Abstract

The device for securing a roof supported bracket 1 to a cross bar 3 of a motor vehicle luggage carrier, has a manually actuatable and eccentric cam 7 pivotally mounted on the walls of the bracket 1. Due to the eccentricity of the cam 7, an operative cylindrical surface 13 thereof is urged with a predetermined force against the cross bar 3 in the clamped position of the cam 7 whereas in the released position thereof it is located at a predetermined clearance from the cross bar 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Quick attachment device for securing a roof supported bracket to motor vehicle luggage carrier cross bar This invention relates to a quick attachment device for rapidly securing a roof supported bracket to a cross bar of a luggage carrier or an analogous carrier of objects on the roof of a motor vehicle. Such objects may also include skis, bicycles and windsurf-boards.
Conventionally such a bracket of a luggage carrier supported on the roof of a motor vehicle is secured to a cross bar of the luggage carrier by mechanical screw means such as a bolt or screw with or without nut.
For actuating such mechanical screw means appropriate actuating means are required such as an Allen wrench or screw driver, depending on the type of screw means used. Tightening the screw means by hand would not be advisable as manual tightening would not provide sufficient force to securely retain the screw means in position.
It is an object of the present invention to eliminate this disadvantage and to provide an attachment device for the aforementioned purpose, which can be actuated by hand, ensures a safe clamping effect and above all can be actuated rapidly.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a quick attachment device of the type described above, characterized in that the member for securing the bracket to the cross bar is formed by a manually actuatable cam pivotally mounted on the walls of the bracket perpendicularly thereto, the operative cylindrical surface of the cam being urged with a predetermined force determined by the eccentricity of the cam and its interference with the cross bar against the latter in the clamped position of the cam whereas in the released position of the cam it is arranged with a predetermined clearance from the surface of the cross bar.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the only Figure is a side view, partly in section, of a quick attachment device according to the invention.
The Figure of the drawing shows a bracket 1 which forms part of a luggage carrier and can be secured by known means to the roof of a motor vehicle (not shown). A cross bar 3 of the luggage carrier is slidably received in an appropriate seat 5 in the bracket 1.
The cross bar 3 can be locked in the desired position means of a cam 7 pivotally eccentrically mounted on an axle 9 and formed integrally with a laterally extending, manually actuatable control lever 11. The cam 7 has an operative surface 13 which is substantially cylindrical and axially displaced from the axis of rotation formed by the axle 9.
The operative position of the cam is shown in solid lines in the Figure and the inoperative position in dash lines.
The operation of this quick attachment device is as follows: When it is desired to place and lock the cross bar 3 in a given position with respect to the bracket 1, the control lever 11 is actuated and moved from the dash line position, in which the cam 7 is released, to the solid line position in which the cam is locked.
In the locked position of the cam 7 its operative surface 13 has a predetermined interference with the surface of the cross bar 3 to lock the latter with respect to the bracket 1.
1. A quick attachment device for securing a roof supported bracket to a motor vehicle luggage carrier cross bar, characterized in that the member for securing the bracket to the cross bar is formed by a manually actuatable cam pivotally mounted on the walls of the bracket perpendicularly thereto, the operative cylindrical surface of the cam being urged with a predetermined force determined by the eccentricity of the cam and its interference with the cross bar against the latter in the clamped position of the cam whereas in the released position of the cam it is arranged with a predetermined clearance from the surface of the cross bar.
2. A quick attachment device for securing a roof supported bracket to a motor vehicle luggage carrier cross bar, substantially as hereinbefore particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
