Description

This invention relates to the manufacture of footwear and more particularly to boots and shoes.
According to this invention a method of making an article of footwear comprises the step of seaming the lower edge of an upper to a sock, then sliplasting the upper, adhesively securing the sock and the parts of the lasted upper adjoining the sock to a moulded sole unit which provides an upstanding flange about the periphery of the unit, and stitching the upper so said flange.
The invention also provides an article of footwear comprising an upper which has its lower edge seamed to a sock and has been slip-lasted, and a sole unit to which the sock and the parts of the upper adjoining the sock are adhesively secured, the sole unit having an upstanding flange about its periphery to which flange the upper is sewn.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference by way of example to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a shoe according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a sectional view on a plane normal to the lengthwise dimension of the shoe of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings a closed upper 10 has its lower or lasting edge 11 seamed to the periphery of a sock 12 made from a suitable fabric. The upper is then sliplasted, i.e. a last is forced into the foot cavity formed by the upper and sock 12. Subsequently the sock and the parts of the lasted upper adjoining the sock are secured by an adhesive to the upper surface of a moulded sole unit 13 which has an upstanding flange 14 extending along the full - 2 48148 length of Its periphery. Finally the flange is secured to the upper by stitching 15, which may be decorative stitching. An inner sock 16, made for example from leather, is then preferably adhesively secured within the shoe.
An extremely comfortable and strong shoe has been found to result from this mode of construction.

2. An article of footwear comprising an upper which 10 has its lower edge seamed to a sock and has been sliplasted, and a sole unit to which the sock and the parts of the upper adjoining the sock are adhesively secured, the sole having an upstanding flange about its periphery to which flange the upper is sewn. 15
3. An article of footwear substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
