Abstract

An upright bin moulded in plastics 15 and provided with a pair of wheels 23 mounted the base of a sidewall of the bin to render the bin mobile, in order to facilitate the removal of grit from the bin, the bin has a baffle plate (20) located within the bin towards the lower end thereof and extending downwardly at an angle of about fifty-five degrees from a front wall (11) of the bin but stopping short of the rear wall to leave a throat (21) through which grit may flow from the main part of the bin above the baffle plate on to the bottom wall (14) of the bin. The front wall of the bin has a large rectangular aperture (22) below the baffle plate through which grit resting on the bottom wall of the bin can be removed by shovel. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Mopile container for granular or particulate material The invention relates to mobile containers for granular or particulate material such as grit or salt for use, for example, on roads, pathways, parking areas or the like to prevent icing.
The invention provides a mobile container for granular or particulate material comprising an upright bin for holding a supply of material having forward and rearward sides, a baffle in the bin spaced above the bottom of the bin extending from the forward side of the bin in a downwardly inclined direction to form a funnel adjacent the rearward side of the bin for controlling the flow of material to the bottom of the bin, an aperture in the forward side of the bin adjacent the bottom of the bin below the baffle through which material on the bottom of the bin may be removed and wheels mounted for rotation about an axis at the rear lower side of the bin to enable the bin to be tipped rearwardly about the axis and wheels along with the aperture in the front side inclined upwardly to prevent loss of material therefrom.
The following is a description of a specific embodiment of the invention reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through a mobile container for grit or other granular or particulate material; Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure 1 showing the container partly filied; Figure 3 is a detailed view of an upper part of the container and its lid; Figure 4 is a front perspective view of the container with a shovel mounted on the front of the container; and Figure 5 is a front perspective view of the container with the shovel removed.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a mobile container for granular or particulate material and in particular for grit comprising an upright bin 10 moulded in plastics and of generally square cross-section having front and rear walls 11, 12, side walls 13 and a bottom wall 14. The front and rear walls converge slightly towards the bottom of the bin as do the side walls 13. The top of the bin is formed with a downturned encircling channel section rim 1 5. The bin is provided with a lid 1 6 and the rearward part of the rim is formed with three spaced apart lugs 17 between which hollow ribbed sleeves 18 extend. The lid 16 is formed with two spaced lugs 1 6a at the rearward side thereof which are pivotally connected to the outer lugs on the bin by headed pins 1 9 which are an interference fit in the outer ends of the sleeves 1 8.
The ribbed sleeves also provide a handle for the bin as described later.
A downwardly inclined baffle plate 20 is mounted within the bin towards the lower end thereof, the plate extending from the front wall 11 of the bin downwardly and rearwardly towards the lower rear corner of the bin at an angle of about 550 to the front wall of the bin. The baffle 20 stops short of the rear wall leaving a throat 21 to control flow of material from the main part of the bin above the baffle plate on to the bottom wall 14.
The front wall 11 of the bin is formed with a large rectangular aperture 22 extending from a location immediately below the baffle to just above the bottom wall of the bin for removal of the material on the bottom wall using a shovel.
To render the bin mobile, a pair of wheels 23 arc mounted on an axle 24 supported in integral bearers 25 recessed into the lower rearward corner of the bin so that the bottom periphery of the wheels 23 extends just below the rear corner of the bin to support the latter clear of the ground.
In the static position the rear of the bin is supported on the wheels 23 and the front end of the bottom wall 14 rests on the ground as depicted in Figures 4 and 5. As indicated earlier, the sleeve 18 at the upper end of the rearward side of the bin provides a hand-hold for the bin and when the bin is to be moved, it is tipped rearwardly until the centre of gravity of the bin lies roughly over the wheel axis and then the bin can be wheeled around without the user taking any significant part of the weight of the bin. Since the bin is tipped rearwardly when in movement, the bottom of the bin is upwardly inclined as is the aperture 22 in the front wall of the bin to prevent loss of material through the aperture.
Referring to Figures 4 and 5 a C-shaped spring clip 26 is mounted on the front rim 1 5 of the bin and a shovel 27 is mounted on the front of the bin with the shaft of the shovel locked in the C-clip and the blade of the shovel located in the aperture 22.
1. A mobile container for granular or particulate material comprising an upright bin for holding a supply of material having forward and rearward sides, a baffle in the bin spaced above the bottom of the bin extending from the forward side of the bin in a downwardly inclined direction to form a funnel adjacent the rearward side of the bin for controlling the flow of material to the bottom of the bin, an aperture in the forward side of the bin adjacent the bottom of the bin below the baffle through which material on the bottom of the bin may be removed and wheels mounted for rotation about an axis at the rear lower side of the bin to enable the bin to be tipped rearwardly about the axis and wheels along with the aperture in the front side inclined upwardly to prevent loss of material therefrom.
2. A mobile container as claimed in claim 1 wherein a handle is provided at the upper rearward side of the bin for the user to hold when tipping and wheeling the bin.
3. A container as claimed in claim 2 wherein the bin has an encircling rim around its upper periphery and the handle is formed integrally with the rim.
4. A bin as claimed in any of the preceding
