Description
SPECIFICATION
A support assembly for insulation and facing plaster
The present invention relates to an assembly to be used on insulation of walls to support the insulation material and facing plaster, comprising a supporting member adapted to be fastened to the wall so as to project substantially at right angles therefrom to extend through and support an insulation mounted thereon, and engaging means adapted to be mounted on the supporting member on the outside of the insulation to retain the insulation thereto and to engage and support the facing plaster disposed on the outside of the insulation.
When a wall is to be provided with additional insulation, a plurality of bracket elements each having a supporting member are fastened to the wall in such a way that each supporting member projects at right angles from the wall. Then a layer of insulation is disposed on the wall, the supporting members being introduced into the insulation layer. An outer end portion of each supporting member extends from the insulation layer. Engaging means in the form of a net is arranged on the outer end portions of the supporting members on the outside of the insulation layer to be supported by the supporting members. The net is fastened to the supporting members by special fasteners, such as cotters. Finally, facing plaster is sprayed over the net to suitable thickness, the net being thereby embedded in the plaster to support it.
The work required for mounting a plaster net, as mentioned above, over an entire wall which has been provided with additional insulation and on which facing plaster shall be applied, is complicated and extremely time consuming. There is therefore a great demand for a simple and readily handled assembly for supporting additional insulation and facing plaster. This demand is particularly pronounced when new, more light-weight facing plaster materials are used, such as fiber plaster of various types. When passing from conventional facing plaster materials to new materials containing fibres, the weight of the facing plaster can be reduced from about 65 kg/m2 to about 1 5 kg/m2, which makes it possible to use simpler and more readily handled assemblies for supporting the insulation and facing plaster.
The object of the present invention therefore is to provide a simple and readily handled assembly for supporting the insulation and the facing plaster, particularly light-weight facing plaster containing fibres, said assembly besides being capable of taking up movements caused by tensions in the facing plaster and thus considerably reducing the risk of cracks forming therein. Such movements may be caused for instance by self-shrinkage of the material and by tensions by reason of moisture and temperature variations.
This object is achieved with an assembly of the type outlined in the foregoing and which is characterised according to the present invention in that the supporting member is so designed as to be somewhat resilient in two directions which are at right angles to each other and perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the supporting member in order to take up movements in the facing plaster parallel to the wall, and in that the engaging means has a hole in which the supporting member is to be inserted when the engaging means is mounted thereon, an abutment surface which is adapted to bear against insulation, and projections engaging the facing plaster which are substantially parallel with the abutment surface and spaced such a distance therefrom that a gap into which facing plaster can penetrate when it is applied to the insulation, remains free between each projection and the insulation when the abutment surface bears against said insulation.
The supporting member is preferably in the form of a strip and the outer end thereof is twisted through 90= in relation to the inner end thereof to provide resilience in said two directions at right angles to each other.
In a preferred embodiment the engaging means has a central part through which the hole extends and on which the abutment surface is formed, the projections extending radially outward from said central part. In this instance the hole of the engaging means is of a shape corresponding to the cross section of the supporting member and the supporting member in the vicinity of its outer end has a portion of reduced cross section, where the engaging means is rotatable on the supporting member to a locking position in which it is immovable longitudinally of the supporting member. This portion of reduced cross section is preferably so dimensioned that the engaging means is slightly rockable about axes perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the supporting member.
The engaging means preferably has means adapted to cooperate with the supporting member to prevent rotation of the engaging means on the supporting member in the locking position.
The invention will be more fully described in the following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of an assembly according to the present invention in position on a wall to support the insulation and facing plaster, an engaging means of the assembly being shown in section on line I-I in Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a side view of a bracket element of the assembly;
Figure 3 is a view of the engaging means as seen from the wall side, that is from the left in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a view of the engaging means as seen from the outer side, that is from the right in Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a magnified cross sectional view taken on line V-V in Figure 4.
The assembly illustrated in the drawings comprises a bracket element 1 provided with a short vertical fixation flange 2 and a long horizontal supporting member 3, and a starshaped engaging means 4 disposed on the supporting member 3 at the outer end thereof. The bracket element 1 is fastened, as shown in Figure 1, to a wall 5 by means of a screw 6 extending through the fixation flange 2 into the wall 5. The supporting member 3 extends through an insulation layer 7, the outer end thereof reaching into a facing plaster layer 8 in which the engaging means 4 is embedded.
In the preferred embodiment illustrated the bracket element 1 is in a form of a strip and made of steel. The supporting member 3 in the vicinity of the fixation flange 2 is twisted through 90" so that the strip portion thereof closest to the fixation flange 2 is horizontal while the strip portion situated outside said firstmentioned portion is vertical. In this way the supporting member 3 is slighly resilient both vertically and horizontally to take up movements in the facing plaster 8 which are parallel to the wall 5. In the vicinity of its outer end the supporting member 3 has a portion 9 of reduced cross section, which has been brought about by making an upper notch 10 and an opposed lower notch 11 in the strip material.The supporting member end portion 1 2 defined by the notches 10, 11 is of rounded shape in order that the support ing member 3 shall penetrate the insulation layer 7 more easily when said layer is applied to the wall 5.
The star-shaped engaging means 4 which is preferably made in an integral piece of plastic, has a circular cup-shaped central portion 1 3 the outer bottom surface 14 of which constitutes an engagement surface for application against the insulation layer 7. In the bottom of the central portion 1 3 there is formed a central hole 1 5 in which the outer end of the supporting member 3 is to be introduced. The hole 1 5 therefore has a shape corresponding to the cross section of the supporting member 3.In addition, the hole 1 5 at its centre has a circular enlargement 1 6 whose diameter is so large that it allows rotation of the engaging means 4 on the supporting member 3 when the bottom wall of the central portion 1 3 is situated opposite the portion 9 of the supporting member 3 having reduced cross section.
When the engaging means 4 has been rotated from its position in which it can be mounted onto the supporting member 3, that is from a position in which the hole 1 5 extends vertically, the engaging means is retained at the portion 9 immovably in the longitudinal direction of the supporting member 3.
In an alternative embodiment a pair of parallel ribs 17, indicated in Figure 4 by dash and dot lines, may be provided on the inner bottom surface 1 8 of the central portion 1 3 on either side of the hole 15, said ribs extending at right angles to the extension of-the hole 1 5. Having been turned through 90 at the portion 9 once it has been mounted on the supporting member 3, the engaging means 4 is pressed slightly back outwardly along the supporting member 3 by the somewhat resilient insulation layer 7 so that the end portion 1 2 of the supporting member is inserted between the ribs 1 7 of the two pairs of ribs.
The four ribs 1 7 thus define a rotation fixing position in which the engaging means 4 cannot be rotated relative to the supporting member 3 unless it is first pressed slightly inwards against the insulation layer 7. In this alternative embodiment the width of the notches 10, 11 must, in order to permit this short shifting of the engaging means 4 along the supporting member 3, be somewhat greater than the thickness of the bottom wall of the central portion 1 3.
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawings the inner bottom surface 18 of the central portion 1 3 is devoid of ribs and instead carries, as shown in Figure 1, a wearing washer 1 9 the outer diameter of which is equal to the inner diameter of the central portion 1 3 and which has a central hole 20 of the same shape as that of the hole 1 5 and situated opposite said hole. To provide locking of the assembly against rotation it is thus not necessary to shift the engaging means 4 along the supporting member 3 in the embodiment illustrated, since it is devoid of ribs.
The bottom wall and the wearing washer 1 9 of the central portion 1 3 together are of a thickness equal to the smallest width of the notches 10, 11. As shown in Figure 2, the notches 10 and 11 have a vertical front edge 1 Oa and 11 a, respectively, and a rearwardly inclined rear edge 1 Ob and 11 b, respectively.
By the inclination of the rear edge lOb, 1 b it is possible to bend or rock the engaging means 4 somewhat about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the supporting member 3. If desired, the front edge 1 Oa, 11 a can also be inclined to permit a greater degree of bending or rocking. Some rocking of the engaging means 4 about a vertical axis perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the supporting member 3 is possible as the supporting member 3 is stripshaped.
From the circumference of the cup-shaped central portion 1 3 there extend eight radial arms 21. At its open part the cup-shaped central portion 1 3 has an annular circular flange 22 with radial projections 23 situated opposite the arms 21 and substantially paral lel to the abutment surface 14 and spaced from said surface a distance determined by the cross sectional height of the arms 21 (see
Figure 5). The star apices formed by the arms 21 and projections 23 are of T-shape in cross section, whereby a gap into which facing plaster can penetrate when applied to the insulation, remains free between each projection 23 and the insulation 7. As only shown for one projection in Figure 4 and 5, the projections 23 may present along their sides a series of studs 24 which improve the engagement of the projections 23 with the facing plaster 8. To further improve this engagement the projections 23 may also present studs (not shown) protruding from their upper and lower surfaces.
It will appear from the above description that the assembly according to the invention has an inherent mobility, which implies that it is capable of taking up movements in the facing plaster, thereby reducing the risk of crack formation. Thus, the supporting member 3 because of its 90" twist is resilient both vertically and horizontally, and the engagement means 4 because of the described configuration of the edges of the notches 10, 11 and as a result of the strip-shape of the supporting member 3 is rockable both about a horizontal and a vertical axis.
