Abstract

214,655. Flodin, H. G., and Nobel, E. April 20, 1923, [Convention date]. Dry processes of extracting metals; alloys; briquetting processes.-Metals and alloys low in carbon, for example ferro-chromium, are obtained. from the ores by briquetting the finely-divided ore with such a proportion of a carbonaceous reducing agent part or all of which may be in the form of molasses, sulphite lye, tar, &c., that all the carbon is used up in the reduction: the briquettes are composed, or so pressed, or both, that their specific gravity is lower than that of the slag produced so that the reduction occurs at the surface of the slag, and the composition of the briquettes is preferably such that a stiff layer of slag of substantial depth is formed. The briquettes may be fed to an electric furnace 7 through shoots 4, 6 arranged to spread them over the entire surface of the slag bath 2. The gases formed pass up the shoots 4 and, after effecting pre-heating of the charge, can be utilized for reducing or other purposes.
