Abstract
The device is adapted to be incorporated in a domestic rain water drainage system and incorporates a screen 7 through which water can flow to a discharge outlet but which traps foreign matter such as leaves. The screen is inclined at an angle to the horizontal so that the foreign matter travels down the inclination to be discharged from the device. By this means, the foreign matter does not remain on the screen obstructing the through flow of water. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A screen device for a drainage system
This invention relates to a screen device for a rain water drainage system for buildings.
One perennial problem which arises each autumn for house owners is that of leaves blocking the rain water drainage system of their houses so that the rain water overflows the gutters and down pipes. The rain then runs down the walls of the house causing dampness and other problems. One known solution to this problem is to close the top of the gutters with a mesh which prevents the leaves falling in the gutter. However, this arrangement provides only a partial solution since the leaves tend to remain on the mesh, which is disposed generally horizontally, so that although the gutters may not be blocked, the leaves must still be removed from the gutter system as they can prevent the rainwater entering the gutters.
This solution also has the disadvantage that the entire gutter system must be covered in the mesh, which not only means that the work of installation is lengthy and expensive but that the amount of mesh material itself is also substantial and hence expensive.
The present invention seeks to provide a device which overcomes or substantially mitigates the disadvantages of the known arrangements.
According to the present invention there is provided a screen device for a rain water discharge system, the device being adapted to receive outflow from a gutter or pipe and including a screen having orifices therein through which water can pass to an outlet passage below the screen, the screen being inclined at an angle to the horizontal, the arrangement being such that foreign matter trapped by the screen travels down the inclination to a position in which the flow of water through the orifices of the screen is not prevented by said foreign matter.
In one preferred form of the invention, the screen is incorporated in a hopper to which one or more gutters or down pipes leads. Alternatively, the device may be adapted to fit onto an existing hopper.
In another preferred form of the invention, the screen is incorporated in a pipe section adapted to be inserted in a down pipe of a gutter system. The device may be formed of metal or, more preferably, of a synthetic plastics material.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a screen device according to the invention,
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of Figure 1,
Figure 3 shows a plan view of Figure 1,
Figure 4 shows a modified embodiment of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 5 shows a front view of a further embodiment in the form of a down pipe cleaner and
Figure 6 shows a side view of the embodiment of Figure 5.
The drawings show a screen device for incorporation in a domestic rain water drainage system incorporating gutters which receive the discharge of rain water from, for example, the roof of the house, the gutters having a fall to lead the water to down pipes, usually via hoppers. From the down pipes the waste water passes to a drainage system or soakaway.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, the screen device 1 is incorporated in a hopper 2 having a tapering lower section 2 which leads to a down pipe connection 3. Rain water enters the hopper 2 via a gutter 4 which is connected to the upper pan of the screen device 1. Although only one gutter is shown, it will be appreciated that more than one gutter, or even a down pipe, may lead to the screen device 1. The screen device 1 includes an upper section having two side walls 5 joined by a rear wall 6 to form a three sided element open at its front end. The lower edge of this upper section is joined to the tapered
hopper 2.
The upper section of the screen device is divided by a screen 7 which extends from a point adjacent the uppermost edge of the rear wall 6 downwardly and forwardly to a position adjacent the edge of the front wall of the hopper 2. The screen 7 is curved in cross-section as shown in
Figure 2, but throughout its length is inclined at an angle to the horizontal the largest angle being adjacent the rear wall 6. The screen is provided with a plurality of orifices and is preferably a wedge wire screen having an inclined grill.
Alternatively, the screen 7 could be formed with a plurality of holes or similar orifices. The gutter 4, as shown in Figure 2, leads into the screen device
1 above the screen 7.
In operation, rain water is discharged into the gutter from the roof of the house. The water flows down the gutter in the usual way and any foreign matter such as leaves is carried along by the water. The water and foreign matter in the gutter is discharged onto the screen device 1 and the water passes through the orifices in the screen 7 to be discharged into a downpipe via the connection 3. The foreign matter is trapped on the screen 7 from where it moves downwards, eventually falling off the edge of the screen so that the screen remains clear.
Although shown as a one piece unit which incorporates the component sections 2 and 3 which are normally part of a hopper, it will be understood that the screen device may consist solely of the upper section formed by the walls 5 and 6 and the screen 7 which may be secured onto the top of an existing hopper.
Figure 4 shows a modified embodiment in which like parts bear like references and in which a gutter section 4 is connected to the rear wall 6 instead of a side wall 5. The screen is in the form of a plurality of spaced parallel rods but could,
alternatively be a mesh, wedge wire or a sheet
having a plurality of holes moulded or punched therein.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6, there is shown an alternative form of the invention comprising a down pipe cleaner unit 8 for incorporation in a down pipe. Preferably, the unit is located immediately below a hopper but may be located at any desired position in the down pipe.
The unit 8 has an inlet portion 9 designed to fit over the lower end of an upper down pipe section 10 and an outlet portion 11 designed to fit into a socket 12 of a lower down pipe section. The inlet and outlet portions 9, 11 are adapted to the profile of the down pipe which, in this embodiment is of circular cross section. The intermediate part of the unit contains the screen 7 and is substantially rectangular having a rear wall 13 side walls 14, and being open at its front wall 1 5 apart from a lower lip 1 6 for locating the lower end of the screen 7.
The operation of this embodiment is the same as the previous embodiments since rain water passing down the pipe passes through the screen 7 but foreign matter is trapped by the screen to leave the device through the open wall.
The device may be formed of a metal such as aluminium, but, more preferably, is formed of a synthetic plastics material.
