping pressure on the free end of the lever-arm (13), free the locking bolt (15) and take the H-support (14) to the ceiling joists. Re-fasten the locking bolt (15) and release the lever arm. The operator then has both hands free to: nail the plasterboard to the joists.
To lower jig 1. Press downwards on lever arm (13) until the ratchet tooth (1 3c) locates into a hole on the blind side of the telescopic body.
2 Keeping pressure on the lever arm, unscrew locking bolt (15) 3 The free end of the lever arm (13) can then be raised with controlled movement to lower the H-support (14) until the ratchet latch (1 2b) locks into the next hole on the nearside of the telescopic tubing (12) 4 Press the lower lever arm down and simultaneously flip the ratchet ring (1 3b) upwards to prevent the ratchet tooth (1 3c) from locking into the immediate hole on the blind side of the telescopic tubing.
5 Continue pressing down the lever arm (13) until the lever arm upright (1 3a) is at maximum height 6 Raise the lever arm (13) and simultaneously flip ratchet latch (1 2b) from its locating hole on the nearside of the telescopic tubing 7 Repeat Steps 3, 4, 5 and 6 8 Finally raise lever arm (13) to allow the H-support to be lowered into its original position.
