Description

SPECIFICATION A dispensing device for discharging a liquid or pasty product from a container containing such a product The present invention relates to a dispensing device for discharging a liquid or pasty product from a container containing such a product More particularly, the invention relates to such a device of the kind comprising a valve housing provided with a generally cylindrical passage for said product, and two valve means, which are mounted in longitudinally spaced apart positions within waid passage to divide it into three successive portions, consisting of an inlet portion connected to an inlet duct of the device, an outlet portion connected to an outlet duct of the device, and an intermediate valve chamber, the device further comprising a resiliently compressible pressure means which is affixed to an outer peripheral portion of the valve housing and communicates with the valve chamber via a hole provided in the peripheral wall of said chamber, said pressure means being arranged, when subjected to a compression, to cause a discharge of a certain quantity of said product from the valve chamber to the outlet portion of said passage and, when subsequently released, to bring the valve chamber to be refilled with a corresponding quantity of said product from the inlet portion of said passage, the device also comprising a connection piece, by which it may be mounted on a neck portion of a container to connect said inlet duct of the device to the interior of said container.
Several different dispensing devices of said kind are previonsly known. Without exception, these known devices have been utilized only for discharging liquid or pasty products from containers placed above them. The general cylindrical passage in the valve housing has always been formed as a through passage and the connecting piece, by which the device may be mounted on a neck portion of the container, has always been placed in alignment with said passage at the inlet portion end thereof. In practice, it has been indispensable, when using these known devices, to provide special support means behind the valve housing to absorb the comparatively high forces that may be applied on the valve housing in connection with an actuation of the pressure means.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a new and improved dispensing device of the kind initially specified which eliminates the need for separate supporting means for the valve housing. In accordance with the invention, for this purpose, there is proposed a dispensing device of said kind, primarily characterized in that said connecting piece is mounted on a second outer peripheral portion of the valve housing located diametrically opposite to the firstmentioned outer peripheral portion of the valve housing, said inlet duct extending through said second outer peripheral portion in a direction substantially transversal to said passage and terminating in an inlet opening in the peripheral wall of said inlet portion, which, at the end thereof remote from the valve chamber, is closed by an end wall of the valve housing.
The invention results in that, when mounting the device on the neck portion of a container, the valve housing will be located transversally relatively to said neck portion and the pressure means will be positioned in aiignment with the neck portion, on the opposite side of the valve housing. Hereby, forces applied on the valve housing in connection with an actuation of the pressure may be completely absorbed by the container. Accordingly, any separate support means will no longer be required.
In order to make it possible to use the dispensing device also for discharging a liquid or pasty product from an upstanding container, at its upper end provided with a neck portion on which the discharging device is mounted, an outer portion of the inlet duct may be formed by a pipe piece projecting in an outward direction from said second outer peripheral portion of the valve housing to form a connection for a hose that may be inserted into said container.
In order to make it possible to discharge the liquid or pasty product in a convenient direction, irrespectively of whether the device is mounted on an upper or lower neck portion of a container, the outlet duct may be formed by an elongated outlet spout, comprising an inner end portion by which it is rotatably mounted in the valve housing at the end of said housing located adjacent to the outlet portion of said passage, and an outer end portion where the outlet duct terminates into a lateral discharge opening.
Below the invention will be described in further detail, reference being had, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a dispensing device according to an embodiment of the invention as seen in an inclined direction from below, while Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, showing the device mounted on an upper deck portion of a fragmentary illustrated container.
The dispensing device shown in the drawing and generally designated 10 comprises a body forming a valve housing 11 which may be made as an integral piece through injection moulding from a rigid plastic material, such as polypropylene. Said valve housing 11 includes a main portion having the general shape of a horizontal hollow cylinder which, at its one end, is closed by an integral end wall 12 while, at its other end, it is provided with an open end portion 13 in which an elongated outlet spout 14 is mounted by means of a cylindrical end portion 15.
At its upper side, valve housing 11 is provided with an outer peripheral portion having the general shape of a circular plate 16 provided with two annular flanges 17 and 18 projecting from the outer side of said plate. Plate 16 serves to support a compressible pressure means formed by a pressure bulb 19 of generally semispherical shape. Said pressure bulb 19, which for instance may consist of ethylene vinyl acetate, is provided with an annular foot flange 20 which is held in sealing contact against plate 16 by means of a retaining ring 21 cooperating with flange 17.
At its lower side and opposite to plate 16, valve housing 11 is provided with a second outer peripheral portion 22 of generally cylindrical configuration. This second outer peripheral portion 22 serves to carry a screw-cap-like connecting piece 23 by which device 10 may be mounted on an externally threaded neck portion 24 of a container 25 containing a liquid or pasty product. Connecting piece 23 is mounted freely rotatable on portion 22 by means of an inner annular edge portion 26 which is received in an annular outer groove 27 in portion 22.
Within the cylindrical main portion of valve housing 11 there is formed a generally cylindrical passage 28 through which the liquid or pasty product contained in container 25 may be fed to outlet spout 14. By means of two valve means which are mounted in spaced apart positions within passage 28, said passage is divided into three successive portions comprising an inlet portion 28a, an outlet portion 28b and an intertmediate valve chamber 28c. Said valve means are formed by peripheral resiliently flexible generally funnelshaped flanges 29 of disc-like valve members 30, having hub portions 31 by which the valve members are mounted in axially fixed positions within passage 28 on a supporting pin 32 located centrally within said passage. Said supporting pin 32 is formed integrally with valve housing 11 och projects from end wall 12.At its free end, supporting pin 32 projects into a bore 33 in end portion 15 of outlet spout 14.
Reference numeral 34 designates an inlet duct terminating into an inlet opening 35 in the peripheral wall of inlet portion 28a and extending through the outer cylindrical portion 22 in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of passage 28. The outer portion of said inlet duct 34 is formed by a pipe piece 36 projecting from portion 22 to serve as a mounting for a hose 37 which may be inserted into container 25 when mounting device 10 thereon.
Reference numeral 38 designates an opening in plate 16 serving to provide a communication between valve chamber 28c and the interor of pressure bulb 19. The outlet portion 28b of passage 28 is connected to an elongated outlet duct 39 formed in spout 14 and terminating, at the outer end of said spout, into a downwardly directed discharge opening 40.
The manner of operation of the above described dispensing device will be explained below.
The valve means formed by the resiliently flexible funnel-shaped flanges 29 act as one-way valves. In order to ensure that said valve means will function in an appropriate manner, two low annular ridges 41 are provided within passage 28, one behind each one of said valve means. When pressure bulb 19 is compressed, a temporary overpressure will be generated in valve chamber 28c. This overpressure will cause that one of the two valve means 29 which is located adjacent to inlet portion 28a to be forced into sealing contact against the cooperating ridge 41 and the adjacent peripheral wall portion of valve chamber 28c. Simultaneously, the other valve means 29, located adjacent to outlet portion 28, will be resiliently deflected to the right according to Figure 2.Hereby, between the latter valve means and the peripheral wall of passage 28, an annular gap will be formed permitting a certain quantity of the liquid or pasty product to be fed from valve chamber 28c into outlet portion 28b for subsequent discharge through outlet duct 39 and discharge opening 40.
When pressure bulb 19 is then released, a temporary vacuum will be established in valve chamber 28c causing the valve means 29 located adjacent to outlet portion 28b to return into sealing contact against the cooperating ridge 41 while the valve means 29 located adjacent to inlet portion 28a is instead resiiently deflected in a direction to the right according to Figure 2 to permit the valve chamber 28cto be refilled from inlet portion 28a with a quantity of a liquid or pasty product corresponding to the quantity previously discharged from valve chamber 28c to outlet portion 28b. Inlet portion 28a is continuously connected to the interior of container 25 through inlet duct 34 and hose 27 which preferably should extend to the bottom of container 25.
If the dispensing device should instead be mounted on a neck portion at tahe lower end of a container, the discharge spout 14 may be rotated 1800 so as to cause discharge opening 40 to be directed to the same side as pressure bulb 19. In orderto permit the discharge spout 14 to be rotated in the above manner while being simultaneousiy safely maintained in valve housing 11, end portion 15 of said spout is provided with an annular low ridge 42 which engages in an internal groove 43 in valve housing 11.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment above described and shown in the drawing. Instead, many modifications are feasible within the scope of the invention. For instance, the discharge spout need not be provided with a lateral discharge opening. Instead, the discharge opening may be provided in an end surface of said spout. In this case, the discharge spout need not be rotatably mounted in the valve housing.
