Abstract

Decorative wall panelling comprising rectangular panels spaced apart by a framework of elongated parallel and mutually-perpendicular support members, characterised by parallel first support members 2 and parallel second support members 3 perpendicular to the first support members, the sides of all the support members being rebated underneath to cover the adjacent panel edges, and profiled on top to produce a decorative effect, wherein the first support members 2 extend beyond the ends of the adjacent panels 1 and the second support members 3 are of the same length as those sides of the adjacent panels which extend parallel to them and have ends 6 shaped to fit closely the profiling on the sides of the first support members, so that each of the second support members exactly spans the space between two adjacent parallel first support members and forms a smooth joint with both of them. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Wall panelling This invention relates to a decorative wall panelling, such as is commonly used to clad the interior walls of houses, offices, and other buildings. It particularly relates to wooden panelling which can be easily fitted by the handyman without recourse to special tools or special skills andwhich is ofthetraditional type comprising rectangular panels spaced apart by a framework of elongated parallel and mutually-per pendicularsupportmemberswhich are parallel to the sides ofthe panels.
According to the invention, wall panelling of the abovetype comprises parallel first support members and parallel second support members perpendicular to the first support members, the sides of all of the support members being rebated underneath to cover the adjacent panel edges, and profiled on top to produce a decorative effect, wherein the first support members extend beyond the ends ofthe adjacent panels and the second support members are ofthe same length as those sides ofthe adjacent panels which extend parallel to them and have ends shaped to fit closelythe profiling on the sides ofthefirst support members, so that each ofthe second support members exactly spans the space between the adjacent parallel firstsupport members and forms a smooth joint with both ofthem.
The first support members preferably extend over several panels and more preferably overthe whole width or height ofthe panelling, It is to be noted that the first support members may extend either vertically or horizontally, in which case the second support members would extend horizontally orvertically, respectively.
Panelling embodying the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa perspective view showing a portion of the panelling, partially assembled, Figure 2 is a perspective view showing how the support membersfittogether, Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view showing another aspect ofthe invention, and Figures 4 and 5 show more exactly, respectively in perspective and in section, howthe support members fittogether.
The panelling shown in Figure 1 comprises a plurality of identical rectangular panels 1, each having a conventional decoratively-shaped surface and plain edges. The panels are spaced apart by a framework consisting of horizontally- and vertically-extending support members, 2 and 3 respectively. The upper vertical support member is shown slightly spaced from the assembly, as though it were about to be fitted. In this case, the horizontal support members extend over several panels, and preferably over the whole width of the panelling, whilst each ofthe vertical support members extends over the height of one panel only and so spans the space between two adjacent horizontal support members. Thus, the horizontal support members 2 and the vertical support members 3 constitute, respectively, the first and second support members mentioned above.
The underneath of both first and second support members 2,3, is rebated 4 at both lateral edges to allowthe support members to fit overthe edges of the panels and thus hold them securely in position. The tops of both lateral edges ofthe support members 1,2 are decoratively profiled, as shown at 5. The ends 6 of the second, vertical support members are shaped in a mannerwhich is complementaryto the shape ofthis profiling 5, so that those endsfit snugly against the profiled sides ofthe first, horizontal, support members in the assembled panelling, thus providing a neat finish.
Screwholes7 are provided atintervals in the support members in order to receive fixing screws and wooden fillers or caps 8 are provided to fill the screw holes to improve the appearance ofthe mounted panelling.
In order to assemblethe panelling, the horizontal support members are first fixed to the wall with screws, so that they are parallel and are spaced apart by the correct distance (i.e. so that the spaces between them can be exactly spanned bythe vertical support members, and so that the panels will fit exactly between them.
Panels and vertical support members are then mounted alternately.
The panels can be slid into position along the horizontal fixing members from one end ofthe panelling, andthevertical support members are screwed to the wall with their shaped ends butting against the profiled edges ofthe horizontal support members, and one side edge fitting overthe edge of a panel which is already in position. Thus, the panelling can be erected by the average home handyman without the need for special tools or special skills.
Of course, the longerfirst support members 2 may equallywell extend vertically, in which case the shorter second support members 3would extend horizontally.
