Description

SPECIFICATION Shoe with a preformed sole and upper attached together by sewing The present invention relates to a shoe of the type having a preformed sole of plastics material and a preformed upper which are attached together by sewing. The sole has an upper border provided with a plurality of holes which is inclined downwards and outwards and is provided at the perimeter with an embossed rim which is perforated by vertical holes. The upper has holes around its perimeter corresponding to those made in the edge of the sole, and thread or twine is passed through the holes in the sole and upper to sew the said two components together so that the shoe is finished and ready immediately after sewing.
Footwear, in particular shoes, comprising a preshaped sole of plastics material such as, for example, polyurethane, and an upper secured to the said sole are already known.
According to a known method of manufacture the assembly of such shoes requires in succession: securing the upper on an insole and placing it on a last, the so-called carding or scraping of the edge of the upper attached to the insole to prepare it for the adhesive, securing the sole to the insole by means of adhesive, pressing the whole together to ensure that the adhesive bonds and removal of the shoe from the last. Finishing operations then follow.
It is, however, obvious that the assembly of shoes in this manner is rather slow and laborious, requiring the provision of special tools and involving considerable manual labour with a consequent adverse effect on production times and costs.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a shoe with a preformed sole and upper which is simple, quick and cheap to assemble by sewing without the need for costly and specialised equipment, merely by passing a thread or twine through holes provided in the two components.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shoe which is immediately ready, in that it is finished and ready for use immediately after the upper has been sewn to the sole.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shoe with a sole having on its upper side an edge which is shaped to assist the operation of sewing the sole to the upper and to prevent the seepage of water into the shoe along the plane of the join between the sole and upper.
According to the invention there is provided a shoe with a preformed sole and upper attached together by sewing, wherein the sole has an upper peripheral edge which is inclined downwardly and outwardly and wherein said edge is provided with a plurality of holes and is associated, peripherally, with an outwardly projecting embossed rim through which the said holes pass; wherein the upper has through holes in its peripheral edge region which correspond with the holes in the sole, and wherein a thread or twine passes through the corresponding holes in the sole and upper attaching the two components together so that the shoe is thus finished and immediately ready following the sewing together of the two components.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a separate sole and upper respectively.
Figure 3 is an enlarged partial transverse crosssection of the sole of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating an assembled shoe; and Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view and partial cross-section of the shoe.
A preformed sole 1 is illustrated in general which is with or without an internal insole or arch-support 2. A preferred upper 3 is illustrated in Figure 4 which is to be attached to the sole to form a shoe 4 1 as illustrated by way of example in Figure 4.
The sole 1, which is pressed from plastics material, such as polyurethane, for example, has on its upper side a peripheral border or edge 6 and an upper plane 7 having a flat or concave surface when viewed in cross-section, but in any event being inclined downwards and outwards towards the outside of the sole as shown in particular in Figure 3. Around the upper peripheral edge of the sole, edge 6 is included or is formed together with an embossed rim 8 which projects laterally and outwardly and, in the example illustrated, is bounded on the underside by a groove 9 pressed into the sole below the said upper edge 6. Suitably spaced holes 10 are provided in the inclined plane 7 of the edge 6 in a suitable manner, passing in a vertical or approximately vertical direction through rim 8 and opening into upper parts of groove 9.In this way the holes 10 are accessible from inclined plane 7 or from beneath rim 8.
In turn, shoe upper 3 is preformed or shaped from hide or other appropriate material and is provided along its edge 14 with through holes 11 which are disposed to coincide with those provided in the upper edge 6 of sole 1 when the upper 3 is aligned.
In order to assemble the shoe from the sole and upper prepared as above, all that is required is to pass twine or thread 13 through the corresponding holes 10-11 of the two superimposed components in order to tightly bind them together.
Assembly of the shoe is therefore easy, simple and rapid for anyone because the holes 10-11 are already provided in the two components and accessible from both above and beneath and below the embossed rim 8 when sewing.
Once assembled, the edge of upper 3 is firmly seated on the inclined plane 7 of upper edge 6 of the sole, a border which being inclined downwards and outwards drains off any water properly and acting as a drip former prevents undesirable seepage of water into the shoe through the plane of the sewn joint between the sole and the upper.
The shoe is therefore finished and ready for use immediately after sewing and therefore without any need for further treatment.
