Description

SPECIFICATION Roofing elements This invention relates to roofing elements.
When a roof of a new building has to be joined to an existing building of different height it is essential that there is no possibility of water leakage or seepage through the abutment or join.
Commonly such abutments are sealed by using a plurality of lead elements, commonly termed soakers, one for each edge tile of the roof adjacent the existing wall. Each element has a portion which at least partially covers the tile surface and a top lip which is turned over the top edge of the tile to retain the element on the tile surface. A side edge of each element is turned upwardly against the existing wall. An elongate flashing is then secured to the wall, the bottom edge of the flashing overlying the upturned side edges of the soaker elements. The flashing is secured by having a generally zig-zag top edge with generally horizontal portions that are inserted into the mortar between vertically adjacent courses of bricks in the wall.
Thus water running down the wall will pass over the flashing and run down the soaker to suitable guttering.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an improved roofing element for sealing a raking abutment between a pitched roof and a vertical wall.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided an elongate roofing element comprising a first edge portion for securing the element to a wall of an existing building, a second opposite edge portion arranged to lie substantially parallel with the roof of a new building and adapted to receive roofing material, such as tiles or slates, on the upper face of the second edge portion, and a channel-shaped portion intermediate said edge portions, whereby in use when the first edge portions, whereby in use when the first edge portion is sealingly attached to the existing building and the second edge portion is attached to the roof of the new building, water in the vicinity of the abutment of the two buildings is directed into the channel along which it can flow to suitable guttering.
Preferably, the roofing element is of plastics material, for example fibre glass, and is preferably "pultruded". Thus long elements can run the whole depth of the roof.
The first edge portion is preferably angled to a downwardly depending leg, the lower part of which forms a side wall of the channel portion, the other side wall of which is joined to the second edge portion.
The second edge portion preferably comprises a generally flat part adjacent the channel, said flat part having a key, for example one or more sanded areas, for receiving mortar on which a tile or the like can be bedded, and a part having at least one upstanding projection arranged to prevent water passing transversely across the second edge portion. Preferably, two such projections are provided so that if water does pass over the inner projection it can be carried away in the channel formed between the projections.
Alternatively when the roofing element is to be used with slate the keyed portion may be omitted.
Beyond the outer projection is a laterally extending portion through which nails can be passed to secure the element to roof battens. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of sealing an abutment between an existing building and the roof of a new building using an element according to the invention, said method comprising the steps of securing the first edge portion sealingly to the existing building, securing the second edge portion to roofing battens of the new building, and laying roofing material on said second edge portion.
A roofing element according to the invention and a method of attaching it between a raked roof and a vertical wall will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa top plan view of the element, for use with a roof having tiles, Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the element, Figure 3 is an enlarged view of part X of Figure 1 and Figure 4 is a sectional view showing the attachment of the element.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the element is a unitary elongate element and comprises a first, generally horizontal edge portion 1, a second generally horizontal edge portion 2 and a channel portion 3 intermediate said edge portions 1, 2. Downwardly depending from the edge portion 2 is a sloping leg 4 which is preferably at an angle of about 95 degrees to the edge portion 1. The length of the leg 4 is preferably equivalent to two courses of standard bricks, but may be of any desired length to suit particular applications. The bottom part of the leg 4 forms a side wall 5 of the channel portion 3 which has a generally horizontal base 6 and another sloping side wall 7 which is angled to the base preferably at an angle of about 120 degrees.
Integral with the channel side wall 7 is the second edge portion 2 which comprises a generally horizontal flat. part 8. When it is to be used to support tiles, the flat part 8 may have on its upper surface a key 9, for example an area of sand glued to the part 8. Laterally outwardly of the part 8 are two spaced-apart upstanding projections 11, 12 and outwardly of those is another flat part 13 through which nails can be driven as will be described.
Figure 4 shows how the element is attached between a vertical wall 14 and a raked roof 15.
Roofing felt 16 is run overthe eaves 17 of the roof 15 in the usual way, the edge of the felt extending to the wall 14 and being upturned as shown. The felt 16 is held in place by battens 18 in the usual manner.
The edge portion 1 of the element is secured to the wall 14 by cutting an elongate slot 19 in the wall and securing the portion 1 in the slot 19 by means of a mastic 21 or other suitable material.
Preferably, the edge batten is so positioned to suit the dimensions of the element and provide sufficient support of the edge portion 2. The edge portion 2 is located over the top of the battens 18 and is secured along its length by nails 22 hammered through the flat part 13 into the battens 18 at suitable intervals. Tiles 23 are then placed over the edge portion 2 and secured to the key 9 by a mortar bed 24.
For the attachment of slates the mortar bed 24 and key 9 are not required and the slates are simply nailed to the battens 18. With the use of slates, it is preferred that there be a minimum gap of 25 mm between the leg 4 and the slate edge.
In order to accommodate tiles, the element is preferably of different lateral dimensions. For example, for use with tiles the channel base may be about 31 mm instead of 41 mm, the length of flat part 8 also being less since it does not have the keyed portion 9.
Thus the gap 25 between the wall 14 and roof 15 is completely sealed and watertight, any water in the vicinity being directed into the channel portion 3, along which it passes to suitable guttering. Any water which might come up against the projections 11,12 and is again directed to guttering. It will be seen from Figure 3 that the projections are specially shaped in cross-section to minimise the risk of passage of water towards the water edge thereby water cannot pass into the roof.
The element is preferably "pultruded" from suitable plastics material, such as glass fibre, and may be made to any suitable length. Thus an element may be made to extend the whole depth of the roof 15.
Compared to the previous use of lead elements, the above-described element is cheaper two produce, is long-lasting and is much simple to install.
