Abstract

Depilatory preparations are described which are prepared by first heating and then cooling and working a sugar composition to give a soft putty-like material. The sugar composition is preferably based on invert sugar or honey. The composition may also contain citric acid and/or gum arabic.

Description

SPECIFICATION Depilatory preparation This invention relates to a depilatory preparation and a method of depilation using the preparation.
Many differenttypes of depilatory preparation have been suggested in the past but commercial formulations have usually been based on waxes such as beeswax.
The depilatory preparations of the invention are based on sugar compositions and are prepared by heating the sugar compositions (e.g. to 130 to 1 500C, preferably 140 C) to form a liquid, which is usually light brown in colour. The liquid is then allowed to cool and thicken, and it is then worked (preferably by pulling and folding) until the material has a soft putty-like consistency. At this stage the material usuallytakes on a golden coiour.
Thesugarcompositionsusedto preparethedepila- tory preparations are generally based on invertsugar, sucrose or glucose or mixtures thereof together with water (e.g. upto 20% by weight) and if desired additives such as citric acid and/or gum arabic, usually in amounts of up to 5% byweight Sugar compositions containing invert sugar are generally preferred. The invert sugar can beconven- tional invert sugar ("golden syrup"), a natural product such as honey containing substantial amounts of invert sugar, orsynthetic invertsugarpreparedfor example by isomerisation ofglucose-syrups. Invert sugars of these types and particularly conventional invert or honey or mixtures thereof-- can be used as the basic sugar composition in preparing the depilatory compositionswithout additional water, and if desired without additives such as citric acid or gum arabic.
Mixtures of invert sugar and sucrose glucose may also be used, for example containing 2040% invert and 6080% sucrose or glucose, either in the absence of added water or in the presence of up to 15% water (by weight).
Sugar compositions based on sucrose and/or glucose containing upto 20% (e.g. 10-18%) water may also be used, again if desired together with citric acid and/orgum arabic.
Examples of sugarcompositions useful in the invention are (parts and percentages byweight): 1. Honey (100%) 2. Conventional invert sugar (75%) Honey (25%) 3. Sucrose-3 parts Honey-1 part Gum arabic4% (onthetotal sucrose and honey) 4. Sucrose-6parts Honey-2 parts Water--1 part Citric Acid4% (as lemon juice, % based on the total ofthe other ingredients).
5. Sucrose-6 parts Water 1 part 6. Sucrose-6 parts Water-1 part Citric Acid -4% (as lemon juice, based on the total sucrose/water) when citric acid is included in the sugar composition, it is preferably used in theform of lemon juice The method of depilation using the depilatory preparation according to the invention comprises applying the preparation when of said soft consistencyto an area of skin requiring hair removal and then pulling the preparation from the skin. The hairs adhere to the preparation and are consequentially pulled from the skin when the preparation is pulled off. The hairtakesaboutonemonthto regrowonsucha treated area.In accordance with the invention, the provision of honey or other invert sugars, in the preparation is particularly important as it leaves the skin in a smooth and soft condition. The lemon juice also contributes to the effect. The preparation can also be appiied more easily and convenientlythan isthe case with conventional wax preparations, which are less viscous and require a retaining backing sheet. The preparation can be used safely on broken skin, and as it is water soluble, traces can easily be removed from the skin after treatment.
For marketing purposes, the preparation maybe packaged in a sealed plastics bag. For use, the bag is immersed, unopened, in hotwateruntil soft and malleable. The bag is then removed from the water, opened, the preparation issmooted overan area of skin to be treated and is thereafter immediately removed to effect depilation. Alternatively, the preparation can be removed from the container before being softened in water.
The preparation is made from natural compounds and does not require testing on animals. Accordingly, the preparation is suitable for use by persons with ethical objections to such animal testing.
