Abstract

Coils, machines and apparatus for making.- In a coil-winding device as described in the parent Specification, an improved packing device is used for pressing on the coil sides before they are spread, and swinging coil end-guides and side-guides, movable towards each other, are employed. The packing device, Fig. 1, consists of a block 3 feathered at 5 on the winding guide 7 to which it may be locked. The block carries a presser 9, which may be screwed down on the coil by a screw 13, and a side. presser 19 controlled by a pin 15 and adjusting-screw 25. Fig. 2 shows the coil end-guides 48, 49 carried by bars 50, 52 which are mounted so as to swivel at 62 on the block 64 and so as to be adjustable for different coil widths by means of a nut 56. The block 64 slides freely on the longitudinal bar 30 and may be locked at any position thereon. The coil side-guides 7 are carried on bars 40 supported by rods 42 which slide in sleeves 44 in the members on the spreading screws 46 so that the sides of the coil, when clamped to the side-guides by means of the pressers, Fig. 1, may be moved towards each other. When the coil has been wound with the parts as in Fig. 2, the blocks 64 are undamped from the bar 30 and the side-guides are moved towards each other, the blocks 64 simultaneously moving inwards. The journals 62 are then unclamped and the bars 40 are moved oppositely, perpendicularly to the coiling plane, to spread the coil, the end guides meanwhile swinging in their supports. By setting one of the bars 40 substantially in line with the end guides 68. Fig. 3, a rhomboidal loop for an Eickemeyer coil mav be wound. The coil is formed. as shown in dotted lines, by moving one side guide towards the other after unclamping the blocks 64.
