Abstract

653,050. Platform shoes. MALING, R Dec. 30, 1948, No. 33525. Convention date, March 6. [Class 17(ii)] A platform shoe has a wedge heel with a flat lower surface curved at the heel part upwardly and rearwardly to spread the line of initial contact of the heel with the ground to give a rolling engagement and reduced wear. A flexible platform cover 20, Fig. 4, has a rear tab 28 and rearwardly extending wing portions 30 having curved edges 30<SP>1</SP> which follow the curve of the tab when. the wings are bent round and their ends abutted and stitched together. The tread element may be in two parts 32, 34 of different materials, the latter having greater wear resistance, the parts being joined by a lapped joint 36 having a rearwardly extending tongue 35. The part 32 and the lapped portion of the part 34 are stitched at 38 to the cover 20 and then the tongue 35 is stitched at 40 to the abutted and joined wing parts 30 of the cover 20 along the line 42, the stitches extending forwardly along the line 44. Punched holes 46 coincide with the end holes 22 of the wing parts 30. The upper 10, Fig. 1, may be lasted to an insole or fence-lasted and has a welt strip 16 which is attached to the cover 20 after a flexible platform of cork or other material has been inserted, by lacing 26 or by other means. The cover is preferably stuck to the underside of the platform and the insole or sock to the upper side. In a modified form, the cover extends over the under margin only of the platform.
