Abstract

A pressure vessel which combines more than one media which is used to remove contamination from water. The media are capable of three functions, particulate and colloidal filtration, adsorption or organic substances and ion exchange dissolved mineral removal. The vessel has part of it transparent to indicate when it is no longer functioning. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Combined water purifier This invention relates to a combined water purifier.
Water filters, carbon filters and deionisers are available for purifying water. Many types of deionisers need a conductivity meter to indicate when the unit is no longer functioning. For people wanting small quantities of purified water often all three items have to be purchased together with a conductivity meter.
The combined water purifier incorporates a particulate filter, activated carbon and ion exchange resin in one pressure vessel. The pressure vessel is transparent so that inspection of the ion exchange resin will indicate when the unit is no longer functioning.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example. Referring to Figure 1.
Water enters the cartridge through the bottom entry (6) of the pressure vessel. The main body (5) of the pressure vessel being transparent. On passing through the filter (4) particulate matter is removed. The activated carbon (3) will remove the less ionised contaminanats. These typically being of an organic nature. The ion exchange resin (2) is a mixture of cation and anion resins in the hydrogen and hydroxide form. The dissolved ions in the water will exchange with the hydrogen and hydroxide thus purifying the water and changing the acidity and alkalinity of the ion exchange resin. The resin has been fixed with a chemical which will change colour as the acidity and alkalinity alters. In this manner as the resin becomes exhausted its colour changes thus indicating when the cartridge is no longer functioning. As the pressure vessel is clear near the exit, it is easily seen when it is necessary to change it without having to use conductivity measuring equipment. The filter (1) retains the resin.
1. The combined water purifier enables water to be purified by removing particulate and colloidal matter dissolved organics and dissolved ions.
2. The combined water purifier enables small volumes of purified water to be obtained using a single purifier instead of several separate items.
3. A combined water purifier indicates when it is no longer functioning by means of a colour change. There is no need for instrumentation.
4. A combined water purifier is able to operate directly on pressurised water supplies as the media is contained in a pressure vessel.
