Abstract

A device for handling sheet material comprises one to three support bars 20, 21, 22 for supporting rolls of material, the bars being mounted in a carrier 10 which is provided with means 11, 12 for fixing it to a table so that the material can be drawn off the rolls on to the table and cut to length. A knife guide slot (33) and anvil 15 may also be provided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for handling sheet material This invention relates to a device for facilitating the handling of sheet material and especially but not exclusively for handling wall paper in the course of a wall papering operation.
It is a common experience that rolls of wallpaper are difficult to handle when measuring and cutting off lengths of paper to be applied to a wall and the roll is often placed on a chair or on the floor and is generally inconvenient.
According to the present invention a paper-roll support bar is mounted on a carrier and the carrier is provided with means for fixing it to a table so that paper can be drawn off the roll on to the table and cut to length.
Preferably two support bars are provided so that lengths can be drawn off from two rolls one upon the other to facilitate matching the pattern of one sheet with the pattern of another sheet to be applied next to the first sheet.
If desired three support bars may be provided to facilitate the carrying of up to three paper rolls which are removable so that the middle one can be removed when large diameter paper rolls are used.
The carrier may also be provided with a cutting ruler which is movable on to and away from the table. The ruler may also act as a retaining weight to prevent the cut lengths rolling onto the table whilst pasting takes place.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device made in accordance with the invention; and Figures 2 and 3 are views of details to be described.
The device comprises a frame 10 to which two bracket type clamps 11, 12 are fixed which have screws 13, 14 whereby the frame can be removably attached to a table 17. The frame may also be provided with supporting legs. The clamps are connected together by an anvil plate 15.
Upstanding from each of the side bars of the frame 10 are three columns 18, 19 the upper ends of which carry three support rods 20, 21, 22 in a common horizontal plane. Each rod has a spring pressed captive pin 25 at one end so that the rod can be removed and a roll of paper placed on it and replaced. When using normal thin papers only two support rods need be used but if thick papers are used the rolls may have large diameters in which case the middle rod 21 is removed and two rolls are placed on the rods 20, 22. The rods also carry discs 27, 28 which act as retaining guides for the paper rolls, the first of which is removable while the other may be fixed.
Pivotally mounted in the side bars of the frame 10 are two bars 30, 31 which carry a knife guide ruler 32 which has a knife guide slot 33. The bars can be pivoted into a position away from the table and rolls and rest on stops 36, 37.
In use two sheets will be drawn off the rolls one upon the other over the anvil plate 15 and their patterns matched and any unwanted piece cut off.
The two wanted strips are then cut off to length together with the aid of the knife guide ruler. Further successive pairs of sheets are similarly drawn off and will be in matched condition.
1. A device for handling sheet material comprising a support bar for supporting a coll of sheet material, said bar being mounted on a carrier which is provided with means for fixing it to a table so that the material can be drawn off the roll on to the table and cut to length.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein two such support bars are mounted on the carrier parallel to each other so that two lengths of material can be drawn off from two rolls one upon the other to facilitate matching the pattern of one sheet with the pattern of the other.
3. A device as claimed in claim 2 wherein a third such support bar is mounted on the carrier, all three bars being parallel to each other and being readily removable and replaceable.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein a cutting ruler is provided on the carrier and is movable on to and away from the table.
5. A device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein said means are screw clamps.
6. A device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein roll locating plate means are provided at each end of the rolls.
7. A device for handling sheet material substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
