Abstract
215,019. Vßg¾, P. V., and Paldy, J. April 28, 1924. Paper bags and the like, making.-In apparatus for closing and binding together sheets of paper by passing them under pressure between two toothed wheels, the wheels 1,2. Fig. 1, are constantly pressed towards one another by the resilient action of a lever. The wheels are provided with sharp, wedge-shaped teeth and with correspondingly-shaped tooth spaces between the teeth, and may be relatively adjustable and radially yieldable, preferably under the action of co-operating springs of different natures. The lower wheel may be rotated by a crank 26, Fig. 1, and mounted in fixed bearings in a frame 25 attachable to a table, whilst the upper wheel 2 is freely mounted on a stud 27 eccentric to a shaft which is rotatably mounted in the frame and which is slotted to engage a blade spring 29. The spring 29 may be adjusted by a set-screw 28 to vary the pressure between the rollers 1, 2 or may be attached to the free end of a spiral spring. The papers are guided by a sheet-metal feed-table 33 tangential to the wheels with one edge bent up and are braked by a blade spring at 35, pressing them against the table 33. In a modification, one wheel may be mounted in a fork 40, Fig. 5, on a spring or other blade 41 forming a two-armed lever co-operating with a fixed abutment 42 and with an adjustable set-screw 43 or an adjustable spring. The wheels may have teeth inclined to their axes. Specification 3441/06 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises other modifications and applications to making paper bags and to tear-off closures. The wheels may be provided with corresponding cleaning-rollers 44, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), or with rotary cylindrical brushes to remove paper dust from the teeth 3. The bearings of one roller may be fixed and those of the other may slide in guides under the action of a spring. In another method avoiding great pressure on the papers, the superposed papers are folded as shown in Fig. 2 (Cancelled), and the fold 4 may be stiffened by corrugating transversely to the fold. The folding may be facilitated by passing the paper through engaging rollers 8, 9, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), of the section shown before passing to folders comprising a guide rib 53, Fig. 8 (Cancelled), and a funnel-shaped groove 50 of dove-tail crosssection, the front ends of the folders being rounded to prevent tearing. The groove may be formed in a single member or may be adjustable by pivoting the side cheeks 18, 19 to the base 20 and adjusting them relatively to each other by right-hand and left-hand screw spindles 15, 16 and an operating lever 17. The rib 53 may be adjustable relatively to the base 20. The papers may pass through the rollers 8, 9 and through the groove 50 and then through corrugating rollers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
