Abstract
Weathering member 5 has on its upper side a hook-like member 10 which extends between the side edges of those tiles directly overlying the weathering member 5 and engages over the tail end of a tile 1 in the adjacent row above. Flange 6 engages the top side of batten 2. Member 5 may also be secured to batten 2 by nails through apertures 7. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Weathering member for roofing systems
This invention relates to a weathering member for a roofing system of the type comprising overlapping rows of tiles, slates or other individual units.
In such a roofing system the roof tiles or like units are generally supported by a plurality of battens secured transversely to the roof rafters. Conventionally, the top end of each tile or unit is provided with one or more nibs on its underside adapted to engage the top edge of the batten upon which the tile rests in order to prevent the tile sliding from the roof. The tail ends of the tiles in a particular row rest on the top portions of the tiles in the adjacent lower row whereby water may run from one tile to the next without seeping into the underlying roof space.
In such systems it is known to provide weathering or sealing members which underlie the tiles at least in the region of the side edges thereof, such members being arranged to drain any water seeping between the side edges of the tiles or units in a particular row to the upper surface of the tiles or units in the adjacent lower row. It is particularly desirable to provide such sealing or weathering members where a roofing system comprises, for example, so-called plain tiles or traditional slates which do not interlock laterally with one another, the side edges of one tile or slate simply abutting the edges of the adjacent units in the row.In the absence of a sealing or weathering member with such systems in order to avoid water seeping to beneath the roof space it is necessary to lay the tiles or slates substantially three deep in a staggered manner such that the side joints between the tiles in any one row are underlaid by tiles in at least one underlying row, staggered from the first.
Where weathering or sealing members are provided this is not necessary and the tiles or slates may be laid in a conventional manner, i.e. with only the front and rear portions of the tiles overlapping one another. A weathering member of this type is disclosed in British Patent specification 2131060, such member being adapted to underlie a plurality of tiles in a row.
In any roofing system comprising tiles, slates or other individual units it is usually necessary to secure the tiles or other units to the roof adjacent their tail ends. Traditionally this has been achieved by means of clips adapted to be secured e.g. by nailing to the roof battens. Such clips are however somewhat time consuming to install, and moreover where an underlying sealing or weathering member is provided it is necessary to include apertures in the member which have to be aligned with the clips before such can be engaged with the battens and this can complicate the roofing process.
Viewed from a first aspect the invention provides a weathering member adapted to be located beneath roof tiles, slates or like units of a roofing system at least in the region of the side edges thereof, such member being securable to a roof batten or like component of the system and comprising on its upper side a hook like member arranged to extend in use between the side edges of those tiles or units directly overlying said member and to engage over the tail end of a tile or unit in the adjacent row above.
Thus, in accordance with the invention the hook like portion of the weathering member is effective to secure the tail end of an overlying tile, and the use of tile clips may therefore be avoided.
It is envisaged that a weathering member in accordance with this invention may be adapted to underlie several tiles in a particular row in which case an appropriate number of hook like members is provided to extend between each of the tiles directly overlying the member. In a preferred embodiment, however, weathering members in accordance with the invention are adapted to underlie the tiles only in the region of the side edges thereof such that in use separate weathering members are provided beneath each of the side joints of the tiles.
Weathering members in accordance with the invention may convenientlly be adapted to be secured to the roof battens by nailing, and in a preferred embodiment each member includes towards its top end an abutment on its underside which in use engages the top edge of the roof batten of the system upon which the member rests.
Such an abutment, which may conveniently be formed by a flange projecting downwardly from the underside of the weathering member, assists in correctly locating each member on a batten before it is secured thereto.
The hook like member or members of each weathering member may take any convenient form, although it will be appreciated that such should be sufficiently narrow to extend between the tiles without the spacing between the side edges thereof being undesirably large. In a preferred embodiment, each hook like member forms part of a rib provided on the upper side of the weathering member which rib is located in use between the side edges of the overlying tiles. The provision of a rib assists in locating the tiles correctly relative to the weathering member.
In a preferred embodiment the weathering member includes a number of longitudinal grooves which assist in the drainage of any water penetrating between the side edges of the overlying tiles to the upper surface of a tile in the adjacent row below. It is envisaged that sealing beads of a suitable resilient material such as neoprene may be provided at the side edges of the weathering member which are adapted to engage the undersides of the tiles whereby to ensure that any water impinging on the weathering member cannot run off the side edges thereof into the roof space. The weathering member may conveniently be fabricated from a suitable plastics material such as P.V.C., and where sealing beads are provided it is envisaged that these could be moulded integrally with the member whereby to simplify the fabrication process.
Viewed from a second aspect the invention provides a roofing system comprising a plurality of roof tiles, slates or like units arranged in partially overlapping rows supported by transverse battens or like supporting members, wherein weathering members are located beneath the units at least in the region of their side edges and are secured to the transverse supporting members, each weathering member including a hook like member which extends between the side edges of those tiles directly overlying the weathering member and engages over the tail end of a tile or unit in the adjacent row above.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross-section through part of a roofing system incorporating weathering members in accordance with this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of part of the roofing system of Figure 1; and
Figures 3 and 4 are respectively plan and front elevational views of a weathering member of the sort used in the system illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, a pitched roof includes a plurality of overlapping roof tiles 1 supported by means of transverse wooden battens 2 which are in turn secured to the roof rafters 3, a layer of roofing felt 4 being disposed beneath the tiles as is conventional. As shown in Figure 1, the tiles in adjacent rows partially overlap one another and are staggered such that water impinging on the roof runs down the tiles and into a gutter (not shown) secured adjacent the eaves of the building.
The illustrated roofing system further comprises weathering members 5 located beneath the side edges of the tiles. The weathering members 5 are effective to drain any water seeping between the side edges of the tiles in a particular row to the upper surfaces of the tiles in the next row down and in this way plain tiles, i.e. those not interlocking with one another at their side edges, or slates may be laid as shown in a single overlap arrangement, the problem of water entering the roof space via the abutting side edges of the tiles being avoided.
Each weathering member 5 is moulded from a suitable plastics materials such as P.V.C. and is provided adjacent its top end with a downwardly projecting flange 6 which engages the top side of the batten 2 upon which the member rests. Apertures 7 are also provided adjacent the top end of the member 5 to enable the member to be secured to the underlying batten by means of nails (not shown). The upper surface of the weathering member 5 is formed with a plurality of longitudinal grooves 8 which assist in draining any water impinging thereon onto the upper surface of the tile below. Each weathering member further comprises on its upper side a central, longitudinally extending rib 9 which is located between the side edges of the two tiles directly overlying the member, and a hook like member 10 which extends above the overlying tiles, between the side edges thereof, and engages over the tail end of a tile in the adjacent row above as shown in Figure 2. In this way, the tiles may be secured to the roof without the use of traditional tile clips.
As shown in Figure 3, the illustrated weathering member 5 includes cut away portions 11 adjacent its top end whereby spaced nibs 12 (Figure 2) of the tiles may be accommodated. It will however be appreciated that the weathering member may easily be adapted to accommodate different configurations of tile nib.
Claims (10)
1. A weathering member adapted to be located beneath roof tiles, slates or like units of a roofing system at least in the region of the side edges thereof, such member being securable to a roof batten or like component of the system and comprising on its upper side a hook like member arranged to extend in use between the side edges of those tiles or units directly overlying said member and to engage over the tail end of a tile or unit in the adjacent row above.
2. A weathering member as claimed in claim 1 including towards its top end an abutment on the underside adapted to engage in use the top edge of a roof batten of the system upon which the member rests.
3. A weathering member as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the hook like member forms part of a rib provided on the upper side of the weathering member, such rib being located in use between side edges of the overlying tiles or the like.
4. A weathering member as claimed in any preceding claim including longitudinally extending drainage grooves.
5. A weathering member substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. A roofing system comprising a plurality of roof tiles, slates or like units arranged in partially overlapping rows supported by transverse battens or like supporting members, wherein weathering members are located beneath the units at least in the region of their side edges and are secured to the transverse supporting members, each weathering member including a hook like member which extends between the side edges of those tiles directly overlying the weathering member and engages over the tail end of a tile or unit in the adjacent row above.
7. A roofing system as claimed in claim 6 wherein individual weathering members underly the tiles or the like only in the region of the side edges thereof.
8. A roofing system as claimed in claim 7 wherein each weathering member includes resilient sealing beads at its side edges which engage the undersides of the tiles.
9. A roofing system as claim in any of claims 6 to 8 wherein the weathering members are as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5.
10. A roofing system substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
