Abstract

A moulded lid for a container has a peripheral rim (11) adapted to mate with an associated container. A central portion surrounded by the rim (11) includes a plurality of rigid, elongate support members (20) extending across the central portion (12) for reinforcing the central portion (12) against loads supported in use. The support members (20) are inserted after moulding of the lid (10). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in lids for containers The invention relates to moulded lids for containers.
According to the invention, there is provided a moulded lid for a container comprising a rim adapted to mate with an associated container, and a central portion surrounded by the rim, the central portion including a plurality of rigid, elongate support members extending across the central portion for reinforcing the central portion against loads supported by the central portion in use.
The rim may be hollow.
The central portion may be moulded to provide a series of tubular formations extending across the central portion of the lid. Each support member may lie within a tubular formation.
The lid may be rectangular, and the tubular formation and the support members may lie parallel to one pair of edges.
The ends of the support members may extend into the hollow rim.
The invention further provides a method of producing a lid according to the invention comprising the steps of moulding a lid with a rim, a central portion surrounded by the rim and means in the central portion for enegagement by rigid elongate support members, and engaging support members with the engagement means.
Each support member is preferably engaged with the lid by sliding the members through a hole in the rim, and each hole is preferably closed after passage of the associated support member therethrough.
By way of example, one embodiment of a lid for a container according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a plan view of a lid; Figure 2 is a side view of the lid of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section along the lines A-A in Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a sectional view along the lines B-B in Figure 1.
As shown in Figure 1,a moulded lid 10 for a container has a peripheral rim 11 adapted to mate with an associated container and a central portion 12 surrounded by the rim 11.
The lid is moulded from a suitable plastics material, in this particular embodiment polyethylene, and as can be seen in Figures 3 and 4, the rim 11 is hollow. The rim 11 has a tapered lower portion presenting a bevelled surface 13 for engagement with the top of a supporting container 14 shown in chain lines in Figure 3 and 4.
The central portion 12 of the lid is moulded with a series of parallel, tubular formations indicated at 15, 16 and 17 in Figure 3. The tubular formation 15 adjacent the rim 11 is substantially circular in internal cross section, although the formation 15 has a flattened base portion 18. The tubular formations 16 and 17 are hexagonal in cross section. Across the centre of the lid extends a second substantially circular tubular formation 19 and a third substantially circular tubular formation extends across the central portion 12 adjacent the rim 11 at the side of the central portion opposite to that where the tubular formation 15 lies. The hexagonal tubular formations occupy the central portion 12 between the substantially circular tubular formations.
The polyethylene moulding is made with three holes in the hollow rim 11, each being aligned with one of the substantially circular cross section tubular elements. A rigid, elongate support member 20 in the form of a steel or aluminium bar is inserted through each hole and into the associated tubular formation. When the three members 20 are in position, the holes are plugged by spin-welding plugs 21. In this way, three support members are held positively in the material of the lid and extend across the central portion, one in the centre of the central portion 12 and the other two support members along edges of the central portion.
The central portion presents an upwardly facing recess for locating a container to be supported on the lid 10. The three support members 20 reinforce the lid 10 to provide adequate support for loads located on the central portion 12.
It will be appreciated that a particular embodiment of a lid has been described which includes three support members but that different sizes of lid will require different numbers of support members.
