Abstract

The support bracket (3) comprises a hanging portion (3<1>) by which the bracket can be connected to a wall mounted rail (1) of the rack system and a support arm (3<2>) projecting from the hanging portion. The hanging portion has upper and lower spaced limbs (3<3>), each with a notch or groove (3<4>) extending vertically from its lowermost surface for engaging with a marginal portion around an elongate slot (see Fig. 1) in the rail. A plastics insert (7) is engaged in a recess (3<5>) in the hanging portion between the upper and lower limbs thereof. The insert has two spaced side portions (7<1>, 7<2>) and a transverse portion (7<3>) joining the side portions along an edge thereof. The thickness of the transverse portion corresponds to the depth of the recess and edges of the side portions abut with elastic compression against the rail (1) when the hanging portion is connected thereto to promote stability of the bracket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A support bracket for a wall mounted rack system This invention relates to a support bracket for a wall mounted rack system and to a rack system including a plurality of such brackets.
Such rack systems are known for supporting, inter alia, furnishing materials and shelves.
The invention seeks to provide a support bracket and a rack system which are reliable in operation and both simple and inexpensive to make.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a support bracket for a wall mounted rack system, comprising a hanging portion by which the bracket can be connected to a wall mounted rail of the rack system, a support arm projecting from the hanging portion, and a plastics insert disposed in a recess in the hanging portion, the insert having two spaced side portions and a transverse portion joining the side portions along an edge thereof and having a thickness corresponding to the depth of the recess, the arrangement being such that edges of the side portions abut with elastic compression against the rail of the rack system when the hanging portion is connected thereto.
Preferred and/or optional features of the first aspect of the invention are set forth in Claims 2-5.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a rack system comprising support brackets and wall mountable channel shaped rails with elongate slots therein for receiving the hanging portions of the support brackets.
A preferred feature of the second aspect of the invention is set forth in Claim 8.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a rack system with two embodiments of a support bracket according to the invention, Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the upper support bracket of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows the support bracket of Fig. 2 connected to a rail of the rack system, which rail is shown in section, Fig. 4 is a top plan view partly in section of the support bracket and rail shown in Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 illustrating the lower support bracket of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 illustrating another embodiment of the support bracket according to the invention, and Fig. 7 is a side view showing yet a further embodiment of the support bracket with two hanging portions.
Referring to the drawings, the rack system comprises channel-shaped rails 1 and support brackets 3. Each rail 1 is provided with through holes 1 ' for receiving fastening screws 2, which secure the rail to a wall, and elongate vertically orientated slots 1 2 for receiving hanging portions 31 of the support brackets 3. The rail 1 has inturned flanges 13 at the free edges of its sides and these flanges 13 abut against a wail to which the rail is secured.
A plastics block 5 is fitted into the channel of the rail and has a through hole 51 The hole 5t has a shoulder along the entire thickness of the block or a part thereof in order to define a chamber in which one end of a fixing plug 6 is engaged and centred. The other end of the plug is inserted into a hole in the wall.
Screw 2 passes through hole 11 in the rail, the hole 51 in the block and into the fixing plug 6.
The support bracket 3 shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1, and in Figs. 2-4, comprises a hanging portion 31 and a support arm 32 which are joined together at 36 and 37 respectively by any appropriate means. The hanging portion 3' has upper and lower spaced limbs 33 each with a vertically extending notch 34 in its lowermost surface. The notches 34 are vertically aligned and engage marginal portions around respective elongate slots 12 in the rail 1. The hanging portion also has a recess 35 between the limbs 33 and to that side of the notches 34 adjacent to the arm 3.
The recess 35 is preferably of dove-tailed shape and is for receiving a plastics insert 7.
The insert 7 has two profiled parallel spaced sides 71 and 72 and a transverse portion 73 joining the sides 7' and 72 along an edge thereof. The thickness of the transverse portion 73 corresponds to the depth of the recess 35 in the hanging portion 3'.
When the support bracket 3 is connected to the rail 1 with the transverse portion 73 of the insert in the recess 35, the insert ensures that the bracket interlocks with and is square to the rail 1. Moreover the edges of the sides 7' and 72 which are joined by the transverse portion 73 are securely abutted with elastic compression against the rail 1, thus improving greatly the stability of the brackets.
The insert which forms an elastic stop may be provided with sides which present a diversified and decorative contour while permitting references or the like to be recorded thereon. Moreover, the width of the insert is such that there will be no projection beyond the medial spacing between centres separating slots which are juxtaposed and/or in superimposition on the rack.
Fig. 5 shows a support bracket 3 which has a single support arm 32 and two hanging portions 31. Each hanging portion has an associated insert 7.
Fig. 6 shows a support bracket 3 which has a single support arm 32 and two hanging portions 31. In this case however a single insert 7 is common to both hanging portions 31 and fits in recesses therein.
Fig. 7 shows a support bracket with a support arm 8 and a hanging portion 81 at each end of the arm 8.
