Abstract

A badge for readily-detachable attachment to e.g. the pocket of a blazer comprises an emblem portion 1 adhesively attached to the front face of a backing sheet 4 made from magnetic rubber or magnetic plastics material and a co-operating sheet 5 also made from magnetic rubber or magnetic plastics material. The co-operating sheet 5 is placed against the inside face of the fabric A of the pocket and the emblem with its backing sheet 4 is placed against the front face of the material, such that magnetic attraction between the sheet 4 and 5 clamps the fabric firmly between them to hold the badge detachably in place. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to badges The present invention relates to badges e.g. embroidered ornamental badges intended to be detachably mounted on a breast pocket or on a sleeve or other part of a blazer or other article of clothing.
In one known arrangement the badge is attached to a breast pocket or other parts of a blazer by several pins projecting on the rear side of the badge, the pins piercing the cloth being fastened by covers secured over the free ends of the pins. However, when the badge is removed the pin-holes remain visible in the cloth and detract from the appearance of the blazer.
The present invention provides a badge for detachable attachment to an article of clothing, comprising in combination, a base sheet bearing an emblem portion on its front face and having attached to its rear face a backing sheet being made from a magnetic or magnetizable material, and a co-operating sheet made from a magnetic or magnetizable material such that when the backing sheet and the co-operating sheet are placed on opposite sides of a thickness of clothing fabric, the magnetic attraction between the sheets clamps the badge on the material.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a vertical sectional view of a badge according to the invention detachably mounted on the breast pocket of a blazer.
Referring to the drawing, the emblem part 3 of the badge comprises a base sheet 1 of fabric in circular, polygonal or other desired shape with a pattern 2 embroidered on its front surface. The rear side of the base sheet is fixed, preferably by an adhesive, to a backing sheet 4 having the same shape as the base sheet and being made of a magnetic material. This magnetic material may be ordinary steel but steel is usually too stiff andlor heavy and it is preferred to use instead magnetic rubber or equivalent magnetic plastics material, e.g. natural rubber or urethane into which a magnetizable metal powder is compounded.
This material is both flexible and of comparatively light weight. The badge complete with backing sheet adheres to the rear face of its base sheet 1 is placed on the cloth A in the desired position.
A complementary anchoring sheet 5 made from a magnetic material is disposed on the inside face of the cloth as shown. The sheet 5 may be made from magnetic steel, but is preferably made from magnetic rubber or magnetic plastics material for the same reason as mentioned above. Thus, the backing sheet 4 and the complementary anchoring sheet are attracted to each other through the cloth A and clamp the cloth between them so as to secure the badge in the desired position.
The magnetic material or materials from which the backing sheet 4 and complementary sheet 5 are made may have lines of magnetic force extending in a specific direction and it is desirable to determine previously the relative positions in which the two sheets are most strongly attracted to each other so that the sheets may be placed to apply the greater clamping force to the cloth.
When the emblem part 3 is to be detached from the setting position, it can be done easily by pulling it against the magnetic attractive force.
In the above mentioned embodiment, the badge is suitable for use on thicker cloths, because both the backing sheet 4 and the complementary sheet 5 are made of magnetic rubber or magnetic plastics material. However where the cloth A is thinner, either the backing sheet 4 or the sheet 5 may instead be made from magnetic material such as iron, cobalt or nickel.
The badge can thus easily be attached to and detached from the pocket or sleeve and leaves no traces, marks or worse on the cloth even if the badge is put on and taken off repeatedly.
1. A badge for detachable attachment to an article of clothing, comprising in combination, a base sheet bearing an emblem portion on its front face and having attached to its rear face a backing sheet being made from a magnetic or magnetizable material, and a co-operating sheet made from a magnetic or magnetizable material such that when the backing sheet and the co-operating sheet are placed on opposite sides of a thickness of clothing fabric, the magnetic attraction between the sheets clamps the badge on the material.
2. A badge as claimed in claim 1, wherein both said backing sheet and said co-operating sheet are made from magnetic rubber or magnetic plastics material.
3. A badge as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of said sheets is made from magnetizable metal.
4. A badge as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said backing sheet and cooperating sheet are of the same size and shape.
5. A badge as claimed in claim 4, wherein said backing and co-operating sheets are of the same size and shape as said emblem portion.
6. A badge substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
