Abacuses are provided with one or more rows 8 of reference counters for use as indicators and situated between, for example, the pounds and shillings and the shillings and pence. These counters 8 are preferably of a different shape, size and colour from the ordinary counters 5, the rows of which may be sub-divided by colouring some of the beads and the sixth row comprising ten beads each representing ten shillings. A scale may be placed on the left, the side members 7 are tapered, and to guard against accidental displacement the guide wires 6 may be bent slightly upwards from their ends towards the centre. In a modification there is an indicator counter at one and the same end of each wire 6, these indicators being separated from the counters 5 by a partition extending parallel to the sides 7.
