Description

This invention relates to the manufacture of footwear.
According to this invention there is provided an article of footwear including an upper and an insole, the upper being secured to the insole by califomian closed stitched side seams along the two sides of the article and by being inlasted and secured to the underside of the insole in the toe and heel end portions of the article.
The invention also provides a method of making an article of footwear Including the steps of attaching the upper of the article to an insole by stitching the upper to the insole along the two sides of the article to form californian closed side seams, forcing the assembled upper and insole on to a last, and then inlasting the toe and heel portions of the upper to the insole.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference by way of example to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows, the underside of an assembled upper and insole of a shoe according to the invention, and indicates the zones in which two kinds of - 2 46854 lasting extend, and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings a closed shoe upper 10 is made from leather and is secured to a leather insole 11. In the zones A along the two sides of the shoe between the heel and toe, the bottom edges 12 of the upper are then sewn to the down-turned edges of the insole in califomian closed seams as shown in Figure 2 and the assembly is then forced on to a last. The toe and heel areas 13, 14 of che upper are then conventionally inlasted, being stretched and drawn under the insole and cemented to the underside of the insole. It will be understood that the upper is required to have a greater lasting allowance in the heel and toe regions than along the sides.
Subsequently the assembled upper and insole has a sole unit moulded on to it or has a preformed Sole unit cemented to it.
In the result, an extremely soft and flexible construction is achieved in which the foot is encased in leather. The construction has a particularly useful but not exclusive application in some versions of the articles of footwear claimed in Patent Specification No. 43178. - 3 46854
