Abstract

In the yieldable mounting of plough members such as a skim (5) and/or disc (68) the or each plough member (5, 6) is movably mounted from support structure (1, 10) carrying an associated plough body (11), and is connected to resiliently loaded means (7, 8). Thus the skim (5) is shown pivotally mounted from the leg (10) by an arm (50) and is linked by a turnbuckle (55) to a rod (7) slidably mounted on the arm (1) against spring loading (8). Similarly the disc (6) is pivotally mounted by an arm (60) and bracket (62) from the arm (1) and linked by a turnbuckle (66) to the rod (7). The spring (8) and rod (7) provide common spring loading to the skim (5) and disc (6) for their yielding movement together and in a similar manner to a further skim (5') and disc (6') in the case of a reversable plough. Selective connection (57, 67) of the turnbuckles (55, 66) to the rod (7) is also shown for adjustment purposes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vieldable Mounting of Plough Members The object ofthis invention is to provide improved yieldable mounting of such plough members as skims and discs especially of reversible ploughs for yielding movement in the event of their encountering an obstruction such as a stone, rock or root in the ground.
According to this invention yieldable mounting of a plough member such as a skim and/or disc or more than one thereof is characterised by the member or members being movably mounted on support structure such as an arm carrying an associated plough body, and connected to resiliently loaded means carried by the support structure for maintaining the member or members in the normal position of use but permitting their upward yielding movement on encountering an obstruction in the ground.
Atypical practical arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and 2 are diagrammatic side elevations respectively showing a skim and disc in the normal position of use and their yielding movement on encountering an obstruction in the ground.
The invention is shown applied to the mounting of the skims 5 and discs 6 of a reversible plough but may be applied to such members of a nonreversible plough.
The plough bodies 11 are shown mounted by legs 10 from an arm 1 mounted at its forward end from the plough beam 3 which mounting is preferably yieldable at 2 e.g. in the manner set forth in my prior patents Nos. 2,045,041 and 2,053,637 so that the operative plough body 11 in the ground can yield on encountering a stone or the like S by upward pivotal movement of the arm 1.
In such a case the operative skim 5 and disc 6 are also lifted with the arm 1 but in the event of the skim 5 and/or disc 6 separately encountering an obstruction they are yieldably mounted in accordance with this invention.
For this purpose each skim 5 and disc 6 is movably mounted from the support structure generally provided by the arm 1 and legs 10 i.e. by pivotally mounted secondary arms 50, 60.
Thus the arm 50 carrying the skim 5 is pivotally mounted at 51 from the depending leg 10 and the disc 6 is rotatably carried by the arm 60 pivotally mounted at 61 from a forward depending bracket 62 carried by the main arm 1.
Each arm 50, 60 is connected to resiliently loaded linkage of which the links 55,66 are shown in the form ofturn buckles for adjustment purposes pivotally connected between the arms 50, 60 at or adjacent their skim or disc carrying end and to a rod 7 slidable in bearings 71 along the main arm 1. The slide rod 7 is spring loaded by a compression spring 8 or other suitable means having a spring loading action, the compression spring 8 acting between an abutment 78 on the rod 7 and a rear fixed abutment 81 on the arm 1.
Thus on the skim 5 and/or disc 6 encountering a stone or other obstruction in the ground they are able to rise with a yielding action by the corresponding movement of the arms 50,60 and the turnbuckles 55, 66 which thrust the slide rod 7 rearwardly against the loading of the compression spring 8.
In the arrangement shown and in the event of the skim 5 and/or disc 6 striking the obstruction the movement of the slide rod 7 and action of the arms 50, 60 and links 55, 66 is such that both the skim 5 and disc 6 are raised. Similar free movement of the skim 5' and disc 6' in the inoperative raised position is also obtained and which may serve to indicate when an obstruction has been encountered.
In practice and as shown, the disc 6 usually rides over the obstruction S at the same time causing the skim 5 to be lifted by the action of the linkage.
Whereas the above described arrangement is simple and effective and enables a pair of skims 5 and discs 6 to be resiliently loaded for yielding movement by a single compression spring 8, if desired each skim 5 and disc 6 may be connected to resiliently loaded linkage for independent operation e.g. of the pair of skims 5 or of the pair of discs 6.
For setting or adjustment purposes the turnbuckles 55,66 are shown selectively connectible to one of a series of holes 57,67 in the slide rod 7 e.g. to suit particular operating conditions whilst the spring loading at 8 is shown adjustable by a nut 70 threaded on the rear end of the slide rod 7 and for contact with the rear fixed abutment 81.
