Abstract
Chocolate coating material from a vessel 10 is fed by a pump 12 via lines 13 to distributor flanges 14, 15 and thence via a larger number of fed lines 16 to closed distributors 17 arranged above and below a horizontal lattice conveyor 8 carrying articles 2 to be coated. Each distributor 17 has an adjustable slit-like opening through which the coating material emerges, those above the conveyor producing a curtain 24 of coating material which forms the top and side coating and that below the conveyor forming the bottom coating. Regulators 18 maybe present in the feed lines 16 to equalise the flow in the different lines. A heater may be used in the distributor or feed lines. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for coating confectionery articles
This invention relates to an apparatusforcoating confectionery articles with cocoa-containing, temper
ature controlled and flowable material, especially
chocolate.
In known types of such apparatus, the flowable material is conveyed by means of a pump from a
storage vessel and through a pipeline into an outlet trough and into a lower container, from which it then
leaves in such a way that the article to be coated
receives, on its upper face, a top coating and on its
lowerface a bottom coating. The top coating is usually
produced by discharging the material through adjust
able gaps in the outlet trough which permitthe formation of a curtain of the material. The bottom coating is generated by means of a revolving roller which issituated in the lowercontainer.
Difficulties arise in the known applicance of this kind, because the coating material is viscous and flows with difficulty out ofthe narrow gaps ofthe outlet trough. The width of each gap ofthe outlet trough cannot, furthermore, be increased, since other wisethe curtain would become too thick and too much material would flow onto the article.
The object ofthe present invention therefore is the provision of an apparatusforthe coating ofconfec- tionery articles, which will operate satisfactorily even with viscous coating material.
This is achieved in accordance with the invention by means of apparatus including a coating device comprising at least one closed distributor having a slit-shaped opening and connected to a source of coating material by a number of feed lines. The feed lines are connected to the distributorsothatthe slit-shaped opening is supplied uniformly with coating material over its entire length. From this slitshaped opening the coating material then emerges from the closed distributor underthe It pressure existing in the feed lines and not as previously, substantially unpressurised. The coating material is thereforeforced by meansofthe pumpasfarasthe slit-shaped opening in the distributor and leaves the latter at a pressure controlled by the pump, either directly or afterthe incorporation of pressu regulating elements.Independently ofthe viscosity value, the coating material can thereby be forced even through finely regulated, slit-shaped openings and this makes possible the production of an exact coating both in the region ofthe bottom and in the region of the sides and top.
Further features of the invention will become apparentfromthefollowing description of example of apparatus according to the invention which will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa schematic elevation; and
Figure 2 is a partly cut-away, perspective view of a distributorforming part of the apparatus.
An apparatus 1 for the coating of confectionery articles 2 with cocoa-containing, temperature controlled, flowable material 3 comprises a storage vessel 10, serving also as a collecting point, having a supply line
5 and also drain plates 6. A line 11 connects the
storage vessel 10 with a feed pump 12, to the delivery
side of which a coating device 9 is connected by lines
13. An endless lattice conveyor 7 for the confectionery
articles 2 runs at a predetermined level and with its
horizontal conveying rim 8 above the drain plates 6
and storage vessel 10 and conveys the confectionery
articles through the coating device 9.
The lines 13 terminate at respective distributor flanges 14, from each of which feed lines 16 lead to distributors 17, which are disposed above and below the horizontal conveying path 8 and serve for producing the top and side coating and the bottom coating
respectively.
Regulating elements 18forflow regulation are incorporated in the feed lines 16, in orderthat line resistances due to different lengths of hose or other influences can be equalised.
For producing the bottom coating, the distributor 17 disposed below the horizontal conveying path 8 is oriented with a slit-shaped opening 19 directed upwardly towards the conveyor 7. Above the lattice conveyor7, there are two distributors which are oriented with their slit-shaped openings 19 both towards each other and alsotowardsthe conveyor7 and thus onto the confectionery articles 2 to be coated.
Details ofthe distributors 17, which are of identical construction but arranged in different orientations in the coating device 9, are seen in Figure 2.
Each distributor 17 is in the form of a closed vessel, being box-shaped in the example iilustrated and the interior 20 is connected via openings or connections 21 with thefeed lines 16. The coating material in the distributor 17 can emerge only through the slit-shaped opening 19, the width of which is adjustable by means of a sliding plate 22. Atthe outlet side, a guide 23 adjoins the slit-shaped opening 19,this guide forming the bottom wall when the distributor 17 is disposed below the horizontal conveying path 8 and controlling the outlet direction of the resultant curtain of material 24when the distributor 17 is situated above the confectionery articles 2.
When the distributors 17 are box-shaped, as illustrated, the control surface 25 of each guide 23 is inclined to the edge ofthe respective distributor 17 and issoarrangedthatthetwocurtains24flow obliquely towards each other and to the confectionery articles 2.
The interior 20 ofthe distributor 17 includes a heating pipe 26, through which a heating liquid can be passed when required. The adjustment of the sliding plate 22 which controlsthewidth ofthe opening 19 is provided by a toothed wheel 27, mounted on a shaft 28 which is adjustable by means of a handle 29.
During operation, the feed pump 12 forces the coating material 3 as far as the slit-shaped openings 19 in the distributors 17 and thus ensures a reliable discharge and curtain formation independently of the viscosity. Furthermore it is particularly advantageous that the distr:butor 17 can be used both forforming the curtain 24 ana also for forming tie bottom wall which simplifies both manufacture and also maintenance of stocks.
Itwill be understood t. hat the invention is not limited to the examni illustrated in the drawings, since numerous modifications are possible without departing from the basic concept of the invention. Thus for example, it is possible to heat the feed lines 16, in orderto assure a specifictemperature ofthe material 3 flowing through them. Furthermore, the sliding plate 22 may be adjustable in a different manner from that described above and illustrated in Figure 2. Moreover, the shape and construction of the distributor 17 can be varied as required.
