Abstract
215,097. Procter, H. A., (Buell, R. N.). Feb. 3, 1923. Pulverulent-fuel burners.-In a pulverulent-fuel burner of the type in which one or more outer casings surround the fuel delivery pipe, one or more preferably ring-shaped deflecting grids, louvers or the like are provided in front of the fuel delivery pipe. Fig. 1 shows a burner having a fuel supply pipe 1 fitted internally with an axially adjustable pipe rod 2 having a preferably coneshaped end protuberance 2 adapted to deflect the fuel on to the surface of conical deflecting rings 7 carried by a collar 10. The collar 10 is secured inside a casing 11 so as to form an annular air circulating passage 12. The casing 11 is formed with a tapered mouthpiece 11. Pipes 13, 13 in the casing may convey air, gas. or oil to cool the casing and to deflect the fuel and assist its combustion. Secondary air is admitted to the burner through ports 14 controlled by a damper 15. Air, gas, or oil may be admitted to the pipe 1 through a perforated pipe 16. A screw-adjusted tilting nozzle 18 is mounted either directly on the pipe 1 or on an intermediate sliding sleeve 17. Air, gas, or oil may also be supplied through the pipe rod 2, which is fitted with an internal conical deflector 6. Alternatively gas or oil may be forced through an internal pipe concentric with pipe rod 2 and having its end perforated or fitted with an atomizer. A V-shaped shield 2b or a surrounding pipe is provided to protect the pipe rod 2 from abrasion by the fuel. In a modification, the deflecting rings are carried by an adjustable extension slidable on the fuel pipe 1, ports being provided to allow auxiliary air to pass through the deflector. In a further modification, the deflecting rings are in two sections, both pivoted to collar 10 so as to be adjustable angularly. In other constructions the grids or louvres are carried by a tip adjustable on the pipe 2 or are pivoted on the conical protuberance 2. The mouthpiece 11 may be pivoted detachably to the casing 11, and an annular chamber may be provided around the pipe 1 to discharge air, gas, or oil to form an envelope for the fuel when burning fuels of low volatile content. The Provisional Specification states that the deflectors mav be made to revolve so as to fling the fuel outwardly, and that automatic means, such as revolving vanes or electrically, pneumatically, or mechanically controlled valves, may be provided to shut off the air, steam, gas, or oil in any of the pipes during combustion. It also states that deflectors may be adjusted electrically, mechanically, or by steam or pneumatic pressure.
