Abstract

An anti-corrosive packaging material for protecting hollow, elongated corrodable articles comprises an elongated core member of which at least the exposed exterior surface is formed from a material impregnated or coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor. The core member may be formed from a single ply of material impregnated or coated with a vapour corrosion inhibitor wound helically into a tube. Alternatively, the core member may comprise an inner core of any suitable material and an outer layer of the material impregnated or coated with the volatile corrosion inhibitor.

Description

SPECIFICATION Anti-corrosive packaging materials This invention relates to anti-corrosive packaging materials of the type which are impregnated or coated with vapour phase inhibitors or volatile corrosion inhibitors (which terms are intended to be synonymous).
Such materials have for some years been available in sheet form for use in wrapping ferrous products such as machinery, castings, wire, steel strip, knock-down components, spare parts, knives, tools and many other items.
To be fully effective, such materials must be disposed no more than about 12 inches away from the metal surface which is to be protected against corrosion. This normally presents no problem with most types of product, but difficulties can arise with hollow products. In particular, the interior surfaces of long hollow or tubular articles, such as pipes, tubes, small arms, rifles and gun barrels, may not be effectively protected merely by an external wrapping of such material since some parts of the interior surface may be significantly more than 12 inches from such material, and even parts of the surface within this range may not be fully protected because of reduced diffusion of the vapour released from the material along a passage of small cross-section.In practice it is difficult to insert the materials in sheet form inside long hollow metal sections, particularly those of narrow bone.
According to the invention, we provide an anticorrosive packaging material comprising an elongated core member having at least the exposed exterior surface thereof formed from a material impregnated or coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor.
Such a core member can be made in a range of diameters to suit insertion within articles of various diameters so as to provide fully effective protection throughout the length of a hollow product.
The core member may be formed in conventional manner as a single-ply of material impregnated or coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor and wound helically into a tube.
Alternatively, the core member may comprise an inner core of any suitable form, such as a cardboard tube or multi-ply paper tube, having thereon an outer layer of material impregnated or coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor.
The invention also resides in a method of protecting hollow elongated articles made of metals which are subject to corrosion by inserting therein a core member having at least the exposed exterior surface thereof formed from a material impregnated or coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor.
Such cores may be manufactured by conventional means utilising known types of paper or other materials impregnated or coated in known manner with known volatile corrosion inhibitors, and serve to enhance the effectiveness of conventional sheet wrapping materials when used in relation to hollow elongated articles.
