Abstract
A frame 1 including, beneath and hidden by the glass retaining strip 2, one or more angled shaped elements 3 which are securely attached in the groove 11 and which each have an upstanding retaining limb 32 which projects beyond the outside edge 41 of the window surface 4 and thus prevents unauthorised removal of the window surface. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Profiled frames for windows or doors
The invention concerns profiled frames for windows, doors or the like, and of the type comprising a glass-retaining strip which can be inserted into a channel for the glass or a groove in the glazing strip after the window surfaces have been glazed.
Very many forms of such frame construction with subsequently attachable glass-retaining strips are known. German Utility Model 7130466 forms part of the prior art. The frame profile construction described therein and comprising a glazing bar which can be subsequently fitted provides an excellent means of glazing window surfaces.
This prior art also discloses the possibility of removing the glass from a window surface that has already been glazed, this being achieved by removing the glass-retaining strip from its seat in the profiled frame. The window surface can then be removed from its seat. It is important to be able to do this, e.g. when replacing damaged window surfaces, etc. However, this arrangement also makes it possible for an unauthorised person to open a window of this kind if, for example, the glass-retaining strip is inserted into the profiled frame from the outside. This can be the case with solidly glazed windows or multi-part window elements which have outwardly opening casements. In this way, complicated and therefore expensive joints, e.g.
welding of the blind frames, are avoided. These glazing bars, fitted from the exterior, therefore make it undesirably possible for them to be removed from outside by an unauthorised person, for the window surface to be removed and therefore to permit entry into the premises, for example.
The present invention seeks to reduce or eliminate this disadvantage and to provide a profiled frame having exterior glazing which, despite the insertion of the glazing bar from the exterior, prevents unauthorised removal of the window surface.
According to the invention, there is provided a profiled frame for windows, doors or the like, and comprising a glass-retaining strip which can be inserted into a channel for the glass or a groove in the glazing strip after the window surface has been glazed, said frame being characterised in that a single angled shaped element or several spaced angled shaped elements are secured in the channel for the glass or in the groove in the glazing bar, the or each of which elements has a lower limb lying against the bottom of said channel or groove, a retaining limb which is angled upwardly from the lower limb in such a way as to project beyond the end-walls of the window surface, when fitted, and wherein said element or elements are covered by the glass-retaining strip.
Although it is possible to remove the glass-retaining strips when, in accordance with the invention, the angled shaped elements, which can also be designated as safety means for preventing unauthorised removal of the glass, are inserted in the channel for the glass or in the glass-retaining grooves, the window surface cannot be readily pulled out through the retaining limbs of the angled shaped elements which project beyond the end-walls of the window surface, said retain-limbs projecting upwardly from the channel for the glass or from the glass-retaining groove.
Of importance in this connection is that the bottom limbs of the angled shaped elements are secured at the bottom of the channel for the glass or of the glass-retaining groove in such a way that unauthorised removal cannot take place. Advantageously, the lower limb of each angled shaped element is secured to the bottom of the channel or groove by means of rivets extending through central openings. A rivet connection of this kind could be broken only by powerful blows or by being drilled out. Such measures would, however, cause noise because of breakage of the window surface, so that countermeasures could be promptly taken to prevent a planned break-in.
The lower limb of each shaped element can also be secured to the bottom of the groove in the glazing bar or of the channel for the glass by means of clips, screws, and/or adhesives. What is meant here is not, of course, simple clip or screw connections which can be broken by easy means after the glass-retaining strip has been removed. The clip or screw connections that would be used are of a special kind known in the art which, when adhesives or latching devices, for example, are incorporated in them, can be broken only by specialists.
An advantage in this arrangement is that unauthorised entry into premises by simple removal of an externally glazed window surface is prevented.
A further advantage is that if the window surface is damaged or broken, it can be replaced by a new one, this being achieved by an expert who removes the glass-retaining strip, takes out the angled shaped element or elements by means of special tools and removes the damaged window surface.
In order that the invention may be better understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-section view of a profiled frame having an inserted glass-retaining strip and angled shaped element; and
Figure 2 is a cross-section, on a larger scale, through the angled shaped element of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a profiled frame 1 in the form of a hollow section and made, for example, of plastics material, and a glass retaining strip 2, inserted in a groove 11 formed in the glazing bar. The glass-retaining strip is secured in the groove 11 by means of a latching arrangement. An angled shaped element 3 is secured by its lower limb 31 to the bottom 111 of the groove 11 in the glazing bar. Attachment of the element can be achieved by means of rivets, screws, clips and/or adhesives. Extending from the lower limb 31 of the angled shaped element 3 is a retaining limb 32, the actual retaining face 321 being directed at right angles to the lower limb 31.
It will be clearly seen from the illustration that the retaining face 321 of the limb 32 projects be yond the end-face 41 of the associated window surface 4. Inserted at the upper part of the glassretaining strip 2 is a standard sealing means 5 which faces the window surface 4.
If the glass-retaining strip 2 is removed from its latching seat in the groove 11 of the glazing bar, the window surface 4 cannot be removed because of the overlying portion of the retaining surface 321 of the limb 32. it is recommended that several of the angled shaped elements 3 in accordance with the invention be inserted in spaced relationship in the channel or groove of the profiled frame 1 herein described.
Figure 2 shows, on a larger scale, the angled shaped element 3 comprising the lower limb 31 and the retaining limb 32 having a retaining surface 321. The lower limb 31 has a connecting opening 311 which extends obliquely downwards.
This obliquely extending connecting opening 311 can be advantageous since, when a window surface has already been inserted, the securing holes can be drilled without the risk of damage to the window surface. The shorter portion 312 of the lower limb 31 of the angled shaped element engages behind the latching lugs associated with the channel for the glass or the groove in the glazing bar, as illustrated diagrammatically in Figure 1.
