Abstract
Alkyl derivatives of metals of the second subgroup of the fourth periodic group are prepared by treating a finely divided alloy of the metal with an alkali or alkaline earth metal, under pressure, with an alkyl halide other than an alkyl iodide; metallic zinc, or aluminium or ferric chloride may also be present as a catalyst. Alloys containing 10-20 per cent of sodium are referred to. The reaction vessel is advantageously provided with heating or cooling coils or jacket and also stirring mechanism: it may for example contain balls and be capable of being rotated: the excess alkyl halide is distilled off and the metal alkyl isolated by steam distillation or extraction with a solvent. Examples are given in which a tin-sodium alloy is treated with methyl chloride, a lead-sodium alloy with ethyl chloride or bromide, and a lead-sodium-zinc alloy with ethyl chloride.
