The channel (4) has a substantially rectangular cross-section with corner fillets (5) and is connected at its upstream end to a coaxially feed channel (6) from a first plastics worm extruder, and at least one entry channel (7) connected to another plastics worm extruder is disposed downstream of the feed channel (6) and extends over one side (15) of the channel (4). A flow control pin (10) is rotatably disposed in a cylindrical hole (9) opening in to the path of the entry channel (7), and projects into and extends across the entry channel, and has a variable profile (Fig. 3 not shown) around its periphery so that the entry channel section (7) can be adjusted upon rotation of the pin (14). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Equipment for continuous extrusion of laminated plastic ribbon This invention relates to equipment for continuous extrusion of laminated plastics ribbon with the aid of at least two plastics worm extruders, a collecting block, a reforming unit, and a wide-slit nozzle through which the laminated plastics ribbon emerges, the collecting block having a composing channel to which the plastics worm extruders are connected and which is connected through the reforming unit to the wide-slit nozzle. The term "collecting block" expresses the fact that two or more thermoplasticised plastics streams are brought together in the block and united layer on layer in the composing channel. The arrangement and general layout are such that the plurality of layers of thermoplasticised plastics material do not comingle on their way to the wide-slit nozzle. In other words, the reforming unit brings the plurality of streams initially entering the composing channel into a single stream of thermoplasticised plastics material of the form required in the plastics ribbon emerging from the wide-slit nozzle. The term "plastics ribbon" covers foil-like and slablike plastics formations.
In known equipment (DE-AS 1 5 04 1 90), the composing channel lies between two feed channels. It leads into a wide-slit nozzle which extends over the length of the composing channel and forms as it were the entrance to the reforming unit to which the wide-slit nozzle first mentioned is connected. The two feed channels are oriented at right angles one to the other. In the first place, this is technologically complicated, and secondly it is not free from disadvantages, in that the thicknesses of the plastics layers cannot be directly controlled. More particularly, there are no means of adjustment for the individual thermoplasticised stream or streams which are to be laid one on another. This adjustment is important when plastics ribbons are to be made with individual layers of a readily adjustable thickness which moreover remains constant, within minor tolerances, over the entire breadth of the plastics ribbon.
The object of the invention is to provide equipment for continuous extrusion of laiminated plastics ribbon with which there is no need for a wide-slit ribbon running parallel to the composing channel and feeding the reforming unit, and with which the individual layer thicknesses are adjustable. The term adjustment covers control in respect of both thickness and the correction of thickness errors.
According to the present invention, the composing channel has a substantially rectangular cross-section with corner fillets, and is connected at one end to a coaxially mounted feed channel from a first plastics worm extruder and at the other end to the reforming unit, at least one entry channel connected to another plastics worm extruder and at the other end to the reforming unit, at least one entry channel connected to another plastics worm extruder is disposed downstream of the feed channel and extends over one side of the rectangular composing channel cross-section into which it opens, and a control pin is disposed rotatably in a cylinderical hole opening into the path of the entry channel so that the control pin projects into the entry channel, and the control pin has a variable profile round its periphery so that the entry channel section can be adjusted. The entry channel preferably extends over the breadth of one long side of the composing channel crosssection. To enable the equipment to be adaptable for a variety of plastics materials, it is preferred to provide a plurality of control pins to fit the cylindrical hole interchangeablyFa-nd having different profiles round their peripheries for effecting the entry channel section adjustments.
The accrucing advantages are to be seen first in that by adjusting the control pin in the equipment of the invention one can vary the thickness of the plastics layer laid over the primary plastics stream fed into the composing channel. A further achievement is that the different layers in the finished plastics ribbon can be given the same thickness throughout, for example by setting the control pin to increase or reduce the thicknesses at the edges compared with the middle regions. A special advantage of the preferred feature is the ease with which the control pins can be interchanged so as to adapt the equipment of the invention for the widest variety of extrusion requirements. The features specified can be provided in any number, one beyond another and at different parts of the composing channel.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of equipment in accordance with the invention, parts of the collecting block being sectioned axially; Figure 2 is a part-sectional elevation taken from the line A-A of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end elevation and four different side elevations of a control pin from the equipment of Figures 1 and 2.
The equipment shown in the Figures is intended for continuous extrusion of laminated plastics ribbon with the aid of at least two plastics worm extruders (not shown). The equipment has a collecting block 1, a reforming unit 2 downstream of the collecting block 1, and a wide-slit nozzle 3 through which the laminated plastics ribbon emerges. The collecting block 1 has a composing channel 4 to which the plastics worm extruders are connected. The composing channel 4 is connected through the reforming unit 2 to the wide-slit nozzle 3.
It will be seen from Figures 1 and 2 that the composing channel 4 has a substantially rectangular cross-section with corner fillets 5 and that this composing channel 4 is connected at one end to a coaxially mounted feed channel 6 from the first plastics worm extruder and at the other end to the reforming unit 2. Downstream of the feed channel 6, and in fact in the embodiment shown, at the junction between the feed channel 6 and the composing channel 4, there are disposed two entry channels 7 connected to two other plastics worm extruders (not shown) by channels 8.
These entry channels 7 extend over one long side 15 each of the rectangular composing channel cross-section and open into it. A control pin 10 is disposed rotatably in a cylindrical hole 9 opening into the path of each entry channel 7 and the control pin projects into the adjacent entry channel 7 to a different extent depending on its setting, or lies clear of the channel, because its periphery is variably profiled to adjust the section (B) of the entry channel 7. This feature is clarified by Figure 3, which shows different profiles 11, 12, 13 and 14. It is self evident that as the equipment is provided with a plurality of control pins 10, which can be interchanged and which have different profiles round their peripheries, it is capable of adaptation to different operating conditions.
