Abstract

An adjustable fastener for mounting door or window frames (12) or the like in an opening in a building structure (13), comprises a holding member (2) having a internally-threaded through hole (4); a locking member (5) driven into the frame (12) for locking said holding member (2) in said frame; a thrust member (6) having a externally threaded plug portion (8) and provided with a through hole (9), and a screw (1) for securing said thrust member (6) to the building structure. Adjustment may be made by slackening the screw (1) via holes (11) and (9), and rotating the thrust member (6) by means of a polygonal-section tool (not shown) inserted via hole 11 into engagement with the polygonal cross-section of the hole (9). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An adjustable fastening means for mounting frames, sashes or the like The present invention relates to a fastening means to be used for mounting frames, sashes, or the like in an appropriate opening in a building structure.
In the Norwegian Patent Application No. 82 4083 of the Applicants a new process for mounting frames, sashes or the like in building structures is disclosed, and in the same Application a new fastening means to be used with the disclosed process is also described.
The adjustable fastening means according to the Norwegian Patent Application No. 82 4083 is essentially characterized by the fact that it comprises two circular members mounted one inside the other and being adjustable. One member, the so called holding member being mounted in a recess in the frame, sash, or the like, comprises a head being engaged with said recess, and an externally threaded plug the diameter of which is considerably smaller than that of the recess. Said holding member is preferably provided with a central through hole. The other member, the so called thrust member, comprises a head and a plug portion, the entire thrust member having a through hole for receiving the externally threaded plug of the holding member.
The invention according to the Norwegian Patent Application No. 82 4083 rendered it possible to mount and adjust frames, sashes, and the like in a simple and rapid manner and with great precision as well. In practical cases, e.g. doors, windows or the like will be delivered with recesses in the frame and with the necessary number of fastening means. For mounting the fastening means are knocked with one end partly into the recesses. The dor, window or the like is placed in the appropriate opening in the wall, and by turning the thrust member its head is contacted, and if desired, engaged with the surrounding structure. In this man ner the door, window, or the like is mounted and adjusted. Mounting and adjusting is done without any use of wedges or blocks, and such aids may, thus, be eliminated.
The aforesaid fastening means proved to be efficient and suitable in mounting frames, sashes, and the like, as doors, windows, etc. in building structures as regards forcing the frame, sash, or the like into a certain distance from the exterior surfaces of the recesses in the surrounding building structure.
It is, however, often necessary to push the frame, sash, or the like closer to said recess in the building structure after finishing the mounting, sometimes, when the assembly has been used for some time. Such readjustment, however, turned out to be rather difficult with the fastening means according to the aforesaid fastening means according to said Norwegian Patent Application. For such readjustment it was necessary to remove strips etc.
covering the fastening means and, furthermore, the holding member is subjected to such pulling forces that its engagement with the frame or sash is broken.
It is, thus, an object of the present invention to eliminate the aforesaid disadvantages. This is achieved by the aid of a new fastening means that may be considered an improvement of the fastening means according to the Applicant's Norwegian Patent Application No. 82 4083.
The characterizing features of the fastening means accordirg to the present invention will appear from the following claims.
It is worth observing that even though the various members of the fastening means show several common features with those of the fastening means according to the Norwegian Patent Application No. 82 4083 , the main members of the present fastening means have reversed positions in relation to what is disclosed in the aforesaid Norwegian Patent Application, as regards the mounting in the frame and the recess in the building structure respectively. The member having a hole with interior threads is, thus, now mounted in the recess of the frame, whereas the other member, comprising a head and an externally threaded plug, with its head is in contact with the recess surface of the building structure.
According to the invention, the fastening means, additionally comprises a locking member, preferably a locking ring for securing the so called holding member, i.e. the member having an internally threaded hole, to the recess in the frame or the sash.
The thrust member, i.e. the member comprising the externally threaded plug having its head is in contact with the recess surface in the building structure, is secured to the building structure, preferably, by the aid of a screw having its head in contact with a stop arranged so far inside the inner through hole of the thrust member that the portion of the hole facing the inside of the frame or sash remains free when said screw is mounted. The last mentioned portion of the hole is shaped for insertion of a tool by the aid of which the thrust member may be turned and adjusted, after said screw is somewhat loosened.
An embodiment of the invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the drawings, where Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the 4 members forming the fastening means, and Figure 2 shows the fastening means completely mounted in the frame/sash and the surrounding building structure respectively.
Figure 1 shows the screw 1 and the holding member 2 with its head 3 and its through hole 4 being internally threaded.
Figure 1, also, shows the locking ring 5 and the thrust member 6 comprising a head 7, a plug 8 provided with external threads and a through hole 9. The fact that the hole 9 in its lower portion close to head 7 is provided with a stop for the head of screw 1 and that the hole 9 above said stop is not round, but polygonal, is not shown.
Figure 2 shows the fastening means in a mounted condition. The holding member 2 is mounted in a corresponding recess in the frame or sash 12, to which the holding member is firmly secured by a locking ring 5. For mounting the locking ring 5 is forced over the more narrow portion of the holding member 2. When the locking ring 5 contacts the inclined edge of head 3, the upper slotted edge portions of the locking ring are pushed into the frame/sash 12. The thrust member 6 is in contact with the surface 13 of the surrounding building structure with its head 7 and is secured to said structure by a screw 1. The head of the screw 1 is in contact with stop 10 in the hole 9 of the thrust member. The plug shaped portion 8 of the thrust member 6 is partly screwed into the holding member 2.
To adjust the distance between the frame/sash 12 and the surrounding building structure 13 the following steps may be carried out: A screw driver is inserted among others through hole 11 in the frame/sash 12 and screw 1 is loosened somewhat.
By, then, inserting e.g. a polygonal tool engaging thrust member 6, that has a polygonal cross section of the upper portion of hole 9, it is possible to turn the entire thrust member 6 in the desired direction. After completion of the turning operation of thrust member 6 the screw 1 is retightened.
