Abstract

215,264. Gettings, S. S., and Bodman, W. L. Oct. 5, 1923. Stationary batch-mixers with rotary stirrers.- A machine for mixing molten bitumen with sand &c. comprises a pan in which scraping blades are rotated round a vertical axis, the pan being heated by flue gases led to a chamber beneath the pan and passing upwards through a hollow centre piece. The pan a is supported on beams a<2> and is provided with a bottom b which slopes downwards and outwards and has a central aperture b<1> leading to a rotating part d carried in a cross member e. The rotating part d has a transverse hole d<1> through which a beam h passes, scrapers i being carried thereon by angle irons i<1>; additional scrapers i<2> are carried by the part d. The flue gases are admitted through a pipe m tangentially to the heating chamber c<1> and pass through the hollow part d to a chimney n provided with a steam jet for inducing a draught, a trap for condensed steam being provided. The molten bitumen is fed to the pan through a shoot and the sand &c., through the open top; the mixture is discharged through a door l into a shoot l<2>. The pan is supported on the beams a<2> by means of screw jacks to enable it to be lowered away from the scrapers for inspection or repairs.
