Abstract
The device comprises a slightly conical plate portion 1 formed with a material-engaging frustoconical rim 9. Extending transversely from the plate portion 1 is a channel portion 2 connected to the plate portion by strengthening ribs. The plate portion has a central opening which extends to the edge of the plate to form a segmental opening which enables the device to be engaged over a wall tie which fits in the space within the channel 3. The bringing together of the flanges 4 which are connected to the channel portion 2, and the fixing together thereof, causes the channel portion 2 to close and fixedly engage with a said wall tie so that plate portion 1 urges the sheet of insulating material against the interior surface of the inner wall of the cavity wall. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for securing insulating material in a cavity wall
This invention relates to devices for securing insulating material in a cavity wall of the kind comprising a substantially flat plate portion formed with a substantially central opening and having gripping means for fixedly engaging the device on a wall tie.
A device of the kind mentioned is known which is in the form of a disc having a central aperture with a plurality of slots radiating therefrom. The application of such a device around a wall tie is difficult and time consuming and has the additional drawback that is the event of insufficient hardening of the mortar in the wall, the wall ties can become detached.
It is an object of the invention to overcome or at least substantially reduce these drawbacks by providing according to the invention a device of the kind mentioned in which said opening extends to an edge of the plate portion and said gripping means comprises a channel portion extending transversely from the plate portion and facing said opening and provided with locking means whereby said channel portion may be substantially closably engaged about a wall tie for mounting thereon. This makes for a simple and rapid fixing of the device on a wall tie, which does not impose undue loads thereon. The device is engaged over the wall tie by presenting its opening thereto, the channel portion then receives the tie and is then substantially closed therearound and held in that position by said locking means. The device is preferably made of polypropylene, this material having the necessary properties of sufficient rigidity, elasticity and durability for the purpose.
The locking means may take any of a number of forms consistent with its purpose. In one preferred embodiment the locking means comprises a pair of flanges, each attached to or integral with a respective edge of the channel portion and provided with cooperating catch means whereby the flanges may be rigidly connected together to substantially close the channel portion. Thus the device once slipped over a wall tie may be pushed therealong to engage the insulating material and press it against an inner surface of the wall, whereupon the flanges may be lockingly engaged together to fix the device in place, the whole operation exerting no appreciable removing force on the wall tie.
The catch means may consist of matingly engaging means formed on facing surfaces of the flanges. For example a shaped member protruding from one surface may be embracingly and lockingly received in a corresponding recess formed in the other said surface. Preferably the said member and recess extend axially along said flanges over at least a substantial part of the length thereof.
A further preferred form of the catch means consists of one or more hook-like members formed along the free edge of one said flange and adapted to hookingly locate about the free edge of the other said flange.
The loss of strength brought about by extending the central opening to an edge of the plate portion may be compensated for by making the plate portion sliahly conical in shape, having an included angle of preferably 1600 to 1750, and preferably making the opening segmental in shape. To engage the insulating material, e.g.
glass fibre or rock wool sheeting, firmly the peripheral edge of the plate portion may be formed with a frustoconical rim of a smaller included angle than the plate portion itself, for example substantially 900, directed oppositely from the channel portion.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, certain embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view, along line I-I of Fig. 2 of a device according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking along the arrow II in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along line Ill-Ill in
Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a scrap sectional view showing an alternative embodiment of the channel flange arrangement.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show a device for securing insulating material in a cavity wall, consisting of a plate portion 1 and a transversely extending channel portion 2 adapted to engage about a wall tie in said cavity wall.
The plate portion 1 is not exactly flat, but is formed slightly conical with an included angle of some 1600 to 1750. Around its periphery is formed a frusto-conical rim 9 which is adapted to engage the insulating material to press it firmly against an inner surface of the cavity wall.
It will be seen that the plate portion 1 has a segmental shaped opening extending from the rim 9 to a substantially central opening 3. The channel portion 2 is of substantially U-shaped section, the free space within the channel portion registering with the opening 3 formed in the plate portion. Reinforcing ribs 10 connect the channel portion 2 firmly to the plate portion 1.
To the edges of the channel portion 2 are integrally attached flanges 4 which are adapted to be brought together to substantially close the channel portion 3. The transverse dimension dis arranged to substantially correspond with a wall tie, so that closure together of the two flanges when a wall tie is situated in the channel 2 will cause the device to be securely mounted on the wall tie. The connection of the two flanges together is brought about by a shaped protruding portion 6 formed on one of the flanges, and a corresponding recess 7 formed in the other flange adapted to matingly and embracingly receive the member 6. It will be noted that the cavity 7 extends axially throughout the length of the flange 4, and the protruding member 6 also has a considerable axial extent.
Operation of the device will now be understood. Firstly the insulating material is introduced into the cavity wall and arranged against the interior surface of the inner wall. The securing device as shown in Fig. 1 is then slipped over a wall tie, and pushed along it until the insulating material is firmly gripped between the device and the wall. Hereupon the two flanges are urged together so that the catch means in the form of member 6 and recess 7 engage, to lock the device firmly on the wall tie. This operation can be carried out without any excessive force being applied to the wall tie, so that if the wall mortar has not yet sufficiently hardened, the wall tie nevertheless remains in place.
A further embodiment of the flanges as shown in Fig. 4, in which a hook-like member 8 is provided along the outer edge of one of the flanges, this projection being arranged to engage about the outer edge of the opposing flange whereby the two flanges may be lockingly engaged together.
